Firefox 3 visual integration with Vista: What the #@$%???

Way back in October, I expressed great joy at seeing the following mockup of how Firefox 3 would look on Windows Vista:


This just seemed to good to be true. I mean, this thing looks like a smoking Vista application.

I've been waiting eagerly for this look and feel to be integrated into the Firefox 3 beta, and while Mozilla has shipped two major changes to the OS X theme, nothing had appeared on Windows. 

Until this.


Dear God. Tell me this is a joke. Please. Tell me it won't look like that, and that you're not really moving the Home button to the Bookmarks toolbar? (The name of the toolbar alone should explain why this is dumb.)

Umm yeah its the same way on the latest OS X minefield build. You can drag it up onto the main toolbar, or add the button via customize on OS X. I guess you did not download the daily build for Vista?

More than that the screwed up the address/url bar. It is now called the "awesome bar" and its far from awesome. Its a piece of junk at the moment with a horrible algorithm. I've emailed back and fourth with Asa who is a Mozilla employee about this and am waiting to hear back after he talks to some developers. I haven't downloaded a nightly build since before Beta 2, but I grabbed one yesterday (Minefield, cute) ... and... yikes. This is no good. Thanks for the link chickens.

Sir_Timbit: While there is more likely a way to stop the pingback spam I don't think Paul really cares. A few of us have been complaining about it for months and they're still here. What can you do?

Actually, I've gotten used to the Home button on the toolbar. While you cannot hide the text "Home" yet, there is a bug to provide that option. Currently, I use a piece of CSS code to hide "Home." I do agree the icons are hideous. I have always liked the Qute icons which were the ones in use just prior to the release of 1.0. I still use the Qute theme in Firefox 2 and hope it won't be too long after 3 is release before a compatible Qute version is available. I continue to scratch my head over why the Mozilla devs cannot choose a distinctive set of "Firefox" icons and stay with them. I and I think many others others chose Firefox because it was different (and better) that any IE browser available then or now. Theme writers will provide themes to make Firefox look like IE if that is what some people want. Let Firefox be Firefox!

A small correction to my comment above: I have gotten used to the Home button being on the BOOKMARKS toolbar.

Add the following code to your userchrome.css to somewhat improve the icons and toolbars. The Vista-specific icons should land for beta 4, but I don't see anything going on with making the middle-of-the-toolbar theme part less ugly. By what I've read, for Windows users, only the XP icons are currently on the nightly builds and the Vista versions are yet to come. The back and forward button is still supposed be the "Keyhole" look but more tailored toward Vista's look, Now believe this or not the idea I got from keeping tabs on the visual refresh over the past weeks was that the original icon set for the Vista visual refresh was dropped due to the many requests that came in (from Vista users?) that they'd rather keep Firefox looking like Firefox rather than having it look so Internet Explore-ish. Go figure. Unfortunately there were quite a few sites I keep tabs on for this type of info for me to list here. By the way. I didn't have a problem getting rid of the "Home" text for the Home button although why they moved it to the Bookmarks toolbar is beyond me. I just moved it from the the Bookmarks toolbar into the "Customize" dialog box first and then up to the toolbar. No more text. The latest build eliminates the "text" portion also but still leaves it on the Bookmarks toolbar.
