I’m lovin’ it: Zune and McDonalds

I made an odd request this morning with my wife, though it was well received by this kids: Let’s go to McDonalds for breakfast. I had an ulterior motive here, of course, and it wasn’t just the thought of having chicken for breakfast: McDonalds offers free wi-fi through Wayport and they’ve worked with Microsoft to provide Zune users with trouble-free connections. (Frankly, it’s unclear what the big deal is here, but I can’t get the Zune to connect to my two wireless networks at home, so what the heck.)

I’ve been working on a lengthy Zune 3 review since last week but there are a few pieces I hadn’t been able to test yet, and wireless access to Zune Marketplace on the device is one of them. Predictably, it’s a great experience, but the real breakthrough is for those who have a Zune Pass monthly subscription: If you do have one, you can stream entire songs and albums over wi-fi to the device, which is pretty exceptional. I listened to bits of a new Lindsey Buckingham album over breakfast and then went retro with some older Adam & the Ants albums while the kids hit the play area in the restaurant.

(typical iPhone photo, sorry)

Increasingly, I feel like Microsoft is on to something here. Yeah, $15 a month is a bit steep (I think $9 is the sweet spot for this kind of thing) but the ability to grab so much music—and, via wi-fi, to stream it on demand—is incredibly compelling. What a great experience.

It’s hard not to think down the road and imagine what the video experience would be like if that were included as part of the Zune Pass. I could see people cancelling their cable subscriptions if they could get enough content via services like Zune Marketplace (or whatever).

Yeah, I still do believe that subscription services are the future of the music industry. And they’re clearly the future, in general, of these digital media platforms.

More in the review….

Oh, and I’ve decided to not wait on the coming switchover to a new content management system on the SuperSite to reorganize the site by content instead of vague sections like reviews, showcases, and so on. It will take a few weeks to get this done, but the first new content-based activity center, for the Zune, is up now at http://www.winsupersite.com/zune. Let me know what you think. I’ll be making something like that for all of the main content types covered on this site, but the real trick is figuring out how to expose that (via a toolbar or menu or whatever) in a way that makes sense. More to come….

>>It’s hard not to think down the road and imagine what the video experience would be like if that were included as part of the Zune Pass.<< Here is one difference: Plenty of television is streamed free of charge right now...both on Hulu and one the networks websites. There's no parallel for music. I think it more likely you'll see those streams come to portable devices as they are now - free of charge - ad supported -- than as portable content you have to pay for. The companies have to figure out some way to get the music subscriptions ad supported and then drop the price way low. That/s the only way the concept will ever become mainstream. Both the Mossberg Solution and David Pogue himself liked the Zunes gen 3 advances.

Do any of you, especially Paul, know if and when all this stuff will be available in other countries outside usa? As I'm deeply fond of music I like the possibility Zune.net offers to discover new bands and new music and I miss all that here in Italy a lot! So, my question comes authomatically :-)

Ah, P.S. PAUL: the link "read more" in the "zune 3 preview" section targets erroneously to the "live mojave experiment" page.

Microsoft needs to do something radical with the Zune for it to take off. In the two years since they launched it, they've been playing safe, but they're not in a position to do so. Apple can afford to play safe with the iPod. Microsoft cannot. The way these people behave, you'd think they have a 30% marketshare. At least as a limited time promotion, they can try to offer the subscription service at $5 or $9 a month. Also, while the partnership with McDonald's is a reasonable start, they shouldn't stop there. They should try and extend this partnership with other stores and restaurants. Underdogs don't win by playing it safe.

"The companies have to figure out some way to get the music subscriptions ad supported and then drop the price way low. That/s the only way the concept will ever become mainstream." For once, I agree with Ocean. Microsoft has received a lot of flak and snide remarks from the "usual suspects" for expressing an intention to have ad supported content on the Zune, but I think that's a great idea. Advertising is a necessary evil. Of course, that also brings up the question: who will want to advertise on the Zune if it's only going to be seen by 6 people.

Nickelgreen, I suspect that Microsoft would be well advised to let Apple be the point organization in dealing with the EU's desire for cross border digital music equality. MS should probably keep its figurative head down and let Apple take the EU fire on this (perhaps will working with the labels in anticipation). Which does you no good at all, short term. --John (who has an order at Amazon for Paul's ...Secrets... 2nd ed)

@Paul "Yeah, $15 a month is a bit steep (I think $9 is the sweet spot for this kind of thing)" I agree "Yeah, I still do believe that subscription services are the future of the music industry." This is where I am not so sure. I just don't understand the business model. A lot of current subscribers probably thought that $15 was a bargain because they were spending more than that anyway. If the price was able to come down to $9 per month, then millions more would be interested. So yes, some people might spend a bit more money to have a vast collection of music on tap, but many would be spending less. Couple that with the fact that you can use more than one device and some couples/families might be doubling or tripling there savings. Am I missing something?

"Giving people more excuses to go to McDonalds is a horrible idea." Microsoft is providing services that work where people actually spend their lives. Others provide services that work where they think people should spend their lives. I mean, really, how horribly uncool to provide services for those people who eat at McDonalds. Could Microsoft be more gauche.

I'm really impressed with the new software, I had no problem connecting to my home WPA encripted network. I think I can say that the new 3rd gen Zune blows the blasepod away. I confess I'm biased, I was waiting for my wife and daughter to finish at the mall yesterday, so being bored I went to a brand new Apple Store. I cruelly went over to a sales human and asked where the right click was on a MacBook Air. He explained that I hit ctrl and then click, that , that is how you right click on a Mac, he then showed me if you hold 2 fingers on the pad that also produced a "right click". I asked why, he told me he wasn't sure but he thought it was for "sleekness" I replied that "it looked kinda spastic" and asked if they carried Thinkpads, he said no but tried to tell me how superior the Air was to "any Windows laptop". I told him the new Thinkpad was just as thin and actually had a Dvd burner and multiple usb ports as well. At this point he started getting a little upset a told me that the Air was a revolutionary device. I said, whatever and walked out. I think I need better supervision.

whiplash The Apple Store is clearly just not meant for people like us. Couldn't you just go back to that nice McDonalds in the other end of the mall? I'm sure everyone would be happier if you just knew your place and were content there. :-)

Don't get me wrong I can see the synergy between the two products ;-). As a business they are probably doing the right thing for there shareholders. My point was simply is it ethical to encourage anyone in Western society to spend more time on their ass eating junk food. I knew things were bad on the other side of the pond but do people really spend their lives in McDonalds. Anyway, convenience is not always a good thing.

Whiplash, you sound kinda arrogant:) The Zune doesn't work on your WiFi home network. Obviously the Zune is flawed:) Now McD's. Excellent idea. I have small kids, but holly crap are there all ages in there, especially teens, and teens with phones. I don't know squat about the Zune, but if it does WiFi internet and/or text messaging, McD's is the place to be if you're under 20. Even if you can't web surf or text, one person with an account could potentially share many songs via WiFi. So now I want to here from you guys which model you would get. And I would like to know the color too. For me, that 8GB metallic blue is gorgeous and the nicest looking music player I have ever seen, IMO

I have had issues connecting 2 of our Gen 1 Zunes to the wireless in our house. I changed it from WPA to WEP and still could not connect until turned of security. Of course, I am not going to leave my wireless wid open, so turned on MAC filtering to just allow our devices...It seems low to me...but I think I have some other issues that I need to look into, as well. I have been thinking of going to YuckDonalds to check out the service there to see if it is any better. I agree...anywhere but PukeDonalds would have been a better choice...how about Subway? --tayme

McDonalds doesn't make you obese. Living a life on your rear, and not exercising will do that. Doesn't matter if you go to Subway or Starbucks or BK or Checkers. My wife and I go to McDonalds lots of times. We are both under 140 pounds. That is because we bike, walk, and exercise regularly. Gesh, what an elitist excuse to bash this promotion!

I haven't been able to test my daughter's second gen yet...she is away at college. I am half heartedly attributing it to them bein gen 1. I don't mind $15/month for the Zune Pass. We get to use it on all 3 Zunes AND 3 different computers. Of course, I won't complain if they want to lower it to $9!!! @Doc - No need for lipitor...I take Simvastatin! Regarding your question...that blue 8 gigger is hot, but if I had to replace my 30GB gen 1, I would go with an 80GB, probably. Still Running --tayme

Disclaimer...I have a Mac, but am primarily a Windows user, and I make my living writing software for Windows....I love to use my Mac, but I don't find Windows XP to be that bad...except when you update your computer, and it keeps popping up that annoying dialog "you must restart, now or later'..OK WINDOWS, I GET IT, I WILL REBOOT WHEN I AM DONE DOING WHAT I AM DOING RIGHT NOW!....and now, on to the rant.... Honestly, this is ridiculous...Mike Galos, you are unreal. You claim that Microsoft provides services where people live their lives, while others (clearly meaning Apple), provide services where they "think people should live their lives". You are absurd. You just can't stand that FINALLY the small guy is causing Microsoft to worry...or at least to react! You can't STAND that Apple is getting accolades, whether deserved or not...you sit here and call the "iCabal" smug, arrogant, or whatever, and then you refer to Steve Jobs as "Dear Leader"...meanwhile, I never once heard anyone suggest that ANYONE should live their lives (or spend their time) at Starbucks. Maybe if you didn't spend so much time at McDonald's eating CRAP to use the services THE BORG provides, you wouldn't look like you do......just ridiculous. You don't like when someone likes Apple, admittedly maybe too much, but you sit here all day with a pro-Microsoft agenda criticizing everything you don't like, and praising EVERYTHING Microsoft does, says, or releases....as if they are perfect or something. Just the other day you sat here and repeated one of Paul's quotes "A billion people have spoken"...but you keep on with your mantra on how the Zune is so superior to the iPod...i would be interested to hear your "excuse" as to why the iPod is such a far superior seller than the Zune?..it's like you can't accept that MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, Apple has got something BETTER than Microsoft...I mean....how many "iPods have spoken"?..how many Zunes? "A billion people have spoken"...LOL!!! Never mind that Microsoft still has an OS monopoly on the run of the commodity turd PCs you can buy in Walmart....yeah...people are CHOOSING MS.....or is that they don't know of any other options? maybe they don't want to spend the extra money on a Mac and are then FORCED to have MS foisted upon them?...nah, that can't be it, people are CHOOSING MS. PEOPLE, THESE ARE COMPUTERS! IT'S NOT A RELIGION! NO ONE IS ASKING YOU TO SWITCH YOUR PREFERENCE, GIVE UP YOUR GOD, OR VOTE AGAINST YOUR POLITICAL AFFILIATIONS.... Mike Galos, you are the WORST offender! You called the Ribbon a gift to the world from Microsoft.....are you KIDDING ME?! The thing looks like the menus and toolbars vomitted all over the window! IT'S A FREAKING UI TOOL, AND NOT EVEN THAT GREAT!!!! (Yes, I've used it, and developed against it) Geez, you take this stuff way too seriously and pollute this already biased blog (which I admittedly can't get enough of and love)...but Mike Galos, you are a cancer on this board.....and change that awful picture!

When I went to medical school and residency in Philadelphia, the Eagles were still the competition. i now live in Southern New Jersey and the Steelers are still my team, but I tolerate the Eagles more. Mike G worked for MS and guess what? The competition was Apple. That's his team and he can cheer for them as loud as he wants in this free world. In fact, I agree with him that MS doesn't get the credit it deserves for so many deeds, the medical support and apps that save lives and will improve live in the future. I love connecting the Zune to my wireless network, no problems with WPA encryption. Buying songs is easy, and having a deal with McDonald's is a great idea, millions of people who are in the core demographic eat there. I don't, at least very often so but there's nothing wrong with eating there once in while as long as you don't live off the stuff.
