This handy little utility lets you manage your Google Apps-based documents from your desktop PC.

With Memeo Connect, you can:

Access any files locally from any desktop - Memeo Connect continuously syncs your Google Docs account with your desktop ensuring that you will always have access to your files, especially when you are offline.

Edit your Google Docs files offline - Memeo Connect provides you the ability to edit and sync any Google Docs files using Microsoft Office…it’s the perfect answer when you have to work offline.

Easily and quickly import all your files into Google Docs - Memeo Connect makes it even easier and faster to migrate all your files and folders into Google Docs, even preserving your original folder structure in the process.

Accurate offline viewing - Memeo Connect allows you to simply save all your Google Docs files as PDF files for accurate viewing offline when editing is not a requirement.

Store previous versions of your files, locally - Memeo Connect adds an additional layer of functionality by storing previous versions of your local files, allowing them to be recalled later.

Why Google doesn't offer something like this is unclear. Thanks to David Coursey for the find.

Update: This may require a paid Google Apps account to access, which of course reduces its usefulness to the world at large. Ah well.

Neither Microsoft nor Google have integrated the online file storage into Windows so that online files can be accessed directly from programs - either by working on a local copy that is synced online, or by enabling direct access to open and save from the online storage. Google's announcement referred to Meemeo but that's only for enterprise customers with Google Apps Premier Accounts. Microsoft has bits and pieces all over the place. Mesh does syncs online files with local folders but the online storage is separate from Skydrive and clumsy to work with. Skydrive has some partial integration from Skydrive Explorer and Gladinet and other third parties. And Microsoft is going to build some of this into Office 2010 - but so far it looks as if the integration will be limited to Office 2010, leaving all other file types and users of earlier versions of Office or other programs out in the cold, using the web-based interface to clumsily upload and download files. I hope I'm wrong about that but so far that's what I can glean about Microsoft's plans. To me this is the central shortcoming of what Microsoft and Google are doing now with online files. I can't set my clients up with something that is intuitive - I have to reach for third party tools and teach them about quirks and shortcomings. http://www.brucebnews.com/2010/01/access-online-files-with-google-docs/

@valisystem: Why not just use a local storage system that syncs online for backup purposes? Why does it have to be stored primarily in the cloud? For local storage with internet access, you can't go wrong with Windows Home Server as a small business solution. It only supports 10 computers though, so it's ok for very small businesses, but larger setups require multiple servers. I kinda wonder how multiple home servers work together in the same network. Is it apparent to the user which server is doing their PC backup? Can one PC access file shares from multiple home servers in the same network without one losing their mind over where their files are stored? When you look at the cost of multiple home servers in the same network, Small Business Server looks like a better option all around, and scales to 75 users or computers. When you're dealing with that many machines (I'd say 20+), you want to have a managed environment where IT can control the computers and keep them in a stable state. Foundation Server is also a nice option for up to 15 PC's. It doesn't include Exchange or SharePoint, or have the easy-to-use management console like SBS though.
