Google Gears now supports Firefox 3

No biggie, since this was a given, but it's just one more thing we can check off on the road towards the completion of Firefox 3's completion:

Gears, Google's project to make Web browsers a better foundation for elaborate online applications, now supports Firefox 3, the company plans to announce soon.

"Gears for Firefox 3, as of today, is available for all users," said Aaron Boodman, a Google programmer working on the Gears project, in an interview Tuesday. "We hope to announce it either today or tomorrow."

Indeed, the Google Gears code site lists Firefox 3 support in version 0.3 description. Firefox 3 itself is due this month; the open-source browser currently is in its second release candidate.

Google is working on Gears--formerly called Google Gears--as a way to advance Web programming. It's a key enabler to the cloud computing model exemplified with Web applications such as Google Docs and Gmail.

Never mind, I had manually enable it in the Add-On manager.

All I need now is a final release of Firebug and then Fx 3 will become my main browser at work, although I'm still running Fx 2.0.0.14 due to Firebug not yet being compatible and also my own policy of not developing on pre-release software. (Although all my websites run in Fx 3 without a single hitch, thanks standards!) That said the difference between 2 and 3 is vast, the speed is a massive improvement. At last I can now work all day without my browser getting utterly dog slow by about 4 hours in as it does right now.

I have been waiting for this since beta 5. At about the same time that I started using Firefox 3, I also started using Zoho Writer. I like it much better than Google Docs. I have been using it mostly for blog posting, but I might use it more if I got the offline mode working. Now I can.
