Airline Travel: Your source for regurgitated blog posts ... or something

I've gotten a lot of questions about the "pingback" stuff in my blog's Comments sections. I'm not a Community Server expert, but I'd love to know how to prevent them from appearing. If you do know, please, drop me a note.

In any event, one of the weirdest and most common pingbacks is from a "blog" called "Airline Travel," which appears to be an automatically generated attempt at getting cheap ad revenues. It just mindlessly reposts everything I write here, and does the same to a bunch of other sites too, from the look of it. These posts are always accompanied by an ad. Of course.

To be clear, the Airline Travel blog is utterly without any value whatsoever. I'm just curious to see if they'll mindlessly repost this posting. Either way, the site is ridiculous.

Try this: http://communityserver.org/media/p/546536.aspx I don't know if it's *exactly* what I think it is but if it is then it's one of the best. Akismet is used on almost all instalations of wordpress and wordpress.com and stops about 99.9% of all spam.

the pingbacks are very annoying. you could perhaps somehow filter all comments which have text beginning with "Pingback from"

Do they even mean to do the pingbacks?

@Turbulence: yeah, pingback are automatically enabled in wordpress, which is what airline travel runs.

Cfischer83 I laughed too... hilarity. Paul I suspect these bots are automatically posting to sites like this one to improve link-backs to their own website therefore improving their page rank for search engines. Why don't you try enabling CAPTCHA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha) on your forms? That way you'll eliminate the automatic posts. Apparently Community Server supports it: http://docs.communityserver.org/wiki/page.aspx/146/how-flexible-is-the-p... If you need any help just let email me and I'd be happy to help...

Thanks guys. I will see what I can do about this. I'm a CS neophyte, but I'll get there. BTW... LOL that Airline Travel did, indeed, link automatically to this post ... Twice. Ahahaha. They have since manually removed the links. Good stuff.

http://community.winsupersite.com/ControlPanel/Tools/ManageSpamRules.aspx have you tryed the built in spam rules feature of Community server? I use it on our church website and it seems to work pretty well.
