Microsoft Marks the One-Year Anniversary of Windows Vista

Depending, of course, on how you measure such things:

365 days and 100 million licenses later, enthusiasm for a safe, reliable and engaging Windows Vista experience is high. In a roundtable Q&A, members of the Windows Vista team and others reflect on the past year and how Vista’s presence in the marketplace is maturing.

Neil Charney: Personally, I know that the test of anything new for me is: Would I go back to what I was using before? When it comes to Windows Vista, for me it’s emphatically no.

Today, Windows Vista supports over 43,000 hardware products, almost doubling the 23,000 thousand at launch.

Today more than 900 hardware partners have certified thousands of devices and hardware components for Windows Vista that support new innovations in graphics, networking and imaging. We now have 3,494 software and 3,360 hardware products available on retail shelves.

One can only hope that SP1 will make Vista what it should have been one year ago. In terms of general performance, I didn't find it that much slower than XP. But file copying, especially over networks, was absolutely atrocious. I couldn't believe they released it performing as it was. Then there were hardware incompatibilities. I'm still ticked that my relatively new ATI All-in-Wonder X800 series card didn't work (worse, ATI still has the gall of calling it Vista compatible. The basic video driver is, sure, but none of the video capture and TV functionality will work. Everything I've read about SP1 makes it sound like these were two of the main issues they worked on, so here's hoping. (I'm not holding my breath on the AIW--ATI has essentially dropped its AIW lineup in terms of Vista support.

One year of Vista and its rolling along. Can't wait for SP1 to finally get it where it should be. A nice speed up would be nice.
