MobileMe Beta Arrives ... Time For a Comparison?

I was pretty critical of Apple's MobileMe service when it arrived in 2008 because it was too expensive (i.e. "not free") and, like many Apple products, offered more to Mac users than it did to Windows users. These issues still exist two years later. But MobileMe has been updated and refined over this time period--again, as is typical of Apple products, let's give them that--and now a new beta version of the service is being tested. I've had a MobileMe account since it was called iTools years and years ago (and then ".Mac") and I maintain this expense so I can keep an eye on the competition.

And what the heck, it's pretty nice looking:

MobileMe Beta

With that in mind, I'd like to explore a series of articles this summer comparing the capabilities of the new Hotmail (see my review), Gmail, and the new MobileMe (and, if there's interest, hosted Exchange and possibly Yahoo!'s solutions, though I understand these things all hit slightly/vastly different markets). This is timely for me because I've been using the new Hotmail for a few weeks after several years as a Gmail users and I'm seriously considering just switching for good. I'm comparing things anyway, so what the heck.

So. For me, the important bits here are access interoperability (in this case, the ability to access the mail, contacts, and calendar data from any web browser on any platform, or from the rich Windows application of choice), device interoperability (the ability to seamlessly connect via push mechanisms to mail, contacts, and calendar from modern smart phone platforms like iPhone and Android), functionality (security, usability, actual features, etc.), and performance (across all the access points). That's off the top of my head anyway.

My question to you is: Is this of interest, and what other factors should be considered? In other words, what matters to you when you think about these types of email, contacts, and calendar solutions?

Yes, and yes for hosted exchange.

Please do the comparisons.  I'm using a combination of different email providers and contact/calendar sync systems and I need to get everything consolidated.

But Paul, you've got to take off those rose colored glasses when you report on the offerings from Apple! They're not perfect, you know.

We have Exchange 2003, which works very well with the iPhone and the DROIDs. Some of us prefer to see our daily schedule for the month, in text, not symbols. So several of us found that Google calendar works very well with several iPhone apps [two have a limited free version that sync for 2 to 4 weeks]. Well, thanks to Mike Galos, we use Google sync to sync Gcal with Outlook [rather than a more cumbersome export/ import] and it all works seamlessly, pushing changes in an instant. However, a few subscribe to MobileMe because of autowipe for their iPhone [one doc left his iPhone in the bathroom and it looks as if some patient walked off with it 15 minutes later. He did not have it password protected and no MobileMe at the time] as well as media integration.  When Live and MobileMe is fully updated, I would like to see the comparison chart. I just don't think that MobileMe is worth the cost to many, when there are free alternatives.

Am I the only who has noted that Apple took the (hidden) Preview Pane UI of Hotmail and Windows Live Mail and Outlook 2010?

BTW, I did want to acknowledge that I have tried other services and some iPhone apps, but Exchange and some Google stuff [yes Paul, I admit that it was your idea], seems to be best for me and the wife. Outlook for Windows and MS Entourage for Mac is what we prefer. Apple gave Windows users the iPod and iPhone, and Microsoft Outlook, Exchange and Entourage makes it all work very well for us. I really can't wait to try out Outlook for Mac.

I started with hotmail for years when I was only on Windows.  I moved to Gmail for a short while because it had some better features, and hotmail was lagging especially on my WinMo phone.

When I went got a few Mac's in the house and a iPhone from work I went to MobileMe.  It is an "OK" service, especially if you are Mac/iPhone but the web interface is super slow and over all it cost to much.  I have the beta, its different but just a slow.

I am moving back to Windows 7, just this last week and Live/Hotmail looks to be at the top of my list.  I never have fully trusted Google, and never really liked the conversation only mode.

If you do a review of them wait until after Apple's iFest next month because I read a rumor about MobileMe becoming free.  If that is true then I bet you will see some ads in it.  It has to become free at this point.  Apple needs to fight Google and the new hotmail/live looks better on paper and its free.
