Microsoft Zune HD 4.5 Update is Live

Microsoft reports that the Zune HD 4.5 firmware update is now available. (Note that this update is for the Zune HD device only, and not for the Zune PC software.)

There's a horrible You Tube video describing the update if you are looking for a reason to mock Microsoft:

I wish they dial down the faux cool stuff, I really do. This update's neat. Don't ruin it.

I have it on good authority that the Zune interface will soon be matched with magical hardware to produce a truly game-changing tablet device.

Wow...that's nice. A software-update for those 10 people that still use your device. Btw: has Microsoft shipped a tablet yet? Or are you still happy with mockups and a Windows Mobile 7 that'll ship in November 2010 without c/p capabilities and multitasking? iPhone OS 4.0 will be announced within a few days. That'll drop Windows Mobile 7 back another 18 months. And they were already lagging some 30+ months behind. Can you say 'Microsoft missed the boat again?'

Paul, am eagerly waiting for your review of the iPad (hoping it will be mroe balanced than the reviews by the Apple-fawning usual suspects). Sometimes, I am disappointed that you let some snide and unnecessary remarks slide through in your reviews of Apple products, but atleast it is not as ludicrous as what other sites/MSM has been doing the past week... And considering there have been more capable, cheap and versatile tablets that can run any app and play any content has been available for a looong time... and whose UI is friendly too (this is subjective, but it is nowhere as bad as lemmings would like everyone to believe)... and where you have more choice of hardware, probably better reliability (based on my experience with iphones 2g and 3g)... anyways, i am digressing... the long and short is, please bring on your reviews soon.... A balanced, slow review would be great but initial impressions make for interesting reading too... Try hard as I might, I cannot find a use for this product when I have a laptop and an iPhone...atleast, it is not a dud like Apple TV :-)

"Sometimes, I am disappointed that you let some snide and unnecessary remarks slide through in your reviews of Apple products" Umm....it would not be a Paul Thurrott Apple review then. I am sure he wont disappoint either when he drops his final review. I read this review of it.... http://www.macworld.com/article/150330/2010/04/ipadreview.html Both that review and Paul's are very close. Both talk about the same negatives, heavy, smudges etc. In fact the Macworld review questions it as a reader and states that if someone only wants an E-reader and nothing else get a Kindle. That said the Macworld review is completely devoid of childish, snarky comments?? Reading the Mac world review I did not get the sense that the writer was foaming at the mouth with jealousy, hatred or whatever?? Paul's current review and the Macworld review would be great to dissect in some class at a journalism school.

@rr0de74: See, that's something that strikes me as strange because I have heard Paul's podcasts and read his articles on other sites... I don't see this much snide remarks there... I wonder if it is the comments on this blog that prompt him to include those remarks here or being a personal blog (and not a paid site), he is able to vent his annoyance at the apple-fawning that hides (almost) all of Apple's flaws and gives them a clean chit... Well, it is his blog, and a lot of his comments and observations are spot-on... I can always weed out what I don't want and appreciate the other aspects of his review.

@Logjamming - No worries here. I use Macs at home for the most part(except for my Vista Media Center PC, which is currenly sitting idle due to a hardware issue that I haven't gotten around to fixing yet) and the company that I work for is still on XP on the desktop for the most part. The W7 PCs that we do have are managed well, and we have not had any security or performance issues. We will be rolling the rest of our 200,000+ users to 7 this year. As far as your opinion of me - no worries there, either. I think it is evident who has decades of experience in IT and who is posting crap because they have drank the iKoolAid. Were you first in line for an iPad this past weekend, even though you have no use for one? I wasn't. My MBP, Palm Pre, and Kindle meet all of my needs when I travel, plus I can read the Kindle at the beach with no glare issues. Enjoy! --tayme

@Logjamming: OK. Now that I see what level you would like to have any discussion at, let me see if I cannot clarify some points for you and elevate your thinking :-) Tayme's point is that any operating system has patched and unpatched vulnerabilities... and those unpatched vulnerabilities exist for years, sometimes... Just as the zune users are statistically insignificant when compared to iPod users, so are the mac users (not so true anymore, since mac is the only other viable alternative to windows for some reason, sorry linux users even though your systems are much better)... so, there is no need to insult the zune users who love updates just as much as ipod users do because it adds value to their purchase... And again, feel free to insult me however you please because when a charge is unsubstantiated, it make the accuser look stupid...

@Ocean: That seems to be a more down-to-earth review of the iPad than all the ones that I was able to find... I agree that when it comes to battery life, Apple has almost nailed it! However, the lack of camera, usb ports, direct/managed common file system access, not associating a document to a single application only but instead allowing it to be shared among applications etc. are very necessary if I can drop my laptop at home and use this tablet... Anyways, a better review than the ones I have read thus far... Gen 2 or Gen 3? Or probably iPhone OS 4+ might take care of some of these issues... Until then, I will wait and watch...

"See, that's something that strikes me as strange because I have heard Paul's podcasts and read his articles on other sites" I have thought the same thing for a long time. I used to listen to Windows weekly(before it became about xbox gaming, Apple and Google). Leo is a just a very easy going, likable guy that gets along with anyone. My thought is that Paul has to act professional there and for the magazine, but on his own blog his true colors come out. Its like an obsession with taking Apple down or whatever. Its weird to be honest. If I had a blog that covered MS and its products I would write nothing about Apple stuff.

@ Daniel. This was my reply to a similar question in another post. I would say readability due to its larger size? Faster processor/graphics? I think it is a great machine for getting some stuff done while laying on the couch, in bed or something. At least, that would be my primary use. Coupled with iWork, the iDisk app, and the Omnifocus and Papers app I could get some serious work done whilst in relaxation mode. Mind you, I am still contemplating if I should get one. I own a MBA that allows me to do most of that work too. But that's not a complaint about the iPad, but about tablets in general.

Fair enough, now why should I buy one? Why should I ditch my netbook, OSXSL-Win7HP Dual boot, for this thing? What am I missing that I need from this thing?, and dont tell me a keyboard. Also can you explain to me why the iPod touch is a more desirable device than a Zune HD. Do you have a Zune HD? "However, the lack of camera, usb ports, direct/managed common file system access, not associating a document to a single application only but instead allowing it to be shared among applications etc. are very necessary" You really should play around with one to see if those will really harm your ability to use it the way you want to, instead of deciding it from afar based on specs and stats.

Hey, I don't care if you buy one or not: I don't own any Apple stock. Like I said, I am not sure if I am going to buy one either. I don't have an iPod Touch. I have an iPhone 2G and 3GS and, together with my MBA, is pretty sufficient for music on the road. What is more interesting is to ask questions about Paul's selective argumenting, where he dismisses features Apple already has and praises the same features that Microsoft promises, but has not yet delivered.

"Please explain to me in an intellignet and articulate manner, why the iPad is a "Magical and Revolutionary Product At an Unbelivable Price." From the link I posted above: "I will add that every single app has been optimized for use with touch, and it shows throughout the entire iPad user experience. All controls open where you expect them to appear, and manipulating them by touch is intuitive and natural. I recently bashed Microsoft for not taking the same care with its products, and I stand by that more than ever. I believe that Microsoft should give an iPad to every software engineer at the company so they can see first-hand how these things should be done." Attention to detail matters. It's often the little things that mark the difference between really good and insanely great. "All three of the iWorks apps are outstanding examples of how a production app should work with the touch interface. Nothing in the interface gets in the way of seeing the work on the screen, yet is easily invoked when needed. The attention to detail in Pages, Numbers and Keynote is incredible. I had doubts whether these could turn the iPad into a productive work device — those doubts are gone now."

@Ocean: Yeah, I see your point about playing with one, but here's what I am thinking... My phone with a matrix of icons where each app does its own thing, doesn't talk to the other apps or share documents etc. might be ok, but if I have to find a use for a table and replace my laptop, it must do more... I might edit a document in quick office and then I should be able to open the same document in iWork (without mailing it, something that I can do with pics in any pic application by picking it from the picture browser, working on it and saving it back so it is ready to be used elsewhere)... I want to be able to do this with any file format... the security issue is almost non-existent so I do not understand this walled garden approach... A front facing camera for skype chats is very important for me, but not a deal breaker (anyways, we will have it in gen 2, so no worries)... I want it to be easy to get my pics off my camera... i do not want a separate accessory that I need to pay another 30$ for, when it can be included in the same flat package (any company wants to make profits, but come on, this is fleecing)... i want to plug in my usb port, open the documents in that usb drive and work on them and save them back... just being able to do most of the stuff I can in a cheaper, light (not lighter, but light enough) laptop/netbook will definitely motivate me to buy one of these... i am a big proponent of tablets and have really enjoyed all the hp tablets I have purchased in the past... currently a happy camper with lenovo laptops and am looking forward to buying a good tablet in the future... i wish the iPad was it, but sadly, for my purposes, it is not... The same old staid interface that do not make much sense in a device of this dimensions and it has the (almost) same limitations as my iPhone... (Even though this post as longer than I intended to make it, the gripes are real... and I believe apple should have "really" tried to give us a good tablet and not an apple's version of a netbook)

Here is a Q&A with Om Malik: Q: Everything your describing above can easily be done on either a netbook, laptop or desktop. The only delta presumably is the portability of the iPad – but you already have that with a laptop/netbook. What I’m looking for is for someone to describe something that iPad does that I cannot do elsewhere. So far no one has written about this. A: First of all thanks for your kind remark and even reading my points of view. I will try and answer your questions/ What iPad can do? Well it can do whatever that we do today, a lot better. What more can it do — I will know in time. http://gigaom.com/2010/04/02/why-ipad-will-change-blogging-for-me/

@ Backup77 @Dr. Daniel Jackson I also prefer using the Zune Software. It's my media player of choice on Windows. I only use iTunes to manage media on my iPhone and download podcasts. I especially like the rating mechanic for music on the Zune Software that boils down to just like, dislike and neutral. I never liked using the star rated mechanic and with the Zune Software, I can easily build up a quick playlist of the music that are my favourites.

I found fixing ID3 tags and finding album info was awesome on the Zune, WAY better than iTunes, I will say large library is sorely needed in the Zune, my 250 gig library is a dog to load and browse through,
