Good January for Sony's games business

Well. :) This nicely explains Microsoft's warning last week about Xbox 360 shortages:

January was a good month for Sony's video game business. For the first time, its PlayStation 3 outsold its own PS2 as well as Microsoft's Xbox 360.

According to industry tracker NPD, Nintendo's Wii was still king in January, though, with 274,000 units sold in the United States, followed by PS3 at 269,000 and Xbox 360 with 230,000.

Overall, according to NPD, video game sales including hardware, software and accessories in January reached $1.18 billion, a drop of 6% compared with the same month last year.

Most of the shortfall came from the hardware side, and NPD analysts theorized that an inventory shortage was to blame, given the massive number of consoles sold in December.

Interesting. So this begs the question: Were January's results an abberation or the start of a trend? My guess is on the former.

I think the PS3 took off because Warner Bros. announced they were switching from HD DVD to Blu-Ray, so some people jumped the fence and bought a Blu-Ray player, and I see that continueing this month since HD DVD is dead dead.

I remember when the PS2 came out and, Sony took a risk and made the machine with a DVD player instead of the cheaper CD player. Good Choice. Now that the HD disk format is settled, people are more likely to buy a Blu-Ray player, guess which player is the best one on the market? Winner: PS3, it is currently cheaper than many stand alone players and is fully compatible with the 2.0 spec that is either announced or soon to be announced. Microsoft decided to go with a DVD player in the 360. Thus, there is no reason for anyone to purchase a 360 except to play games. The media extender is merely a bonus. They won the race to be first to market, and thanks to Halo 3 they are sold a lot of consoles when it was released. However its narrow appeal to hard core gamers and its horrible reputation for only is going to doom it to niche status. The break out winner is the Wii which has been able to transcend the niche gamer status. My 67 year old mother in law, waited in LINE Sunday to purchase a Wii. I think the PS3 will do a bit better than the 360 but not nearly as well as the Wii since it appeals to both video-philes as well as gamers. Thus, it will be a niche plus product. Regards Joe Dokes

I'm one of the million or so HD DVD refugees out there. But I'm not one to sit in a corner and whine about it. Rather, two days ago, I did the unthinkable: I bought PS3. I've never owned a Playstation before. But I had an Xbox and currently have an Xbox 360. A year ago I bought the HD DVD drive add on and have really been enjoying high def movies. But we all saw the handwriting on the wall in January with Warner Bros.' decision to go strictly Blu-ray. Microsoft can say all they want that consoles are not about games, but Blu-ray is Sony's trojan horse in more ways than one. First in the format war putting a Blu-ray player in the PS3 was the trojan horse to beat out HD DVD sales in terms of movies purchased. Now it's going to be a trojan horse in game consoles because it's the smartest way to buy a Blu-ray player right now. And now that the format war is over, lots of people will be looking to get in on Blu-ray. Mark my words, PS3 sales are really going to spike for February, March and maybe beyond. Sony's been biding their time, but their patience will pay off. All that said, I still prefer the game selection on the Xbox. But now Sony has my money, too, not just Microsoft.

I bought one last night. :) I have a 360 but wanted a BD player and the PS3 is pretty much the sane choice if you like gaming. The 360 is a year older in it's cycle and it's numbers are still 7 million consoles more. At this rate the PS3 will overtake in about 200 months. ;) The 360 HW + SW sales is where about 40% greater than the PS3. I think the real fight is in the software realm now and there is very little argument that the 360 has the titles to really solidify it as the number one platform. Really shocking when you think about the dominance of the PS2 VS XBOX1, this really has been nothing but a stellar success story for MS. (Despite RRoD)

I think the DVD player included is not the major drive of the people's purchase decision. Of course now that the Blu ray disc has won the war, it will be a big + for the PS3 which will tilt the balance in favor of the PS3 for people like me who are undecided and who are willing to switch to HD one day. If I remember well, EA (who knows quite a lot in the gaming business) had predicted at the beginning of the year that 2008 would be the year the PS3 would outsold the Xbox360 and maybe the Wii. They have a strong (and reliable) product in their hand, and I can't wait for them to sell their PS3 based on 45nm cell to buy one ! (Not mentioning the release of Gran Turismo5...).

"I can't wait for them to sell their PS3 based on 45nm cell to buy one" um....don't expect any price cuts - Sony just sold their Cell facilities to Toshiba. ouch! http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUST28617520080220?feedTy... anyway, ya a PS3 is about the most sane choice for a Blu-ray drive. Period. Being that it's the most widely sold Blu-ray drive, Sony couldn't possibly screw over all the PS3 owners by not updating it via firmware to support new Blu-ray revisions....right??!? How come there's never any handheld sales figures? I'd be curious to know how the PSP is holding up against Nintendo's offerings. Does Nintendo still sell and support the GBA, or is it strictly the DS now? They change things too often for me to keep up. The PSP has had exactly 2 hardware revisions from launch, and only firmware updates in the interim.

60% of PS3 owners don't even know their game console plays Blu-Ray discs. http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/08/09/60-of-playstation-3-owners-are-obliv...

Befuson, That may be true, but 40% do. 40% of millions is millions. Now that the format war is over, a good chunk of the 60% may get on board and realize that the PS3 is a great Blu-Ray player. World Wide sales numbers, for those counting. 20.13 Million for the Wii (Still limited by MFG capacity) 17.7 Million for the 360 10.49 Million for the PS3 Before you think the 360 is doing great consider this: Sony sold 112 Million Units of the PS2 as of March of last year. The product is still on the market, and until recently was still outselling the PS3. Over the same two year time period the PS2 EASILY outsold the 360. Regards Joe Dokes

Joe, you're missing the point. Only 40% are even aware of the Blu-ray capability. Far less care about it, as evidenced by sales. And so far as PS2 sales go, that's more an indictment of how poorly the PS3 was conceived as compared to the Wii, for example, than it is a notable accomplishment of the PS2. I wouldn't be bragging about PS2 sales if I were Sony.

"And so far as PS2 sales go, that's more an indictment of how poorly the PS3 was conceived as compared to the Wii, for example, than it is a notable accomplishment of the PS2." I disagree. I think it has to do more with the low price point for the PS2, and the huge number of games available.
