Microsoft splits Zune team in two

An interesting and timely report from Ina Fried over at CNET. I've emphasized a few important bits...

Microsoft has quietly reorganized its Zune team, splitting up the hardware and software teams, CNET News has learned.

The software and services portion of the Zune team--the bulk of its staff--will be added to the portfolio of Enrique Rodriguez, the vice president who currently runs Microsoft's Mediaroom and Media Center TV businesses. The hardware team, meanwhile, will now report to Tom Gibbons, who also leads the hardware design efforts within Microsoft's Windows Mobile unit.

The move was made on January 22, as Microsoft made its first-ever companywide layoffs--layoffs which also hit the Zune team, although Microsoft won't say how many people were cut. It also follows a holiday quarter in which Zune sales dropped by more than half from a year earlier.

In an hour-long interview on Thursday, Rodriguez said the move was not made in response to recent Zune sales, but rather as the company looks to create a more unified entertainment business and gears up to expand the Zune service to be available on more than just Microsoft's own devices.

"The goal is to make non-gaming entertainment a first-class citizen within Microsoft's business," he said. That means building better software and gaining scale "a little further out than just in Redmond."

Rodriguez ... did say to expect products within this calendar year that take the Zune service beyond just Microsoft's own line of digital music players.

"Zune the service needs to transcend Zune the device," Rodriguez said. But that doesn't mean Rodriguez doesn't see a need for Microsoft to keep making the Zune.

Rodriguez said that a large part of the reorganization was about bringing more heads together to work on a unified entertainment approach, one that is headed toward a more cloud-based approach.

So, they expect 3rd parties to "partner" with them again? After the Plays For Sure debacle? There must be more naiveté out there than I thought possible...

@chuckb84 - "So, they expect 3rd parties to "partner" with them again?" I read it differently...I read it as Microsoft porting the Zune software to operate on more devices than the current Zune hardware. If a 3rd party doesn't want to have the Zune software on it's device, they do not have to. Think WinMo phones first. I am hoping that the Zune software will be a downloadable application, like the thousands of other available for WinMo. --tayme

"So, they expect 3rd parties to "partner" with them again? After the Plays For Sure debacle? There must be more naiveté out there than I thought possible..." If it's good enough, they will get partners. Considering that their only other option is to go with Google--which probably won't do anything to go against the wishes of the school bully, Apple-- there's really not much of a choice.

Methinks this presages the end of Zune.

I really hope that Zune can get some traction with this move, and I think it's a smart one. Although I've (personally) enjoyed the Zune hardware, it's been the UI and software that have made me most happy! The interface on the device itself is really great, and is probably better than rest out there -- including the iPod (yeah... I went there). Since the redesign, the Zune software is also truly wonderful. Nice to look at, fun to use, and works great. Both of those items -- the UI and software -- can certainly be ported to other hardware, including mobile phones. I'd love to see it! Obviously everyone is "out to beat Apple", and that is an uphill battle for sure. Just ask Apple! They've been chasing Windows (in market share, at least) for years and years. Whether or not "the product is better", taking a chunk out of a ~90% market share just ain't easy.....ever. Apple's strength and weakness, however, has always been their "we live and operate in our own world" mentality. They control their stuff from the top down, but it will ultimately bite them in the end (har har). I personally believe that people ultimately desire "choice" over a close ecosystem, and Apple *does not* offer that.

is Allard still on the Zune or has he moved on?

I think it makes sense. The device should not get in the way of the software. I think MS will have a lot more success with Zune if it's a service on WinMo7. They will push a lot of 'zunes' that way. When are people going to realize....MS is a software company and the initial zune hw, was really the only way to establish the brand. Like it or not, you have heard of zune.....it's now a household name....and with that a large potential market(place).

" I would be glad to be able to use my PDA with the Zune software. I would rather use my Zune30 for my music, and my PDA for the podcast.

As much as people like to make this about Zune...I believe it is much more about entertainment in general. I am completely behind them if this is part of a holistic approach to their entertainment platform. To date, the vision of "connected entertainment" hasn't worked. I'd say the primarily issue is that are forcing content providers to pick and choose from their own platforms. A prime example, NetFlix...it should have been available through Media Center the same day they added it to XBox. To do this, they need a standardized development & delivery system. And obviously Mobile has been left out the product roadmaps al together...so that is something they are addressing now. I think Media Center will undergo some of biggest changes. We'll see. I give Microsoft credit for making some tough decisions and recognizing the need to adjust to new market trends.

I sure hope they make the Zune compatible with Windows Media Player and Media Center. That and release it here in Europe. They have support for both syncing and buying music through online stores in Windows Media Player, why do they simply not make it compatible with the Zune? No matter how good the Zune Software is I just can't get around the fact that they already have a damn fine Media Player practically built into Windows. I use MediaMonkey to tag and organize my music and then I use WMP to play it and sync it to my iPod using MGTEK dopisp. I would get a Zune but it isn't available here, so I use an iPod.

I love the Zune, but for Canadians it still seems to be one-sided. The software is great, the experience is great, and the Marketplace is... non-existent. At least Plays for Sure had partners who offered the service in Canada (like poor old Napster). I'm patient, but not for much longer; Apple's decision to offer non-DRM'd music in iTunes has moved me ever-so-much closer to finally succumbing to the charms of the iPod.

"Apple's decision to offer non-DRM'd music in iTunes has moved me ever-so-much closer to finally succumbing to the charms of the iPod." But you forget the most horrible thing about that: having to use iTunes! You'd be better served with this: http://inmusic.ca Free commercial-free radio stations, music news, artist bio's, and there's a link to the MP3 music store via the "Shop" link on the far right. Yes it's powered by http://mp3.puretracks.com (no software necessary to download too)

51% of the traffic. pffft ATT announced a activation of only 1.1 million new Iphones this past quarter. Yes that is right the mega mover Iphone only activated 1.1 million phones. Where are all those other ones? Can this be a repeat of last year? Sellinjg what 4.4 but only using 1.1. You be the judge.

And now Windows Mobile is getting a DRMed music store. Welcome to 2002, Microsoft.
