Use Office 2010 to Map a Drive Letter to SkyDrive

Download Squad has some simple instructions for using Office 2010 (beta or final) to easily map a network drive to your 25 GB of free SkyDrive storage. I usually use a third-party tool like SDExplorer or Gladinet for this, but this is probably even easier.

Here's what you'll need to to turn your SkyDrive into your Z: drive (or whatever letter you choose):

  • Office 2010 -- a trial version or unexpired beta is fine
  • a Windows Live account
  • ...the ability to follow directions
That's about it. Let's go!

Thanks to everyone who's forwarded me this link. I was hoping to save this for the Windows 7 Tip of the Week next week on Windows Weekly, but it's pretty clear I can't wait that long.

Hmm, I don't appear to have option to map my SkyDrive with Office.

It just keeps asking for my password over and over but won't actually map the drive.

Thanks, this is a great tip and a bit better than the previous solutions.

Great tip, Paul!

Just one thing missing on their page of instructions.  They don't mention that once you install that app to link your Windows Live ID to your PC login, that you have to perform the actual linking in User Accounts.  It wasn't intuitive, but the screenshot they used was a good clue.

Great stuff! Thanks for passing this along. My only complaint is that the network drive is associated with just one folder -- it would be much more useful if it worked with your entire SkyDrive "disk" at once. So, since I don't need to save anything directly to SkyDrive, I'll just keep using SDExplorer.

Also, check this out for a way to do it without Office 2010:
