Live from PDC 2008: Day 3

10/29/2008 10:29 PM – Final update – Well, it’s finally over. After hitting a final session with Raf, a big group of us went out to dinner after taking a ride on the famed LA Metro (someone has to use it). Here are some pictures…

I’m flying home early tomorrow so I should be offline most of Thursday. See you when I get back.

10/29/2008 2:15 PM – We just discovered they’re closing the press room at 3 today for some reason. I’m going to go see Raymond Chen after that, but here are a few random shots from the LACC today…

10/29/2008 12:16 PM – Just got back from a Windows Home Server meeting. Time for lunch…

10/29/2008 9:19 AM – And some pictures from the press room this morning…

10/29/2008 9:10 AM – OK, this keynote is (predictably) a yawn. So here are some pictures from last night’s press party at the Elevate lounge…

Ed Bott, Halloween style!

10/29/2008 8:37 AM – LiveBlog is happening and the keynote is under way…

10/29/2008 8:21 AM – We’re at the press room … keynote will be on the Liveblog shortly…

10/29/2008 7:09 AM – A bit of a later start today, but no surprise there.

"Guess having the entire computing world changed out from under them has them particularly irrational." Looking at XP, Vista and now Vista 2, OS X and Apple have nothing to worry about. Absolutely nothing. Well, unless Apple wanted to create boring, lame and tasteless operating systems. Then, and only then, would they be worried. Computing world changing? You're kidding right? This is Vista 2. Vista with some service packs. Nothing to see. Notice how the tech world is not excited (only MSFT people and their fanboys are) about any of this?

Preemtive multi-tasking, is that something Windows is proud of for having been out with it before Apple? Amiga did it in 1985. Even before the joke (Windows) was truly born." So after reading an article that proves you to be clueless on the origin of the dock, you change the subject? "Apple does not demo like Microsoft does. " Really? You just proved my point. And if you saw video of the iPhone during it's stages of development, you would see that it was far from the perfection that wasn't even there after it was released. MS shows their products during various stages of development, their stuff is used by too many people to play the little secret games that Apple can get away with. Windows7 isnt even at the Beta testing stage yet, so why should everything work 100% right now? Please dont answer that, as you might veer off into something that has nothing to do with the question. "And it didnt work perfectly even after it was released. Here is an article from iPhonebuzz.com, entitled" You're dreaming, right?" Again, after reading an article showing you to be ignorant, you give a nonsense answer. "You mean become like Microsoft and their fanboys and just copy? Want me to not have taste too? Like Microsoft?" Another nonsense reply. "And what phones does Microsoft make? Oh yeah, none." The subject was about you claiming that MS "follows" supposedly superior companies by implementing features after them, as if to say that MS is some lesser company as a result. I gave you a quick and easy example of something Apple tossed into their product that already existed in other competing devices, showing that your favorite company "follows" others, and your response is "And what phones does Microsoft make"? Seriously, you are an pathetic troll at best. No wonder you use Apple's stuff.

"People, people, people! Let's all calm down." For once, you're right. I don't think we need to respond to every wild allegation made by nuts on either side. Master, you have to understand that this is how these fanatics sell Macs - by making wild and unsubstantiated claims about PCs. To back it up, they use personal blogs or personal opinions. roberts is that annoying salesman who won't go away without completing the sale. lindy is occassionally as annoying, but for the most part is a less annoying version of roberts. If you look carefully, most of their claims and assertions are baseless, but why bother taking the time to correct them? They're not going to change. They won't see reason. You're simply wasting your time. Anyway, nice preview articles, Paul. Keep it going!! :-) Long Zheng has a lot of articles on the design improvements too: http://www.istartedsomething.com/

@Mum You're saying Apple didn't invent *any* of the tech they use in their machines and their OS's?" Im sure some stuff they did, but the point was to counter robertsjoe moronic post where took features of Windows7, and then found equivalents in OSX. The tagline of the whole post in his own words: "Hmmm where have I seen this before? Oh yes! OS X." The tired Apple fanatic cliche that Apple invented everything and everyone just uses it in their own products. So I gave him a list of stuff that other people invented, and wondered why Apple was using it if they didnt create it. He didnt have an answer.

"Ooh. The Mac'ies are cranky tonight. Guess having the entire computing world changed out from under them has them particularly irrational. Poor babies." Ahh Mikey (Father of Paul as I have read???) jack of all winsupersite blog posts, master of NONE! For that comment you should give one of your hamburgers to Master, he needs it you dont. Share the love!! My question with the world changing will my MSN premium and passport account still work? Will my hotmail.com address change to live.com? Will my 360 finally not RROD anymore? At least I can finally watch H.264 videos on Windows with out installing CCCP to do so. My world has changed!!!! Or it will in June of 2009 or was that Jan of 2010...I need to write this stuff down!

"Anyway, at least Infoworld presents two views about Windows 7:" You're right. And oddly enough, the "PC Guy" (Kennedy) doesn't like it, and the "Mac Guy" (Yager) does. What kind of muddled-up world is that? "A Mac guy reviewing a PC will rarely be unbiased." Really? And yet you linked to Yager's article.

"Guess having the entire computing world changed out from under them has them particularly irrational." *snort* You're about as funny as Seinfeld painting his toenails. Vista 2 is hardly revolutionary. Evolutionary, to be sure. But come on...you don't need to be so hyperbolic.

"Firewire, initiated by, and major contributions by Apple." True. So, now they go ahead and yank it from their newest tech. Once again, if this was done by MS, the outcry would be huge that they are abandoning a standard they helped create.

Hey Lindy: Give it a rest. Isn't appleinsider, or macrumors or some other mac web page calling you home? PS: Did I mention Vista runs great on my 3 year old Dell and I drive a Jag XJ6?

"I just want to see XP SP3, Vista SP1/SP2?, Windows 7, OS X 10.5, OS X 10.6 do a file copy test to a Windows 2003 server test. Say a CD's worth of 5000 files. Right now Vista is in last place." It would seem that it's Server 2003 that's causing the issue: http://msmvps.com/blogs/bradley/archive/2008/04/29/unscientific-but-wow.... http://msmvps.com/blogs/bradley/archive/2008/10/21/the-top-ten-wow-s-of-... "Sure you just need to do the following, turn of indexing, turn off search, turn off automatic defrag, turn off Aero, go all the way down to classic mode, turn off the sidebar, turn off system restore and turn off UAC." Sorry, but that's just not true. Did I mention I build Atom based nettops with 1GB of RAM? They run Vista fully. They even support Aero. Lowest performance score is 2.5 (for video, which is based on the GMA 950). The rest of the scores are in the high 4's. Did I also mention that the motherboard runs (and includes) a fanless CPU and costs less than $80US, has dual-core and hyperthreading too? "At that point you have XP and it will run like a champ on that netbook." LOL! Who the f* would want XP now, considering the security on it, and systems run Vista perfectly? Ya, I'm sure you were saying the same about Windows 2000 about 2 years into XP's release too. "I have a buddy that just bought two Dells today for his office, a Vostro 220 and a new Latitude E something and on both he paid the XP tax, $99 to have XP preloaded." Much like lottery tickets, it's a voluntary tax for the stupid. "Well, unless Apple wanted to create boring, lame and tasteless operating systems. Then, and only then, would they be worried." They do. And they are. "At least I can finally watch H.264 videos on Windows" "*snort*" I'll take that as an obvious admission that iTunes is a PoS. :)P "OS X is hardly revolutionary. Evolutionary, to be sure. But come on...you don't need to be so hyperbolic." That's better.

"PS: Did I mention Vista runs great on my 3 year old Dell and I drive a Jag XJ6?" Yes, you did. Doc, mention your $400 laptop. STAT! "True, that. Even fanboi Pogue's Windows books outsell those "Secret" books written by Windows "experts". ;-)" I haven't read the book, but as long as every chapter is not filled with a "or you can switch to a Mac", it might be useful to people. Of course, Goatberg would probably have 80% of the chapters and content dedicated to Macs and the rest to Windows in his Windows book. (Don't know if he's already written one; don't care.) And the Windows section will be filled with useless and factually incorrect information.

"The tired Apple fanatic cliche that Apple invented everything and everyone just uses it in their own products. So I gave him a list of stuff that other people invented, and wondered why Apple was using it if they didnt create it." Of course it happens both ways. I'd also say these newly published Windows7 features sound strangely familiar to someone who's been a Mac OS X user for some time but then OS X has started to resemble Windows in so many ways lately (possibly to make switchers feel more at home but unfortunately also alienating some present users in the process) that the whole discussion is not worth anything. [One OT question to you native english speakers... Should I say "Web" or "The Web"? As in "Solutions for Web" or "Solutions for the Web" for a brochure I'm making. This one brit told me the latter is correct but then I see a "Save for web" menu option in Photoshop. Thanks!]

@Weathorn "Sorry, but that's just not true." Is that why most netbooks come with XP or Linux and the very reason XP was extended by MS? I live in the US. Delmont has spewed his right wing, neocon dribble many times. He is super easy to set off. Its fun:) My only real comments in this thread are the fact that no one runs Vista/Windows 7 on the current crop of Netbooks unless of course they like that kind of pain. I just gave 4 links to common places that sell them and none of them sell one with Vista. All of them are XP home or a distro of Linux.

From your link.... "Other features include 92% full-size QWERTY keyboard, Vista Business licence wiht XP Pro installed, touchpad, built-in stereo speakers and VGA webcam." Wow they gave you the Pro version, you could join it to a domain!! RDP to it, put a SMS client on it and push software! I give you 4 links, with what 30?? Possible Netbooks that you can buy and you find the one that comes with a Vista license but has XP installed. Pure genius. May I suggest www.rif.org it will greatly help you out in life. Must be those schools in Canada. "LIAR" are you Paul's brother?

"Wow they gave you the Pro version, you could join it to a domain!! RDP to it, put a SMS client on it and push software!" That's all stuff that's included in Vista Business - without the added security. "I give you 4 links, with what 30?? Possible Netbooks that you can buy and you find the one that comes with a Vista license but has XP installed." That's how HP sells almost all of their business class notebook systems. All of the software discs are included with business class machines - XP x86, Vista x86, even Vista x64. "May I suggest www.rif.org it will greatly help you out in life. Must be those schools in Canada." LOL! *snort* An american company. I guess that's where you got your grade 3 grammar curriculum from.
