A Fast Fix for IE8 Crashes, Slowdowns

Internet Explorer 8 feeling a little sluggish? Ed Bott provides some great advice about getting the browser back to its out-of-box performance:

Is Internet Explorer 8 acting sluggish or crashing regularly? The problem might be a corrupted add-in. And one of the most likely candidates is the widely used Adobe Flash Player. In this post, I’ll explain how you can troubleshoot IE8 performance issues by completely removing the Flash Player and temporarily disabling all other add-ons.

Updating the Flash Player is also a great way to ensure that you’re running the latest version of the Flash plug-in. That’s a crucial step in making sure you’re protected from the many security holes that have plagued this omnipresent add-in.

Here are step-by-step instructions for how to get Flash absolutely up to date.

Check out the post for the full instructions.

Yes, because IE is such a great browser: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/microsoft/7073888/Internet-Explore... If you use IE, you have no taste. Chrome, Safari and Firefox (in that order), are far superior to IE.

Um robersjoe those security flaws were patched and Firefox has problems with security as well, as for those other two there not that good, the only thing good fire fox has over IE is that is has personalization, they can both have spell checkers and ad-blockers, so yeah there is nothing much better in FF or IE now a browser to look at is Opera

I prefer IE over all of them. I don't see any appreciable difference in speed between any of them (at least with sites i frequent). I'm aware there are security issues with IE, but I'm aware of that for ALL software. I used to use Firefox all the time (because of the session manager plugin) before IE8. But since IE8 came out, I use it. I do with MS would make a good session manager for it (or someone else). I have opera around too, but it's definitey not my fav. Since the innerworkings are a wash for me, I mainly use IE because I like the way it looks better (i.e. more screen real estate). I saw a mock up somewhere of a version of Firefox that has been proposed and I really liked it. Didn't look like something a kid made on his etch a sketch. If that comes out, I'll probably move back.

If Apple had anywhere near the market share that Microsoft does it would have just as many security flaws exploited. From the 2009 PWN 2 Own summary: "Charlie Miller got the luck of the draw, and had the first time slot for the browser competition. His target- Safari on Mac OS X. Before I could even pull my camera out, it was over within 2 minutes- and Charlie (coincidentally also last year's first winner of the day) is now the proud owner of yet another MacBook, and $5,000 from the Zero Day Initiative. " Nice try rojo

"If Apple had anywhere near the market share that Microsoft does it would have just as many security flaws exploited." Not at all. Windows is fundamentally flawed by design. Therefore it breeds viruses, worms etc. *nix does not.

You think IE "looks" better? Isn't any slower than the others? You have no idea, right? Any blind monkey could see how slow IE is.

When you have to start pointing to 100ths of a second to say how much faster a browser is over another its a wash, and it doesn't breed these things it just is the biggest nail, and the hackers got a hammer. Any ways unix is vulnerable you'd be amazed how many security flaws can be found in a open system.

"@ whiplash55 said: If Apple had anywhere near the market share that Microsoft does it would have just as many security flaws exploited." Right. Read up on the falsification principle by Popper. Your argument is not valid. Next to that: Unix is a much much more solid choice for stability and safety than that crap that Microsoft is built on. IE 8 slowing down? They have an add for that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gk4FIIkKXdw

If chrome wans't so fast, i would defiantly go with IE above any other browser. It's the 2nd fastest, 2nd to screen real-estate, and 2nd(maybe 1st?) in good looks. If i had the choice between IE, Opera, Safari and Firefox, i would go with IE. If i had the choice between IE, Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Chrome, i would go with Chrome. And yes, i do have all of these browsers on my system, being a web designer.

Logjamming: FYI, Unix is not a browser. And I don't see how your argument is valid.
