The feedback Microsoft wants on the Windows 7 RC is...

... the following:

  • Issues that prevent installation or upgrade
  • Any issues that involve corruption or data loss
  • Security issues
  • Regressions from Windows Vista SP1 or Windows 7 Beta (things worked before, but do not work now)
  • Any application or device issues that would prevent you from using Windows 7 as your primary OS.
  • Reproducible crashes or hangs (issues that you cannot reproduce will be captured by CEIP Telemetry)

I had mentioned previously that Microsoft removed the obvious feedback tools from the Windows 7. You can provide feedback by running the following command from a command line:

rundll32.exe FeedbackTool.dll,ShowWizard

Anyways, on some games I play via Steam I have seen some definite slowdowns in the windows 7 beta. And it seems to just be the old games like Deus Ex etc. It doesn't happen in Vista, but could it be from the debug code in the beta?

It's May 1. Paul's prediction that Windows 7 would ship in April was wrong.

robertsjoe: It's April 30. And it wasn't a prediction.

What's the deal with the development cycle for Windows 7? What is Microsoft's system for getting bugfixes migrated into the alternate build trees? What are the advantages to breaking it apart, aside from getting code ready for public release early? (Is there any advantage other than being a PR helper?) If the RTM is supposed to be based off the RC, why break the build tree off early and create an alternate path for the RTM?

Are they prioritizing bug reports via the automatic problem reporting functionality or do they still prefer people to use the manual feedback tool?

Paul: Let see here: http://community.winsupersite.com/blogs/paul/archive/2008/12/05/when-wil... It says that "My Prediction: April 2009". "My prediction" would mean that you, Paul Thurrott, predicts that "When will Windows 7 ship", will be in April 2009. I don't know how else you can spin something as clear as that. True, it's May 1 where I am. So you have less than 24 hours where you are for your prediction, that Windows 7 will ship in April 2009, to come to fruition. Lets see if that happens. Not that it's a big deal. But predictions are a punter's game. Just admit it was incorrect. ;)

I do not know why you guys are having a go at Paul, no one else had gotten anywhere near what Paul had said for the RC date. I for one am very happy at the moment and look forward to its RTM which I think will be fairly soon in August.

Paul, The RC was built on 04/21/2009. For the most part, the RC is on MSDN and TechNet on April, 30th. That means the OS is shipping its near final version to industry partners and professionals. That sounds like its shipping to me. The consumer version always goes out later than the business and industry. Deadline met. Good job there, Paul. I'm glad they are narrowing the focus to issues that prevents a successful launch. I'm glad thats where we're at and I can't wait for May 5th!

Well, so far - i've got NOTHING to report to MS regarding RC. And that's a GOOD thing! Oh, I do have one.. All possible audio/video formats run just fine - except mkv. Now, I have just like 10 of those, but it really pops out when everything else plays so nice :)
Dr. Tone
on May 1, 2009
I got mkvs going last night. You need to install a splitter. Haali works just fine and there is a version of his installer that includes both x86 and x64 versions.
