Microsoft blogs about the next version of Small Business Server

Microsoft Small Business Community Blog:

There have been a few questions floating around about "Cougar," the next version of Windows Small Business Server, and what it will include and be based on.  I thought I would post some of the information that is publicly available to help address some of these questions:

  • Based on the Windows Server 2008 platform and technology wave
  • Cougar will include these technologies:
    • Windows Server 2008
    • Exchange Server 2007
    • Windows SharePoint Services 3.0
    • SQL Server 2005
    • System Center Essentials
  • Dramatically improved management, protection, and business productivity
  • Emphasis on simplicity and integration
  • Providing value for new and existing partners
  • Embracing Live Services
  • 64-bit only

I saw the "Is Cougar 64-bit only?" question come up earlier today, so I wanted to be sure to call that one out.  Ever since we announced Exchange Server 2007 would be 64-bit only and that Cougar would include Exchange Server 2007, that was a pretty clear indicator of what the answer to the 64-bit question would be.  :-)

This one's been on a serious slow burn. I believe I was first briefed about Cougar over a year ago, but I'll need to look. Along with Centro, Microsoft's got a lot coming for those businesses don't quality for the "enterprise" label. That's most of 'em. I can't wait for more info. Cougar is going to be amazing.

The component list was already stated. All of the information has been listed for a long time on the SBS FAQ page here: http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsServer2003/sbs/evaluation/faq/roadmap.mspx I've also heard that ISA support is still up in the air. ISA is slowly moving over to the Forefront product family for enterprises because it's not considered a worthwhile product for small businesses. I, for one, am actually for this change. I've seen too many SBSC members delving too far into firewall permissions and application restrictions that I kind of wonder why they don't work in the enterprise market. Most small businesses don't need user-authenticated firewall rules that can't be addressed through global restrictions. For small businesses, simplicity is the key. I kind of think that those types of IT people are doing that so that they have long-term IT management roles with those small businesses to bilk them, because nobody in the organization knows enough of what they're talking about to understand what is warranted, and what is not. I see more and more small businesses that want turn-key sales where their inexperienced dual-role "computer guy" can "manage" the network by receiving the server logs in their email and calling the real technician when someone goes amok. SBS is clearly designed for those types of customers. "IT Strategic" small businesses are really few and far between, and SBS is not the product that's designed for them. The team has also been quoted as saying that Cougar will *likely* NOT (although they "haven't decided yet") support using the server as a firewall, nor will it support the 2 NIC configuration. What is being considered is that Cougar will only support an internet connection through a UPnP-capable cable/DSL router with an integrated firewall (which is, in all honesty, the way many small businesses connect to the internet). The question is, how will this affect DHCP and DNS services from the SBS server??? (Most commercial routers don't support firewall modes when you turn off the DHCP server capabilities in the router) Also, I've been unable to find the answers to these questions: a) Which version of SQL Server 2005 comes with Cougar? Why isn't it SQL Server 2008 (or at least a slimmed down "Express" version that's up to date)? b) Forefront Client Security can run without the management tools, but will there be a management console that's compatible with Cougar (and with it's version of SQL Server)? Can it run on the SBS box, or does Microsoft still highly recommend running it on a separate non-DC server? What about the high system requirements for those? What about the other Forefront security products for Exchange and Sharepoint security? c) Will Office Sharepoint Server 2007 be supported on the Cougar box? d) Will Cougar include Windows Virtualization???

"real technician when someone goes amok" whoops that should read: "real technician when some*thing* goes amok" one last question: Will there be two differing versions of SBS ala Standard & Premium again? I really hope so - I find more customers purchasing Standard because their business apps don't really necessitate the use of the full blown SQL Server, or else they can use the free SQL Server Express for "lite" operations. I really think that Microsoft should upgrade the "Windows Internal Database" to something closer to SQL Server Express (and NAME IT thusly) and offer a "SQL Server Small Business Edition" upgrade (preferably just a CAL-restricted version of SQL Server STANDARD instead of the lame Workgroup edition that's included in the Premium version of SBS 2003 R2).
