Office 2010 Released to Manufacturing

Microsoft announces some big news via its Office 2010 Engineering Blog:

Earlier today we reached the release-to-manufacturing (RTM) milestone for Office 2010, SharePoint 2010, Visio 2010 and Project 2010!

RTM is the final engineering milestone of a product release and our engineering team has poured their heart and soul into reaching this milestone. It is also an appropriate time to re-emphasize our sincere gratitude to the more than 5,000 organizations and partners who have worked with us on rapid deployment and testing of the products. Since the start of our public beta in November 2009, we’ve had more than 7.5 million people download the beta version – that’s more than 3 times the number of 2007 beta downloads! The feedback that we’ve received from all these programs has shaped the set of products we’re excited about, and that I’m sure will delight our customers.

Our Volume License customers with active Software Assurance (SA) on these products will be one of the first to receive the 2010 set of products. They will be able to download the products in English via the Volume Licensing Service Center starting April 27. Customers without SA will be able to purchase the new products through Volume Licensing from Microsoft partners starting May 1.

Earlier this year we announced that we will officially launch Office 2010 to our business customers on May 12 with Stephen Elop, President of Microsoft’s Business Division, delivering a keynote as part of our virtual launch. Our virtual launch will allow people from around the globe to participate in our launch. The virtual launch site will showcase product demos, customer and partner testimonials, and interviews with product managers and executives, and we hope this will give you another great way to explore, learn, and get excited about the 2010 releases.

Office 2010 will first become available in retail stores in June in the US, and customers can pre-order these retail versions of Office 2010 at http://store.microsoft.com/OfficePreorder today to receive Office when it becomes available.

Nice! I'm looking forward to getting the final build.

And the inevitable first question will be: When will we get Office 2010 via MSDN or TechNet Plus? I'm meeting with the Office folks soon, so I'll ask.

Excellent! I really hope Google sorts their sync out. It didn't really work with the beta.

Paul, are you going to Redmond soon? I was just curious as to what other Microsoft teams you'll be meeting with. Ans what you'll be able to tell to us.

Any word on upgrade pricing from Office 2007?

What is Microsoft saying about upgrades from the beta, or from 2007? Do we need a clean install?, my experiences with upgrading from 2007 were less than desirable with the beta. Why Microsoft didn't feel it necessary to give us a RC is a mystery to me.

Awesome, I love Office 2010. I can't go back to an earlier version of Vizio. Can't wait to get this for $10 from my company's Microsoft home use program.

So, one of the weird things about Office 2010 is that there are no Upgrade versions this time. That doesn't mean you can't do an upgrade. Just that there there no Upgrade SKUs.

According to this, Office 2010 will hit Microsoft Home Use Program around June. http://cit.nih.gov/ServiceCatalog/Microsoft_hup.htm

Silverstreak: "MS loves Tuesdays (for some reason)" The reason comes down from Thomas Watson of IBM who made it a rule at IBM. The thinking is that the earlier an announcement is made in the week the more coverage it will get but things announced on Monday get lost since the news media uses that day to catch up on weekend stories. The related rule is that you announce bad news on Friday afternoon, preferably after the major media outlet's deadlines. That puts the story into the weekend editions and shows that get much less readership and viewers. This was the title reference in The West Wing's episode, "Take out the Trash Day" which is a nickname for the Friday briefing.

"That doesn't mean you can't do an upgrade. Just that there there no Upgrade SKUs." Upgrade or uninstall 2007 first? What will be better? I would much rather prefer to upgrade, but will this breaks things like say outlook? Like it did with the beta.

Office 2010 RTM leaked today, BTW. So if you, um, know where to look ... it is out there. No changes worth mentioning per se, though SkyDrive appears to be down for the count at the moment. I won't write up the RTM version until that's OK, of course.

Daniel, I'm not a big fan of upgrades. I've always uninstalled the previous version first, and that seemed to work fine in this case, certainly.

I always thought the upgrade path to the latest version of Office just performed an uninstall of the old version. Or did I just make that up in my head?

That's Dr. Daniel to you Mr. Thurrott, I know a lot of people know "where" to look, but I would always recommend caution when deploying those installs, remember all the mal-ware that was in the Windows 7 leaks.

Is there any news on sku changes..mainly, is oulook gonna be on the home edition as this is our biggest bug bearer when selling the product. No matter how hard i try to convince people wlm is a better option i think its stuck in their minds that outlook is essential.

Is Works dead? If so, what gets installed on new PC's?

This is good news. 'Course, I'll have to uninstall Office 2007 when the time comes. 64-bit Office requires that after all.
