Microsoft ships preview of Windows 7-based Embedded OS

So why is this notable? The current version of Windows Embedded, called Windows Embedded Standard 2009, is based on Windows XP. Microsoft never made a version based on Windows Vista. Interesting.

Today, Microsoft Corp. released the Windows 7-based Windows Embedded Standard 2011 (formerly code-named "Quebec") Community Technology Preview (CTP) to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and developers of specialized devices worldwide through its immediate public availability. Windows Embedded Standard 2011 delivers the latest Windows 7 technologies to OEMs, enabling them to bring high-performing specialized devices to market faster, to differentiate those devices through innovative user experiences, and to delight their customers with devices that extend the Windows user experience to specialized devices from Windows-based PCs, servers and online services.

Windows Embedded Standard 2011 delivers the power, familiarity and reliability of the Windows 7 operating system in a highly customizable and componentized form, enabling OEMs in industrial automation, entertainment, consumer electronics and other markets to focus on their core competencies and create product differentiation.

Another sign that Microsoft is rapidly putting the bad taste of Vista behind it.

"the bad taste of Vista" As Mini said a few weeks ago: "I've got to say: in my opinion, Microsoft has turned The Corner. You know The Corner. The one that gets us off of pothole ridden Vista Avenue (one street over from Lincoln in Blue Velvet). The Corner that requires Microsoft to shed some of the fat it has layered on recently just to make the turn without flipping. The one that requires a bit of humility for past failings (the aforementioned Vista, Xbox losses & red-ring, Zune's market performance so far, WinMo asleep at the wheel, no coherent brand strategy, search lagging behind for so long, the abandonment of IE after IE6, a confused developer story, a bungled Yahoo! acquisition attempt, etc etc etc). The Corner that perhaps doesn't get us out of the bad neighborhood, but is at least pointing us in the right direction. " http://minimsft.blogspot.com/

Was there a Windows Embedded based on Windows 2000?

"Having trouble staying on topic?" Why did you only quote that part of the citation?

Technically you could license Vista as Windows Embedded Enterprise, but it only differed from Vista retail in licensing. Windows Embedded also skipped Windows 2000 so its not really that big of a deal that Vista was also skipped.

"Having trouble staying on topic?" Having trouble reading? Those weren't his words, they were "Mini's". You know, the guy from Microsoft. Learn to read, Waethorn.

"Having trouble reading?" It was Ocean's post and it was off-topic. What is that saying that you use over and over again? Oh ya: "STFU!".

Why has this turned into a Vista bashing topic? Vista was a great OS that developers just weren't prepared to support... The only reason I upgraded to Win 7 is because I got it for free, if not for that I would be perfectly happy on my turbo fast Vista Ultimae.

"it was off-topic." In what world? It was a comment on Paul's blog posting.

"Hmmm ... Interesting to see Microsoft give its technologies the name of my Canadian province!!" Interesting. I had a bad time the last time I was there. I will be back some time next month. Wae had a list of stuff to do in Montreal, so, maybe this time I'll have some fun. :)

"Wae had a list of stuff to do in Montreal" What was that? 1) Eat at McDonald's 2) Throw up in the street 3) Troll for customers at the Montréal Apple Store http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOsidYiWca4

@Crakenstein: "Vista was a great OS that developers just weren't prepared to support" I beg to differ. Vista is a decent OS with many flaws, especially at the start. It was/is slow (I go from my Win 7 to Vista machines regularly, with the vista machines having better hardware than Win7 laptop), counter intuitive compared to Windows 7 (something that I didn't notice until I started regularly working with both OSes), and, frankly, a little ugly. I'm curious how you made Vista "turbo fast".

"I'll say it before Waethorn does: Classy." Sad thing is, a Canadian McDonald's has more class than a 5-star New York fine dining establishment. At least I know that a Cdn McDonald's can pass a health inspection. You know, without any bribe money being involved.

Enough of the Vista bashing. Why no post about the Windows Phone release date? Or the release of that awesome browser Opera 10.

@dipshitshady: You're not very intelligent. And it clearly shows. Like some people should pass a test to drive, fly planes and the like, people should pass a test to be allowed to access the internet. Someone should take your access away.

robertsgay, you make me laugh! there's having intelligence and knowing how/when to use it... it makes for much more fun.

My fave at McDonalds Canada: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJUgS9UlcFE In the States, they advertise it as an Angus 1/3 Pounder instead. No Ciabatta bun. "American" cheese instead of real cheddar (only American's would make a claim to "processed cheese" - the correct name that every other country calls it), etc, etc (not to mention still using plastic moulded seats - scary!). Same price dollar-wise (~$6US vs. ~$6CDN). Where is the love?! Different class of patrons too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-1yhT08F_8
