Bill Gates Releases Bugs Into the Wild

A surprisingly amusing post from the good folks at PC World...

Bill Gates was at it again this week: Releasing bugs into the wild. "Not only poor people should experience this," the Microsoft founder said as he opened a jar containing mosquitoes during a talk Wednesday at the Technology Entertainment Design conference in Long Beach, California. The stunt drove many of the Technorati gathered right to their Twitter pages.

The Microsoft founder was trying to drive home the serious threat malaria poses to the impoverished masses around the world. Malaria is a virus transmitted through mosquito bites and is most prevalent in Africa and South East Asia.

While some may have fled the room during Gates' stunt, I have it on good authority that most Mac users remained in the room, confident the mosquitoes would have no effect on them.

LOL. Good stuff. Thanks to Trinity for the link. :)

"While some may have fled the room during Gates' stunt, I have it on good authority that most Mac users remained in the room, confident the mosquitoes would have no effect on them." I find it rather depressing that considering the previous paragraph - "trying to drive home the SERIOUS threat malaria poses to the impoverished masses" this little segment still made an appearance.

@ DavidR91 Just stop. It's a joke. Do you usually run around with a stick up your CD drive like this? Paul isnt the one giving the serious talk. I mean the whole "controversy" over this has been nothing more than a disgraceful look into how utterly brainless the whole blog-o-oval has become. I've actually seen people comment in outrage over how Gates might have released malaria-carrying insects onto innocent people. Even some morons (Resident Mac trolls on those sites) were eluding to Gates needing to be investigated by the Interior department. For what I could not even tell you! It leaves me speechless that these are actual adults! But hey, maybe their childish overreaction may have given this cause some good attention, and people may give money to it because of the exposure. Maybe the idiots that flew off the handle over it may give out of embarrassment.

Also, keep in mind that the indented text is from the linked article...not Paul's commentary. But, still...its a funny statement and possibly quite true ;-) <---wink, wink; nudge, nudge; say no more! --tayme

Who knew Billy G was a performance artist? Brilliant. "While some may have fled the room during Gates' stunt, I have it on good authority that most Mac users remained in the room, confident the mosquitoes would have no effect on them." That just shows their superior analytical skills and intelligence. Plus we know Bill would never harm us...he's just an old softie at heart. (Get it? 'Softie...awww, never mind.)

"That just shows their superior analytical skills and intelligence" Some intelligence, sitting there stupified. The only person with intelligence was on stage. What exactly were Mac users doing at a Gates rally anyway?....That's sacrilegious according to the Jobsian iBook.

The talk he gave was a bore. Like the usual Bill Gates talk. And the mosquitoes sounded funnier than it actually was. zzzzz

"The talk he gave was a bore." So, I assume you listened to the entire talk? Care to summarize? No? Maybe after school? Seriously, it was a good PR stunt. Something that would have not garnered ANY attention has spread around the news outlets like, well, mosquitoes in a conference hall.

of course this is classic Thurrott. Gates goes completely wackadoodle and somehow Thurrott funnels it into a knock against apple. Stay classy, thurrott.

"somehow Thurrott funnels it into a knock against apple." Where? He quoted someone else saying this, and it's not really a knock. If you think that's a knock, you should take that corncob out of your ...

"Just stop. It's a joke. Do you usually run around with a stick up your CD drive like this?" Yeah, you're right. Let's all laugh about how poor people have malaria too - after all, the fact he was trying to show a serious point is irrelevant, right? I know it's supposed to be a joke, but my point is, it's not funny - the article takes a decent attempt to highlight how much a problem malaria is, and makes it into a cheap one-liner. Can you not see the problem there? Or is it OK to completely ignore the whole point of the mosquito release?
