SuperSite Blog Daily Update: December 6, 2010

Good morning.

And it's sort of a good morning. I spent all day--literally all day--yesterday in the throws of a nasty bit of food poisoning, as did my wife. We're not sure what we ate, but it was a keeper. I'm still not feeling right, but at least I can sit upright and have actually though about eating again. My entire intake yesterday involved two bites of a banana (quickly ejected) and then 2 bottles of vitamin water. It was a great day.

But moving on....

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes that Windows Phone may be a game changer. Sure. And thanks for stealing my headline.

Google is launching its Google eBooks service today. Looking over the site, it's pretty clear this is an attack on the Amazon Kindle, which, frankly, already offers near-identical device support. (Except, of course, in the eBook reader department.)

Facebook has redesigned its user Profile page. Looks like you have to opt into it right now.

I wasn't aware that Amazon.com supported any other eReaders than the Kindle. I've always considered Amazon as a non-starter, as I use the Sony Touch.

The Google store doesn't look bad, but I haven't seen anything on it yet that I can't get from the Sony store.

I actually like the new Facebook Profile page. I was thinking, uhoh, when I first heard about it. So, I set mine up and now I am thinking it was a good idea. It is nice to see at a quick glance information which at one time was poorly organized.

"throes: intense or violent pain and struggle..." So throes, not throws. But, I imagine there WAS a lot of throwing going on. Yuck! I've had food poisoning before, so I know...MAN do I know! I feel for you.

Agree about Google eBooks -- but I did see something good in this announcement.

There seems to be momentum forming around this EPUB format, which Kindle and iPad don't support. Libraries support this format for "borrowing" eBooks, but the lack of EPUB support in Kindle and iPad means it's not usable on the two biggest eBook readers.

Hopefully Amazon will add EPUB support to the Kindle soon and there can be a consensus on a reliable target format that can reach all devices.
