Microsoft F's Up Modern Warfare 2 Map Pack Release

If you follow me on Twitter, you may have seen me voice some frustration yesterday with both Infinity Ward (IW, which makes "Modern Warfare 2" aka The Greatest Video Game Of All Time[tm]) and Microsoft (which makes Xbox Live, the service we must put up with because we want to use the Xbox 360). The issue, of course, was the release of the first map pack ("Stimulus Package") for MW2, which includes 5 maps, three of which are new (and at best, decent) and two of which are copies of maps from the original Modern Warfare (both of which are quite good).

As has become typical with this type of highly anticipated Xbox 360 release, it was completely botched. And I think we can fairly blame both IW and Microsoft for this.

First, IW. Despite having a better reputation than their Treyarch stable mates for some reason, IW has actually done a much poorer job supporting their own horribly buggy and easily cheated-in games than has its in-house rival. To that point, I'd highlight the unbelievable number of cheats that have cropped up in MW2 and the incredibly long times IW has taken to fix these horrific bugs. Meanwhile, Treyarch certainly had some bugs in MW2's predecessor, the excellent and underappreciated Call of Duty: World at War (WaW). But nothing like those that have plagued MW2. And Treyarch very nicely supported WaW with three--count 'em, three--map packs over the year after that game's release. And some of those additional maps are among the best of the lot. Today, over four months into MW2's run, we get just the first map pack with just three new maps. None are excellent. In fact, the new maps are largely decent at best, as noted above.

IW also didn't release the map pack until 10:30 am ET for some reason, and not at midnight the night before as is customary. I can only imagine that many people stayed up to download it and went to bed disappointed. That I actually considered doing this--but didn't, thankfully--bugs me, but at least I dodged that bullet.

And then there's Microsoft. Oh, Microsoft, what a wonderful web of BS you weave. Microsoft published the map pack to Xbox Live, allowing thousands of users to plunk down their hard earned cash (well, Microsoft Points) for the eagerly awaited update. But they didn't provide the MW2 patch that the map pack requires until later. And until that happened, users trying to play the new maps met with failure. Then they were punted offline. And then they had to wait an at least an hour--trying to install, rebooting, rinse, wash, repeat--until Microsoft fixed the problem. Because that required update wasn't working right. And now that MW2 had an update, no one could play the game at all--even single player or the old maps--until it was fixed. Cue the sound of crickets chirping. And of controllers being hurled against walls.

Hours into this, people were still having problems connecting. But perhaps as problematic--and I point my finger again at IW here--even those who got in found disappointment. That's because IW, in its infinite wisdom, isn't allowing gamers to play any game type they want with the new maps. Instead, if you want to use the new maps, you can only choose between two new game lobbies, Stimulus (a random sampling of game types) and Hardcore Stimulus (also random, but using the Hardcore Ricochet modes). So if you're like me and want to just play Team Deathmatch on the new maps--as you could, say, when new maps came out for WaW last year--well, tough. You're out of luck. So play Domination, or Demolition, or Capture the Flag, or whatever game type comes up, you sucker, and enjoy the fact that they all have different spawning rules. Arrrrgggghhh.

So. I'm happy to have new maps. I look forward to more (and hopefully better) new maps in the future. But I cannot believe that two companies that should be able to handle exactly this kind of thing could screw it up so badly. Shame on both of you. And shame on your silly excuses. Reading Major Nelsons' Twitter feed during all this was like a Three Stooges sketch. It was just horrible.

You can read more about Microsoft excuses for this debacle in its Xbox Live Operations Blog. Which, as you may have guessed, is an oxymoronic title. As for IW's excuse, I expect none. In fact, I'm pretty sure the IW that made all those games we love doesn't even exist anymore.

Ah well.

wow, put down the blowtorch, thurrott. You're a little old for video games and really too old to get this worked up over really nothing.

I'm still waiting for the Flower soundtrack on PSN. When it was released (a year go, past February), I asked Kellee Santiago, the president of ThatGameCompany (the makers of Flower) if a soundtrack was pending, and she said back then that Sony already had the soundtrack in hand for publishing on PSN/PS Store, and they've sat on it since. They even announced that it would be available "soon" for the 1 year anniversary, and it's coming up on 2 months after that. That's just frustrating, knowing that the game has lost a bit of lustre, being over a year old. It's a good game though. TGC doesn't plan on doing an expansion or sequel, but they have other games in design process right now. Their games are good. Addictive. Maybe a bit short, but pleasantly different, simple, beautiful, and certainly enjoyable: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/02/12/flower-dynamic-theme-now-avail... If you haven't played flOw on PS3 or PSP, there's a Flash version on their page. They have another, earlier PC game called Cloud. Flower is a PS3 exclusive. http://www.thatgamecompany.com

Seriously, Paul. You're better than this. Or at least I thought you were. I mean, really? A blog rant about your inability to download "a map pack" over a 24 hour period? Weak sauce. Especially disappointing was this line: "Xbox Live, the service we must put up with because we want to use the Xbox 360." ...as if you knew a better service. Penton once forgot to deliver an issue of "Windows IT Pro" to me for 2 weeks but you didn't see me OMGWTFBBQFLAMING-THE-INTERNET over it.

Hmm....gfryesc1 has a bit of a point. Paul, you said previously that first person shooters are all pretty much the same, so I find it ironic that you're likewise addicted to the fad shooter of the week. It'd be fitting if there was a response to this: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/27825/Cage_Heavy_Rain_Sales_Sent_Very... ....you know, because there are other games that don't fit into all of these predetermined genre classifications. They even announced forthcoming PlayStation Move support. Now begins the future of realistic interactive entertainment: http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3178524

My God. The things some people get themselves worked into a frenzy over...it's amazing. I can see Paul, hunched over his Lenovo, muttering to himself, "Someone should write a very strongly worded letter to The Internet about this..."

BBC2 > CODMW2. BBC2 maps came out the same day....and were free. MW2 is nothing more than mod for UT3. If you like bunny hopping, cheating and booting its loads of fun, 9 patches into the game and they still cant stop people from boosting.

I find it hard to blame Microsoft for this. They've done this before plenty of times; most times the servers are slow for a day while everyone downloads the map pack, then everything stabilizes. I recognize that they did mess up this time and they need to figure out what went wrong and make sure it never happens again. But the very fact that a selection of new maps requires a Title Update to make them work is another pointer to the incompetence of Infinity Ward. As if the rampant glitches, hacked lobbies and leaderboard destruction weren't pointers enough. The sad thing is Modern Warfare 2 really is a fun game. It was my first CoD game, and for a couple of months there, I was having a lot of fun with it. Then the exploits hit--the Javelin glitch, the first Care Package exploit... then the modded lobbies hit, dragging legit players into private, hacked games against their will. Then the leaderboard hacks hit. IW's patches were practically useless. Today, $20 and a bit of Googling will get you invited to a private MW2 game where your profile will be updated to give you millions of XP, mllions of kills, all the emblems and titles (including the spinning coin reserved for 10th Prestige players,) several classes with 3 primary weapons including an overpowered gold Desert Eagle and 4 active perks. The title update IW released to support the new maps did nothing to mitigate these cheats. IW seems unable to even delete the thosands of hacked entries on the leaderboards. But yet they have the gall to charge $15 for 3 new maps and 2 cut/paste jobs from MW1. This when other publishers always release SOME free content. It's insulting. So yeah, while I acknowledge that Microsoft screwed up this release, I find it hard to assign them much blame, compared to the mountain of blame I reserve for IW.

"But yet they have the gall to charge $15 for 3 new maps and 2 cut/paste jobs from MW1." I said the same thing about BF1943, which is a ripoff of 1942 for PC. The biggest slap in the face, is that they also make 1943 for PC, but you can find 1942 with the add-ons in the $10 bin of most game stores now, and there's not a lot of difference, except that 1942 includes tons more maps. Is it just me, or does anybody else find it funny that Paul often squawks about the repetitiveness of first person shooters, and yet all he does is play the same game online, over and over, just to increase his gamer score? I also like BF:BC. Haven't played BC2, but I plan to. I like interactive titles, and the characters are memorable in single player. Having a plot counts in my book, and that's not something you get with most war FPS series. It's refreshing to see a series like BF:BC and BIA. BIA is the game series that's the closest with respect to the emotional impact to the Band of Brothers TV mini-series that you can get, and I love it for exactly that reason. Ubisoft makes some amazing games. I'm hoping that they do a sequel to the previous Prince of Persia game though. The new one coming out is an insert into the Sands of Time Trilogy (in between 1 and 2). I liked the new branch that they started with the last released one though. Ok, I get it that it's Prince of *Persia*, but the whole Arabian Nights theme is getting a bit old. The more-ancient Zoroastrianism timeframe of the 2008 title is more interesting IMO. It's Persia before the Arab and Islamic influences. A lot of it blends with some of the older Indian traditions. The Sands of Time Trilogy should be left as it was. It's time to move on. I'm glad they did with the new spinoff, and I hope they continue it. I get the feeling that The Forgotten Sands is just filler material so that they get more time to work on sequel to the 2008 Prince of Persia. They said that The Forgotten Sands will coincide with the movie release, and that they reused the Assassin's Creed 2 engine for it, so it's just a marketing release more than anything. The art style of the 2008 spinoff is completely different though.

....um....I finished FF13 in about 10 days. Certainly one of the better stories, but the lack of towns where you interact with people and buy stuff at stores made the adventure feel kinda lonely and disconnected. Maybe it was designed that way given the plot....all I know is that the missions on Pulse seemed like too much filler, and I know it was really just the "level-up sandbox" so that you could get enough skill points to defeat Orphan. It was a good ride though, and the ending certainly felt complete. Spoiler: when you see the ending, you'll understand the design of the logo a little more.

@unndunn - another pointer to the incompetence of Infinity Ward I never cared that MW2 was a console port (I don't like it, but I could live with that (as I do with BBC2)). But the decision to not allow dedicated servers is what kept me from buying the PC game. Because with dedicated servers, the admins can kick players clearly cheating, and you as a player can find well run servers that allow you to play the types of modes and maps you like. IW wanted control and they have it. How's that all working out? Exactly. As for what Paul is saying, I agree. These companies don't mind charging 60 dollars for a game, the least they can do is get the content out. As for being worked up, people can have normal happy lives and still be irked by incompetence; if it's not something that bothers you then skip the article. Gfryesc1 spends his life reading a blog he can't can't stand by an author he detests, and yet he's got the gall to say Paul is too old to play video games. Kind of ironic, but it still makes me laugh.
