Apple Posts QuickTime 7.3 and iTunes 7.5, Mac and Windows

The Mac Observer covers Apple's release today of iTunes 7.5 and QuickTime 7.3:

Apple posted two new updates on Monday, QuickTime 7.3 and iTunes 7.5. Both implement minor changes for iPhone support, QuickTime 7.3 addresses security issues and iTunes 7.5 introduces a new game, Phase, for some iPods. The updates apply to both Mac OS X and Windows.

"iTunes 7.5 features the ability to activate iPhone wherever service is offered and support for Phase, a new interactive music game designed exclusively for iPod nano (third generation), iPod classic, and iPod (fifth generation). This release also includes bug fixes to improve stability and performance," according to the installer.

"QuickTime 7.3 addresses critical security issues and delivers:

  • Support for iTunes 7.5
  • Updated support for creating iPhone-compatible web content
  • Updated JavaScript support in the QuickTime Web Plug-in
  • Numerous bug fixes

This release is recommended for all QuickTime 7 users," also according to the installer.

"Numerous bug fixes" so how many times more bugs did they create in this release?? ;)

QT is cancerous on Windows. Quite possibly the worst POS software, even worser than shiTunes.

I know that it didn't fix any of the issues I have. I get a corrupted screen, where I need to minimize iTunes and restore it before I can read the screen. I believe this happens when other windows are in the forground, and I switch back to iTunes using the taskbar. Also, I usually can't get my mouse to scroll in the library. But that could be due to the size of my library. iTunes seems to choke after about 80GB. And I can't watch video podcasts on my computer due to stuttering. The last time I had smooth video playback in iTunes was when I had it installed on Vista RC1. Go figure. iTunes has been getting steadily worse for years now. Sadly, I still use it every day.

"I get a corrupted screen, where I need to minimize iTunes and restore it before I can read the screen. I believe this happens when other windows are in the forground, and I switch back to iTunes using the taskbar." quickie diagnosis: it sounds like your video driver needs to be updated. I would hope that iTunes actually uses DirectDraw for 2D acceleration of screen surfaces, and if you're minimizing windows and it doesn't draw properly, it would indicate that your video drivers may be the culprit. Are you using WDDM or XDDM drivers? Are you running Vista Aero? What type of GPU do you have? Desktop or laptop computer (ie. desktop or mobile GPU)? Happen to know which driver version you're using currently? Does the problem manifest itself in Windows Media Player when playing videos?

Forceware 163.69 driver on a NVidia 7800GS. Driver is directly from NVidia's website. I see that's been updated. I'll try out the new driver soon. It's a desktop system AMD 64 3000+, 1.5GB RAM. Windows Media player plays videos fine. If it does stutter, it is usually CPU related. Yes, I use Aero without any issues. Apple's solutions for these types of issues usually involve disabling direct draw acceleration in Quicktime. While that has shown some benefits, it's never really fixed the video stuttering. Thanks for your suggestion.
