Silverlight 4 Now Available

As promised, Microsoft delivered Silverlight 4 today. Here's the word:

Microsoft has released Silverlight 4 to the web today. It is now available for download at: www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight.  In addition, Microsoft will also deliver a release candidate of Expression Blend 4 (compatible with Silverlight 4) this week; visit the Expression Studio Web site for more information.

In just five short months, Microsoft has gone from beta to the full release of Silverlight 4, with several landmark milestones along the way, including:

  • The release of Silverlight 4 beta at the Professional Developers Conference in November 2009 which  included powerful enhancements for enterprise application developers;
  • The release of Silverlight, Visual Studio and XNA Framework developer toolkits for Windows Phone 7 at Microsoft’s MIX conference in March 2010;
  • Also at MIX, the release of the Silverlight 4 release candidate and the announcement that Silverlight is now installed on nearly 60% of Internet-connected devices worldwide;
  • The announcement that Microsoft is working with Intel and Broadcom to deliver the Silverlight platform to set-top boxes, connected TVs, Blu-ray players and other devices, the unveiling of Internet Information Services (IIS) Media Services 4 and the delivery of the Silverlight Media Framework 2.0 at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show this month.
  • A number of customers such as Associated Press and eBay, and partners such as 352 Media andPlanView have announced their commitment to Silverlight 4. You can learn more about how customers are using Silverlight here.

You can get more information about Silverlight 4 on the Silverlight team blog and Scott Guthrie’s blog.

Thank you very much Paul for posting this. I immediately upgraded. I really have been impressed with Silverlight & continue to support it as a reasonable Flash alternative. I think it's incentive to Adobe to rebuild Flash from scratch.

Does anyone believe that Silverlight has a chance? At least people care that Flash doesn't work on anything designed for The Future™

Is Microsoft ever going to let the Moonlight team catch up on. I mean, they're only half way through implementing Silverlight 3 let alone the 4th one that's just come out now. Microsoft, let these people catch up first before you bring out a new one, geez!

I'd be quite happy to live without Flash and Silverlight; but since we're going to have them, I'd prefer we have options to easily turn them on and off. I rarely visit a page again if it's loaded with flash adds.
