SuperSite Blog Daily Update: September 23, 2010

I've been messing around with the blog and will experiment with changing things a bit. Here's the first step in a new direction.

GOG.com ("Good Old Games") infamously announced they were shutting down last week. Well, it was a hoax, thankfully. Not a funny one, but at least they're "back." Go buy some DRM-free games. This needs to survive.

It's official: Microsoft is big. And old. And not growing like they used to.

Doom and gloom for Windows Phone? Not according to Morgan Stanley, which says Microsoft will achieve 15 percent of the smart phone market by 2012, enough for a third place finish behind Android and Apple, and in a virtual tie with RIM and Nokia. Sounds about right to me.

Dissenting opinion here. I like Christopher Dawson a lot. But having used all three of the OSes in question--Android, iOS, Windows Phone--I have to disagree. These are the big three going forward.

And the hunter becomes the hunted. I see my own news stories and articles in Google news alerts every day or so. But very occasionally I see a link to a post that's about me. Sometimes it's weird being me.

Jason Hiner says the iPad is only good for two things. That's not strictly true. It makes for a fine $600 mirror too. Seriously, you could shave with this thing. Which means that one of the two things he mentions is negated by the mirror situation, sadly.

New Roku players are out, and they're coming with Crazy Eddie pricing. I just ordered the $99 version. Local playback? Yes, yes, yes.

My Droid X was updated to Android 2.2 "Froyo" yesterday. Eh. I'm more interested in the new Gmail app update.

From email (sender wished to remain anonymous): Microsoft is now putting their Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS) into every Enterprise Agreement whether you want it or not, at no additional cost. Just in case you thought they weren't serious about the cloud. But it does raise an interesting question: Is Microsoft trying to "pad" their BPOS adoptions with this tactic?

Liking the new blog format Paul. It's certainly a lot better than before. Still not great compared to Wordpress, but certainly a step forward and easier to read.

The new blog is showing up in Tahoma font. I'm running IE9 beta on Windows 7. Can you use Segoe UI or Calibri?

Readability is awkward with the keywords and such on the left with such a narrow page column. If you have stuff on the left, there should be a balance of stuff on the right too, otherwise navigation would look better on the right, or you might want to try a proportional sizing option (one that scales the width of content column to the width of the window). If you use a proportional option, you might want to try it with the navigation pane on the far left of the window so that the content doesn't start so close to the center of the window like it does now.

It's my understanding that touchscreens have to have a glass surface that is above the LCD panel (which has a softer layer). So how do you have an additional glass layer above the LCD that isn't glarey, since non-glare glass would be cloudy and would make the LCD blurry to read? Also, Christopher Dawson keeps going on about the "benefits of free and open source software" (including Linux), and yet he has himself extolled the virtues of clinging to Windows because Linux won't do what he wants it to, and that education boards use Microsoft software, and that is somehow wrong, and yet they are teaching students to use software that Corporate America uses. Really?!? Is this guy for real? When I went to school, they taught skills that employers were actually looking for - and that was primarily Microsoft Office and such. They didn't care that schools were teaching Wordperfect, because those same companies had already migrated to Office and they wanted Office skills because re-training costs the company money. So I ask again: what good is teaching some kids Linux skills when employers aren't looking for that? Is that really worth spending taxpayer and tuition dollars on education for skills that employers don't care about?

Nice, but please widen the main reading panel.

A change is as good as a holiday. Text a little small. It would look better with a nicer font say verdana size 10.

I like the formatting changes but the pic at the top seems out of place in scale and with the color scheme. My 2c.

"Doom and gloom for Windows Phone? Not according to Morgan Stanley, which says Microsoft will achieve 15 percent of the smart phone market by 2012"

Falsifiable, and probably will be falsified. Sounds like delicious future claim chowder.

I agree with Waethorn that the readability of the new format is poor. Reduce or eliminate the enormous black borders.

I feel for you, Paul...not an easy blog system to work with and customize. Keep up the good work. :)

Where did that last little bit come from?  I wasn't watching left field and almost got hit.  I can tell you, positively and without hesitation, that Microsoft is not routinely "giving away" BPOS or other online services with all new EAs.  I would be surprised if Account Managers from MS were not trying to get it on every EA...but doing it "whether you want it or not" and "at no additional cost" is not accurate.  I know that nobody will just trust me on this...but do some follow-up research and you'll see that this is not the case.

I gotta admit that I'm not too crazy about this layout. The readability for me has gone down dramatically. I think it's the fonts.

I do like the new daily blogging style but the font could be just a point or two bigger. Otherwise, love the change up.

Paul, the font size is too small for me.
I wonder how long you're going to write egregious things about the innovative iPad, and by extention, imply that consumers of it are stupid?
