US video game sales, March 2008

I mentioned NPD's data for video game sales in Short Takes this morning, but I wanted to piece together something a little more comprehensive. This required me to scan a number of news story about the data, as none of them supplied all of it. Here's what I came up with.

The market
NPD's data covers the US market only.

The comparisons
As always, growth comparisons are year-over-year (i.e. with March 2007 in this case).

Total sales
The video game industry generated $1.7 billion in revenues, up 57 percent.

Hardware sales
Overall, hardware sales grew 46 percent, to $377.9 million, from $551.3 million. Note that game accessories accounted for $220 million, up 58 percent.

Top selling video game hardware
1. Nintendo Wii - 721,000 units (Biggest non-holiday Wii sales month yet)
2. Nintendo DS - 698,000 units
3. Sony PSP - 297,000 units
4. Microsoft Xbox 360 - 262,000 units
5. Sony PlayStation 3 - 257,000 units (Double the number from a year earlier)
6. Sony PlayStation 2 - 216,000 units

Top selling video game accessories
1. Xbox Live points and subscription cards
2. PlayStation 3 wireless controller

Software sales
Overall, video game software sales grew 63 percent to $945.6 million.

Top selling video game titles
1. Super Smash Bros: Brawl (Wii) - 2.7 million units
2. Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 (Xbox 360) - 752,300 units
3. Army of Two (Xbox 360) - 606,100 units
4. Wii Play (Wii) - 409,000 units
5. God of War: Chains of Olympus (PSP) - 301,600 units
6. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Wii) - 264,000 units
7. MLB 2K8 (Xbox 360) - 237,100 units
8. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Xbox 360) - 237,000 units
9. Army of Two (PS3) - 224,900 units

People who should know better
MarketWatch actually compared Wii sales in March to those in February, which is a no-no: Comparing month over month sales is pointless and confusing. (But they "surged" by more than 65 percent if you're curious.)

A few meaningful statistics
One meaningful statistic, however, is how well the Wii is doing: Its 721,000 in unit sales in March was more than the sales of the Xbox 360 and PS3 combined. Take that, Microsoft and Sony.

Nintendo controlled 58 percent of the game hardware market in March.

PS3 software sales are up 139 percent year over year. That said, only a single PS3 title made the top 10, so PS3 software sales were obviously pretty dire a year ago.

The Sony PlayStation 2 is no longer outselling its current-generation cousins.

The Xbox 360's software title attach rate was 7.5, the highest-ever for the industry.

The Nintendo DS has now sold over 19 million units in the US since its November 2004 launch.

Looking ahead
While I'm not sure any of the above numbers have any particular meaning, I would point out two events that should keep video game sales going strong for the next month or so. First, Grand Theft Auto is shipping for multiple platforms in late April and should be one of the best-selling games of the year. Also, PS3 users can look forward to Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and Metal Gear Solid 4.

Also the release of Mario Kart Wii will push a lot more Wii systems. Perhaps Wii Fit too. Why are people still buying the PS2? Sliding or not, Sony is making coin off of three systems.

What? No mention that the PSP is outselling it's larger counterparts from both the current, and previous generation? I wonder what the previous sales were like without the surge from the new God of War game....

"Why are people still buying the PS2? Sliding or not, Sony is making coin off of three systems." Mainly because the PS2 has a much larger (and cheaper) game library than the PS3, and new PS3's no longer have backward compatibility with it anymore. The PS3 80GB software PS2 emulation is weak at best, and the 40GB lacks it altogether, while Sony has said publicly not to expect any future backwards compatibility at all. This is to reduce the cost (read: Sony's losses) to produce the PS3. The 80GB has been pulled from the Sony Canada website, and many retailers are not offering backorders on it.

Oh, and the 'Wii is a fad' phrase should never be uttered again. http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/xbox360_how_to_choose.asp >>In short, I'm not all that impressed with the Wii at all, and though I respect Nintendo for thinking differently and trying to make the device more about game play than raw specifications, it's also succeeded in making something that is so singularly uninteresting that it's an also-ran in my book, and certainly with my own family. Tellingly, it's the only next-generation console we're going to get rid of. It's just not that compelling over time. --- As for the Wii, I'm going to have to disagree with the consensus and call it as I see it: Unless you have very young kids with no video game experience at all, skip out on this console. The Wii is a joke, a novelty console that doesn't offer much staying power. Either the 360 or PS3 would be a better choice for almost anyone. << http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/xbox360_how_to_choose.asp

>>Needless to say, the Nintendo fan boys have come racing out of Mario's castle like those flying monkeys in "The Wizard of Oz." But nothing--not even its surprisingly strong sales--can sugarcoat the fact that the Wii is a joke.<< http://www.internet-nexus.com/2007/04/choosing-video-game-system.htm

Try GTA will be one of the best selling games of all time. I am not particularly interested in it, but from what I hear the title is expected to beat Halo 3's first week sales which is saying something.

I am no longer a gamer [FPS fanboy] by any measure, but I tried the Wii and have adult friends that have also. We all got bored, although a few golfers were intrigued a little longer. I have one word to say...DOOM!

As some of the jedi knights would say, Hard to see the future is, always in motion. However, the Wii was a mega hit beyond what everyone expected. However, its still up in the air how long Nintendo can keep this going as Sony plans their own motion controller and so is Microsoft. Also, Microsoft and Sony are both working on ways to make games more general audience specific. I bet we're not getting the hit titles from these guys because they are in re-vamp mode to better challenge Wii. I'm sure as they finish the analysis and change the games emphasis, Nintendo should be worried.

"Why are people still buying the PS2? " I bought mine because it was dirt cheap, I don't have HD so there's no point in an overpriced PS3, and the secondhand last-generation XBox* I bought at the same time is still more reliable (and much less expensive) than the new one. Price, price, price. That and the huge installed base of PS2 games--certainly more than I can play in a lifetime--made the PS2 a no-brainer for me. * Yes, I bought an XBox. Waethorn, you may pick yourself up off the floor now.

Ocean: I think the Wii is a joke, sorry. It's clearly outselling the other consoles by a wide margin. But then, popularity has little do with quality. [Cue random Mac bigot pointing out something about Windows at this point.]

"Cue random Mac bigot pointing out something about Windows at this point." Alternately, one could point to the popularity of this site. *rimshot* (Relax, it's a joke)

"Alternately, one could point to the popularity of this site." ....or the fact that you just proved his point. (and yours)
