Microsoft Opens Up Hotmail, Messenger, and SkyDrive to Mobile Developers

Microsoft has an interesting blog post on Inside Windows Live that explains how mobile developers can access information in Hotmail, Windows Live Messenger, and SkyDrive from Windows Phone, Android, and iOS apps. This occurs through Microsoft's Windows Live developer platform, which was recently upgraded for the following:

1. Lightweight application setup process which requires no server-side code.

2. Mobile optimized sign-in and user consent experiences .

3. Code samples which illustrate the key steps in building a mobile application that access a user's cloud data.

We’ve gotten a lot of feedback that developers would like to see more code samples that show how to access data from Hotmail, Messenger, and SkyDrive from their favorite programming languages and platforms. Rest assured that your feedback has been heard, and we’re working on providing a larger breadth of code samples as we speak. For now, mobile developers can download the SkyDrive API example from this article to get started.

So if a viable app based or integrated client is released on Windows, OSX, IOS, Andriod, WebOS, and WP7 say Bye Bye to Dropbox unless they up the amount of free storage they provide. Now all we need is the apps and a way to purchase more storage in SkyDrive.

I have not been able to find any reference or examples of actually writing data to SkyDrive. It looks like you can only read photos and videos. So, not a replacement for Dropbox, yet.
