It amazes me what shallow "analysis" you see about companies in the tech industry. Right now, Apple is riding high with their complete hardware/software integration business model, so obviously Microsoft should copy that. It is clearly the only way to success.
It's funny, because I remember when Microsoft was the tech darling, and Apple was stuggling, everyone kept saying that Apple needed to open up their hardware and allow Mac clones to enter the market if they ever hoped to compete with Microsoft.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Explain yourself Sir.
Surely if MS had a brand like Envy, they could build high end, "Halo" PC's that actually utalize the functions in Windows. (E.G. Play to, Built in TV tuners, Multitouch, etc.) From here they could drag the standard of mainstream PC's up from the top.
Surely one of MS biggest problems is no-one is making and marketing PC's that show off all the functionality that they have. Clearly the margins are so tight (why HP is getting out) that no-one can afford to create sexy, desirable PC's. But right there is MS' biggest problem.
People by Apple, because there isn't a PC that delights and buyers can be proud of.
But I agree, sell on the core HP business.
I have to agree 100% with Paul on this one.
It makes no sense for MS to buy into the hardware game. Its not going to help them sell more copies of Windows and the profit margins are extremely low compared to software.
Besides, it would really drive a wedge between MS and all the other major OEMs and cause major FTC problems.
MS should just continue to work with a few OEMS to make "apple" like hardware.
Microsoft should buy HP's PC brand if they really love getting the Dept. of Justice on their backs over anti-trust issues again. :)
Otherwise they should just steer clear.
Every so often, I publish an updated version of my “What I Use” document, which details the technology products and services I actually use day-to-day. Since I’m currently on my third business trip in five weeks, this is perhaps an ideal time to discuss the technology products I rely on when I travel and a few related points....More
