Remaining Ultimate Extra Language Packs Released

And you thought Windows Ultimate Extras was a complete joke. Well, OK. You were right. But here we are, just 10 short months after Vista shipped to consumers, and Vista Ultimate users now have an amazing array .. of ... well, hmm. OK, I can't really continue this one with a straight face. But apparently the guys over at theWindows Vista Ultimate Blog can, God love 'em:

We are pleased to announce the release of the remaining 19 languages packs for Windows Vista Ultimate. This Ultimate Extras release brings the total number of language packs for use with Windows Vista Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) to 35. Windows Vista Ultimate enables users install multiple languages on their system and quickly switch between them by associating a system language with their login name.

MUI is particularly useful in multilingual homes where multiple people use a single computer and choose different languages for their primary use. People who wish to learn a new language will also find MUI to be a particularly useful feature.  We are aware of a very large number of customers who have purchased Ultimate for this feature specifically and are gratified that these customers can now realize the full benefit of Windows Vista Ultimate.

The languages we are adding today are as follows:

Arabic
Bulgarian
Croatian
Czech
Estonian
Greek
Hebrew
Hungarian
Latvian
Lithuanian
Polish
Portuguese (Portugal)
Romanian
Serbian (Latin)
Slovak
Slovenian
Thai
Turkish
Ukrainian

In addition to the release of the remaining Language Packs, a component in the language pack installation process called lpksetup.exe has also been updated. This updated component addresses previous issues which some customers have experienced with language pack installations and so it is recommended that you download and install this component first.  The updated lpksetup.exe can be found on Microsoft Download Center at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942903

Nothing like putting the onus on the user there, eh Microsoft? Geesh.

I think a good candidate for Vista Ultimate Extras would be things like a Microsoft version of Apple's iLife suite. Why not throw in a version of DVD Maker or Movie Maker with more features, templates, transitions, etc? Or how about an updated version of Microsoft Photostory? That's a great little app that's out there for XP, but hasn't had much press since Vista was released. Seeing features like the above would make it a much more compelling release than some Windows Hold'em game.

Sir_timbit01, that's a great idea. I wish you were running the Ultimate Extras department. I think they owe us bozo's who spent $400 something way cooler than Texas Hold'em. Now if they give me a free copy of Halo 3 for the PC via Ultimate Extras, that might smooth some ruffled feathers. I bought Ultimate, not for the features that they announced a year ago, but for the promise of other cool stuff in the future. Who'd thunk that a year later they're just now finishing up on the original promised stuff!

Reminds me of Steve Job's "secret features" in Leopard.

I envisaged Ultimate Extras as being a much more constant stream of stuff. Something to be genuinely interested in, on a weekly basis. Some weeks, I wouldn't have minded if there was nothing more than an "official" wallpaper or two. Other weeks, something interesting like Dreamscene (minus the CPU-draining performance). I don't think this would have been much to expect. Still, never mind.
