NBC launches NBC Direct online TV service

Mashable exclusively reveales NBC's new online service:

NBC Direct, the free service from NBC that lets you download full episodes of The Office, 30 Rock, Scrubs, Heroes and more, has gone live on the NBC site.

Currently in beta, and originally scheduled to launch in October, the new video viewing service allows you to download the latest episodes of NBC shows directly to your computer for viewing in a special player. Getting set up to do this is rather annoying. First off, it’s Internet Explorer only, then once you download the player, if you don’t have the latest .NET framework, you’ll be downloading that also. Next: Windows Media needed a security update on top of it all. On a Mac? Sorry, can’t help. Outside of the US? You’re out of luck too.

Once you’ve jumped through all of their hoops, you can start choosing videos to download. All episodes are available for only seven days after they initially air, and once you start watching your video you only have 48 hours to view it before it deletes. You can choose to subscribe to your favorite shows so you’ll get the new episodes automatically each week. All the shows contain video ads which cannot be skipped.

Very interesting. Will need to play with this, as I've already missed a number of new episodes of various shows this season.

IE only, US only, yet another custom media player required, and you can't play them on an iPod or any other portable device. This blows.

This is hardly news. They already had the service available for quite awhile. Originally, it was designed for Centrino and Viiv capable systems, but it did offer downloadable videos with time-restricted DRM. Only now, they've opened it up to the general populous (sorta), but now the access restrictions are tighter, and you can't fake your way around the location check. I used to be able to get access from here in Canada on my Centrino Duo notebook....not anymore!

What would be nice is eventually to have these sites be Opera compatible as then I could use my Wii to watch these shows on my big screen!

I find that NBC's free streaming service is more useful to me than the download service. The streaming service lets you go back several episodes rather than just the latest episode. This feature got me interested in Heroes, otherwise I probably would never have bothered to start watching. The streaming quality is good enough, but not as good as the download. The subscription service sounds is interesting. The video player installation experience was crappy and required me to restart the video player. I'm certainly not opposed to NBC offering their stuff for free, but I'd like to see more flexibility and choice of programming. I'm will to watch a few ads if I don't have to pay for it.
