The Netflix Player

While I'm not sure the world was asking for Yet Another Set Top Box (YAST, trademark is patent-pending), this should be of interest to Netflix customers at least:

The Netflix Player makes it easy to instantly watch movies and TV episodes over the Internet on your living room TV, or anywhere you have a TV and an Internet connection. Compact and lightweight, inexpensive but powerful, simple to set up and use (it’s the perfect answer for people who just can’t get enough Netflix).

Choose Movies on Your TV

Movies and TV episodes in your Netflix Instant Queue appear right on your TV screen. Use the included remote control to browse through the items you’ve added to your Instant Queue and pick something to watch — whenever you want. You can even read descriptions and rate movies, right from the comfort of your couch.

Universal Compatibility

Whatever kind of TV you have, the Netflix Player is guaranteed to work with it. Connect to the latest HDTV or one that you’ve had for years. With standard RCA jacks, S-video, component video, HDMI, and optical audio, the Player will work with virtually any TV, AV receiver, or home theater system.

Unlimited Entertainment

The Netflix Player lets you explore even more possibilities from the world’s largest online movie rental service. Access a growing library of over 10,000 instant movies and TV episodes. Watch as many as you like, as often as you want—with no additional fees. You’re in control with the power to play anytime and finish watching whenever you like.

Looks like its $99 plus an active Netflix membership. More important, perhaps, it has HDMI support as well as older connectors, but doesn't yet support the streaming or downloading of HD content: In fact, the quality is based on your Internet connection speed, which is interesting. Netflix says there are currently over 10,000 movies and TV episodes available to watch with more being added every week.

Wow--gotta say, that has me interested. To be able to have the Netflix library at my fingertips anytime, without the need for shipping--very cool. I certainly don't mind if it's not HD content yet. It's probably akin to watching a TiVo-recorded show or movie. That's enough to make a guy consider dropping cable.

Now this is news. Paul get one and review it....like yesterday. This will kill Apple TV if they get HD and new release DVD rentals are on this system at the same time. Huge news. I have blockbuster online only because the stores are close by. I have said to my wife for a while, now....the first vendor to come up with a good monthly online plan...and I am moving. Apple TV needs a monthly subscription. Negatives are no HD right now and that bandwidth deal smells fishy. I have 6 meg down so according to the FAQ I should get DVD quality. What is the requirement for HD when it comes out? What if their server is hammered even though I have 6meg down will it send me VHS quality? It needs some testing/review.

Exactly - why another set top box? You can do this on an Media Center Extender (including XBox 360) with this Media Center Add-In: vmcNetflix. Link: http://myweb.cableone.net/eluttmann04/projects/vmcNetFlix/default.htm

Note to the folks here: This only works with the stuff you can already stream to your web browser...not much of that is current. Hey Paul...how about an entry about those NPD numbers? 360 barely beat the PS3...and got walloped by the Wii...again.

It seems odd that you have to go to third parties to do the same thing on your Windows Media Center PC. Although 3rd party solutions (Anthony Park's My Netflix) are actually really, really good Microsoft really ought to be help Netflix develop an official Media Center app that does the same thing.

Woow this is good news !! An all you can eat solution that streams to you TV is great. Plus Netflix has the best selection of titles available among competitors. It's too bad it's gonna add yet another box in the living room though... I'd have prefered a plugin architecture for Frontrow/Xbox360/MediaCenter. I can't wait to see the first reviews of image quality also. Anything below DVD quality would be a deal breaker. I would expect 720p though.

You can already do this with the Xbox 360 through a Media Center app. The quality is pretty good considering.

I've used their on line "viewing" and watched the first season of MI-5. Not bad. Video quality was not great but good enough, sound was good. I think the issue is that people will have an issue with YAST as we are staring to run out of connections to the old HDTV. But 99 more bucks, I don't know. I think it's smart move for them, they seem to anticipate well in terms of predicting practical market changes and planning ahead, but not pulling the trigger too soon. I've been a customer for years and all that's happened is my rates keep going down. They seem to be a smart bunch.

UPDATE: Whoa, I actually read the blurb on the website: HDMI to the HDTV AND wireless. 99 bucks. I'm in. Oh, and this just in, Leo likes it. Looks like a two-handed reverse slam dunk

I bought one. Since Vista SP1 broke the Netflix Watch-it-now, I can't watch movies on my PC. This does sound like a good deal; let's hope they increase their movie library. Right now it's like iTunes was in its early days.
