Daily Update: 3DS, Crysis 2, WWDC 2011, New York Times

Good morning. Or, most likely, afternoon by the time I get through this.

Nintendo released its 3DS, a 3D version of its (very) popular DS portable gaming system. It's funny how this thing doesn't rate much in the way of news in the tech blogosphere, outside of the kiddie gaming sites. I've got one on the way, with a few games, but I've heard it's excellent.

Speaking of video games, Crysis 2 is allegedly a huge success already, and is also supposed to be quite good. I need to pick it up, but I've barely even looked at Dead Space 2 as it is.

The WWDC rumor mill is firing away in full force this week, WWDC being Apple's annual developer show. Apple has issued a press release noting that this show will include "the future of iOS and Mac OS", fueling the fire. I just find it interesting that they list iOS first.

God bless you, Intel: The company just lowered prices and doubled capacities of its SSD products.

The New York Times' confusing new matrix of digital subscription offerings went live today. I do pay for the NYT, and based on the specials I see today, I may change how I do this. For now, I'm going to test a Sunday-only paper subscription.

Both Apple and Amazon are reportedly working on digital locker services so users can store their music collections in the cloud. This is a good, and overdue, idea.

Ed Bott says that AT&T is most at fault for the delays in getting the first Windows Phone update out to users. Ed's a good guy, but he's wrong here. But both James Kendrick and Mary Jo Foley (sort of, in the latter case) call him on that rather effectively. (i.e. it is indeed Microsoft's fault, as I've said as well: You can't blame AT&T for acting true to form. You can and should blame Microsoft for letting this happen in a post-iPhone world.)

Paul, you mentioned that you read the NY Times on your Kindle. I'm not seeing anything in regards to the Kindle on their website. Are you seeing something different, are you moving away the Kindle for reading the NY Times?

Right, so I've subscribed to the NYT on the Kindle since the day the first Kindle arrived. But I'm going to experiment for a while with other ways to read the paper, including the iPad and the Google Chrome web app on a Tablet PC.

The Kindle and Nook subscriptions are currently not tied to this scheme, but NYT says they will be eventually.

Samsung just recently updated my AT&T Captivate to Froyo after much delay. Samsung never blamed anyone and at least kept stating they were waiting until they were comfortable that the update would work properly.

Personally I didn't mind the delay as moving from Android 2.1 to 2.2 wasn't a major update. Additionally, an iOS update for my iPhone 3G rendered it basically useless and led to my switch to Android. I was fine waiting for a well-tested update.

And, of course, my Android phone never drops a call on AT&T.

Re: Crysis 2

Nobody played Crysis 1. I hope they ditched the entire backstory like Far Cry 2 did, and look how successful that turned out to be....

Re: Future of iOS and OS X at WWDC

One is being targetted by developers, the other is being targetted by a hobo with a shotgun. Can you guess which is which?

Re: Intel cuts costs on SSD's

So now SSD's are only 8x the price per GB as a hard drive, and only 1/3 less reliable?

Re: NY Times newspaper

What's a newspaper?

Re: Apple digital music locker

I'm placing bets that FairPlay DRM 2.0 restricts how many computers can access your online library.

Re: AT&T & Microsoft

For once, I'm glad I'm a customer of a Canadian cell carrier. I already got the "February" update. Telus is starting NoDo rollouts tomorrow (the 29th). Maybe the higher rates that we pay here are actually being used for good instead of evil....

So regarding the 3DS:

Are you going to take Steve Jobs' advice and throw away your stylus like he says you should?

If "nobody wants a pen-based computer" like Apple says, why does the 3DS get a pass? Last time I looked, it was right up there in top-selling consumer electronics devices next to the iPhone and iPod touch. Another Apple lie, I say!
