Microsoft and Yahoo! sites compared: a quick look at the numbers

Kip over at LiveSide takes a fascinating look at the relative strengths of various Microsoft and Yahoo online services:

With all the talk about Microsoft's attempted acquisition of Yahoo!, and with a little help from Nielsen Online, we thought we'd make a quick comparison of some of the main features of both services.  I asked Nielsen if they could supply audience numbers to a sampling of sites from both, and then played a bit with Excel to produce this quick look.

Accurate audience measurement numbers are hard to come by, and we've noted some differences in the market rating services before (and more on that coming up), but at least this gives an apples to apples comparison of audience numbers (and note that this isn't market share, but unique audience).

The purpose of this little exercise was not to show trends, or make comparisons to other sites/properties, but just to get a bit of a handle on where the two companies sit in relation to each other, and what a potential joining of forces might mean.

Check out the original article for a great chart and the raw Nielsen numbers. Interesting stuff.

Paul, This is valid for the US only... And as you know, there is a big world out there! In Europe, Live (MSN) Messenger usage is about 80% and Hotmail (and Gmail) is the most used webmail service. Regardiing portals, in each european country, local portals are the most used - when they are, at all... :-) Just my 2 cents to keep things in context...

@aemarques I would agree with you about MSN but I hardly ever seen anyone on the low side of 50 with a hotmail address these days. GMail and Yahoo seem to dominate that market.

Thanks for the link, Paul. Agreed the numbers are US only, would love to get our hands on some real raw numbers, but just wanted to give a flavor of the relative positions of the 2 companies. Enjoyed meeting you at Mix, btw. See you at PDC?

Although I use gmail primarily now I still maintain my Hotmail(live) account for messenger and contact with old friends. Hotmail maintains it dominance I'd assuming largely due to that reason.

@Avro I live in Portugal. Almost everyone I know have a Hotmail address. Among the people I know (and believe me, I' a journalist and I know a LOT of people...) only one (!) uses a Yahoo account. What is more, I have teenage kids, and ALL of them - and their friends - use Hotmail. Guess what service they will be using when they grow up...? Regarding MSN/Live Messenger, there is really no competition: EVERYONE uses it. No one I know uses anything else... Again, this is my experience, and this is in Portugal. But I communicate with lots of people all over Europe and I would say it is almost the same all over the continent. Besides, Hotmail used to be really crappy compared with Gmail and Yahoo but now I would say that it is pretty good again - it still lacks POP3 access, but Outlook Connector solves it (kinda...). Anyway, only Gmail gives you POP3 access for free - in Yahoo, it is a paid service.
