Students to get Windows 7 for £30 in the UK ($30 in the US too!)

Tom Warren over at Neowin told me this morning about an excellent Windows 7 offer in the UK, where students will be able to get either Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional for just £30:

We are offering students the opportunity to buy Windows 7 for an amazing discounted price, £30 for either Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional.

You can take advantage of this offer from October 1st but you will need to be quick as it is for a limited time only and is only eligible to college and university students with a valid .EDU email address (an email address given by the college or university, for example: Suzanne@leeds.ac.uk ), a PC that is currently running a genuine copy of Windows Vista or Windows XP and can run Windows 7.

This offer will be available from 1st October so please check back then for details on how to take advantage of this great offer.

But Tom has some additional news of interest to those outside the US:

US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Korea and Mexico will also have similar offers but exact pricing varies by market.

Good stuff. Stay tuned.

UPDATE: Looks like the price is $29.99 in the US. Nice! Via twitter...

US college students - check out this amazing deal: Get Windows 7 for only $29.99! Details at http://bit.ly/win741

The site isn't live yet, but should be soon. Thanks again to Tom for keeping up on this.

This is nothing new. They had this type of program for XP, Vista and Office as well. It gets raped pretty bad as everyone knows someone in school. Then there is the corporate employee discount that you can get if your company is a big user of MS products. I got Office 2008 for $15. Then all new PC's come with Windows for the most part. Then of course its heavily pirated. You can easily by heavily discounted OEM versions all over the internet. Basically you get Windows jammed up your arsssse pretty cheaply, unless you go out of your way not to use it, or your a total moron and walk into Best Buy or where ever and pick it up for a really stupid price.

@Erico: If you ask robertsjoe, he will give you the same response: "It's all just a game." It makes you wonder why he's one of the most reviled poster here, doesn't it? What these games do is make people who actually want to have a discussion to wade through lines and lines of meaningless comments to find one that makes sense. That is annoying, no matter how you slice it.

"What these games do is make people who actually want to have a discussion to wade through lines and lines of meaningless comments to find one that makes sense. I'm truly curious to know what Zune fans think of this. I won't put any of my comments, but would really like to know reactions.

And yet I as a long time Vista user cannot pre order and if I do as a Vista Ultimate user I get ripped off. Guess who is boarding a pirate ship.

This is why I love Winsupersite Blog. Starts out with an interesting blog entry, then a comment about Apple is thrown in by one of the commentators. After we learn about certain members' IQ score, we moved on to speak about DRM in songs and now reviews for Zune from New York Time are being shown off. I love you guys. By the way, this is great news. My sister is a student in a college, maybe she will get this for me :P

According to Pogue's review, "90% of the songs are not copy protected", if that means anything.

Well done MIcrosoft. This is good news and a sensible price for students to pay for Windows 7. I will be interested to see what the pricing will be in Australia.

"Ocean said: Logjamming is a troll." Couldn't agree more. Also, I'm new here, but I've been reading the blog comments. Anyway, it's a good deal compared to the normal price of the OS. Should work well for those that wish to take advantage of it.

@mikegalos: "Anybody else note that despite all these desperate posts, Paul's points about the bogus artlcle weren't refuted?" Again, you're dreaming. There is zero desperation. We are simply making fun of Microsoft because of all the dumb, stupid, lame things they do. NO other reason. Apple had nothing to worry about. And Paul hasn't pointed out anything bogus, ever! The only bogus stuff is what's posted on the blog, the FUD being spread, and all the Microtards (like yourself) on here.

@chuckb84 I think the review is more positive than what I would expect from what I've heard of Pogue. The one thing that I would like to note about Appleinsider's article and some comments on this blog is that it is very premature to paint the Zune HD as a failure. Let's give it a chance first.

I'd say that Pogue's article is traditional FUD in that it's key takeaways are his suppositions of Microsoft dropping Zune and that iPod is the only real safe choice. That is, of course, combined with damning with faint praise to ensure that his fearfullness is taken seriously and as though it was said with an "I wish it weren't true..." tone. That's a textbook FUD campaign right out of IBM's mainframe sales team in the 1960s. Don't fight the features of a superior product, spread doubt about the rival company's unannounced future plans. Of course, in this case it's being spread by a supposed "objective journalist" and not the sales department of the technologically inferior corporation - at least officially.

You are all amazing. To be so closed and simple minded that you actually get emotional about the technology that you use as tools to work and entertain yourselves. It reminds me of a certain former(or possible current) poster on this site that actually called his computer "honey". Some of you are posting your nonsense here from early morning until late evening. You should all really take some time to enjoy life...real life. Get outside and breathe some fresh air. Revisit nature and see the real beauty of it. Watch your kids play a sport or music or in a theatrical production...better yet, join them. --tayme

Just canceled my Amazon Windows 7 preorder and got an order in at win741.com for a $20 savings. Thanks to Paul, Leo and my alumni email address! And Windows 7 Loader works great, but at least I will buy one copy.

Dave Pogue is spot-on. Of course, he is objective. He has got no MSCE-certificate to defend, like Mike. It just sucks that another 'great new product promise' from Microsoft has turned out to be a 'typical not so great product after all'. Perhaps you guys should auction your Zune on eBay before it's worth less than a hamburger.

What has surprised me is the very few students that actually take advantage of these deals. I spend a good amount of time at one of my daughter's university - visiting her, of course and watching her lead the dance team at half-time. I built her latop and natually loaded it with Office 2007 Professional (she'd started before Microsoft began their "Steal" campaign). As you might imagine, I also end up fixing a lot of her friends' computers. A lot of Dell's HP's and a fewer number of Macs. (Comments like, "we all use your daughter's laptop, because it is the only one that still works", or "Sorry, Mr. Ketchum, but my Mac's in the shop with a dead " are common (as I wait for them to finish up so I can review work they have asked me to look at and help with)). I've made a lot of these kids aware of the great deals out there that are for them. At the time, many of them respond positively - then they all fall back on: " We all use your daughter's laptop, because it has PowerPoint on it" - to which I remind them that the Ultimate version has PowerPoint included... Still... does not seem to get them motivated to take advantage of the deal. I does trouble me that so many low cost laptops have not made it past year two for these kids and a good bit more, that even these days, they are not taking advanatge of such deals. So many of them are content to use a loaner - where one exists. It's perhaps nice in many ways... they do seem to study, but I know that one laptop my daughter uses serves the needs of at least 12 other kids. I've met them and helped them with a lot of papers. It could also be that in part, they are there becuase there is FOOD (no wonder she manages to go through so much cash...). I haven't seen any other parents and there have been a lot of weekends that have come and gone. A lot of dead Dell and HP laptops (now fixed) and too few kids that seem to recognize the deals out there. I have said: "Do you realize how much money this will save you and your parents?" They smile and say they'll get it. The next weekend, there they are, hovered around my daughter's laptop waiting on their tern to do some work. My favorite? The calls I get at night that go like this: "Hi, Mr. Ketchum, you don't know me, but your daughter said I should call you... my computer is doing/won't do.... can you take control of it like you did so and so and fix it?" They're sweet kids, but the schools need to do more to a) teach them and b) make them aware of the deals that are out there. I've been to their store and not a mention of it... but I did note that he store director's desk had a Macbook Air on it... "just say'in.."

RJ, Palm abandoning Windows Mobile surprises you? You know, now that they have an excellent entrant in to the Mobile OS market, which they didn't have before. I'm surprised it took this long.

@rrode: "I want a Zune HD now. I want full screen third party ads before my app launches!!!" For something that you, robertsjoe, logjamming, etc. have no intention of buying, you sure do have a lot of things to say about it. You know what, you guys could organize tea parties to educate people about Microsoft. You would reach a bigger audience through that. Time doesn't seem to be an issue for you guys, and I'm sure you'll find a lot of like-minded people in most major cities.
