Microsoft Zune HD 4.5 Update is Live

Microsoft reports that the Zune HD 4.5 firmware update is now available. (Note that this update is for the Zune HD device only, and not for the Zune PC software.)

There's a horrible You Tube video describing the update if you are looking for a reason to mock Microsoft:

I wish they dial down the faux cool stuff, I really do. This update's neat. Don't ruin it.

I think Microsoft's announcement on Monday could mean big things for always-connected phones.

Kindle at the beach... Running anything more sophisticated than a transistor radio at the beach is just nuts. Paperbacks are the most efficient, worry free, least pretentious, beach friendly content management/delivery system available. No glare, no smudges, and they go great with relish.

I'll take my Zune over any ipod any day. The service is better for music, better for podcast and is better software to boot. Itunes even sucks on a Mac, you'd think they'd learn how to write software for their own platform. I thought the program just sucked because they can't write decent software for Windows.

@LC21 - You are correct about electronics at the beach...sand and salt water plays havoc on them. Lets say...I can read my Kindle on a bright, sunny day sitting on my patio, while enjoying a margarita! --tayme

@tayme What exactly has a service pack on Mac OSX got to do with an article on Zoon? As it happens, I've used iPods for years. I have NEVER, EVER, seen a Zune in the flesh. On the other hand I've seen thousands of people using iPods and iPhones. Therefore, in my experience, I would say that there's less than 10 people on the planet using a Zune and Paul probably knows them all.

@ Wibble. Don't worry: Tayme believes he can use a Zune in the daylight, whereas in fact, he cannot. That's why he moved from the beach to his patio. He can't keep track of all the arguments he uses. It's probably the New Busy. Or Nev bus, if you're on a Windows 7 Mobile Machine (if it's readable in daylight) http://www.crunchgear.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/zuneun.jpg http://obamapacman.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/Zune-HD-OLED-display-p... http://assets.gearlive.com/blogimages/zune-hd-platinum-hold.jpg

Tayme: Blue Moon, slice of Orange, and a Moe Prager mystery. And no tech talk, no iPod vs Zune, no trashing the iPad. A beer, a book, and the sun.

There are plenty more reasons to mock Microsoft than just Zune. Although Zune is extremely pathetic on its own right. Their OS is inferior to OS X. PC are cheap nasty crap. Windows Mobile is a joke. Windows Phone looks like more crap. They are evil. They just copy. They are thieves.

@robertsjoe Why do you believe that the iPad is a game changer?

"Bad news about that HP Slate:" How about waiting until the thing is actually released before trusting two random comments on a site? I find it funny that you are deriding people for criticizing the iPad without using it, but yet, here you are already dismissing the Slate when it is not even out yet. I'll wait till it is released to see if the performance and video resolution is acceptable.

Wow, the hilarity continues. You guys are really circling the wagons around anything Microsoft - correction, anything non-Apple. Thanks for proving my point over and over and over again. I'm with LC21 on this one, a beer, a book, and the sun are much needed! --tayme

The 4.5 update is quite nice. I used the Smart DJ wirelessly .... very nice the way it picked songs off the Zune Marketplace and played them seamlessly with the songs on my device. Thanks to Microsoft for the update.
