What's Vista really like on a new PC?

I read a lot of crazy stuff about Windows Vista, most of it negative. Sure, I've had issues with Vista too, of course, but I've never found the OS to be any more problematic than previous Windows versions, and it's certainly got its share of improvements over XP. But this morning, something popped into my head: Exactly one week ago, I purchased an HP Tablet PC so I could update a few mobility-oriented chapters for the revision to "Windows Vista Secrets." And in that time, I've done what I always do when I install Vista for the first time on a machine (or, in this case, just get Vista preinstalled on a new PC): I installed all my applications and just used the machine on a daily basis. I wondered, what has Vista's reliability been like in this first week?

Well, wonder no more. Here's what the Reliability Monitor shows for this machine's first week of life: Perfect 10's across the board.

That's right: It had no problems at all. No hiccups. No crashes. No blue screens. No weirdness coming out of sleep. No troubles at all. The little yellow triangle you see there? That's the day I installed all my applications (and removed some crapware): It's a string of text that reads "success" a mile long.

I realize that one PC does not an OS success story make. I urge you to understand, however, that the reverse is also true, and that any customer service expert will tell you that you tend to hear 10 times as many complaints as you do accolades. My experience with Vista has been great. My experience with Vista on a new PC, however, has been perfect.

These are very good points, and the truth of the matter is that the blogging community has been overly negative about vista based on early driver issues for the most part. When in fact, like I have said before, your average consumer has no such complaints and uses vista day to day with very few issues, and none that justify the bad name vista now has.

I haven't had any problem with Vista either, yes ok, few hiccups, mainly due to the infamous StandBy/Sleep function on older machines. I bought an HP pavillion laptop with Vista preinstalled and it works wonders, I have also installed Vista on a new self assebled pc, which I use mainly for games, and is absolutely fine, performance in games is on par with XP on the same machine. Vista, also, drives my media center and I have no complains about that either. I would say, as long as you use up-to-date hardware Vista is definately the way to go. Mostly, the negative feedback about vista is due to sites trying to grasp some traffic. Some bloggers are making a living out of bashing MS Vista.

The only problem why my rating is not perfect is because firefox crashes regularly in site apollo.lv and because of a few amateur software. otherwise vista is rock stable for me. since i got it running on decent computer, i never looked back to xp.

Yeah, the Vista bashing stuff has got to be the easiest and most transparent attempt to draw hits I've ever seen. (Vista is the Brittney Spears of the tech world? Ugh.) As is so often the case in life, the truth is so much less controversial.

I have a 4.0 rating because one of the 2: Firefox or YahooMessenger 9 beta keeps crashing almost every day. Also I must say that I had Vista crash once because of the Adobe reader plugin for Firefox that stopped working and when I killed the program it killed Vista too. Bummer.

The negative media around Vista has been staggering, to say the least. Vista hasn't been perfect, for sure, but my personal experience has been really great! It's stable, fast, and fun-to-use. Meanwhile, I've been rolling out Vista at work and to family members. I was really waiting for a lot of tech support requests, but they've been (surprisingly) almost nil. Microsoft really needs to wrangle in this "negative media" and get Vista back on track...

Gee, one would hope after a YEAR on the market, and buying a BRAND NEW machine the product would actually work. Yes I'm glad Vista is maturing, I think it is a real improvement over XP, but it is a bit sad that a full year after introduction it is only being installed on about half of all NEW computers. Yeah, but that says a lot about the power of negativity. It's interesting to me that no one questions that Vista is junk, but if someone claims it just works, they're clearly a tool.

There's really no proof being offered here that Vista's poor reception is undeserved. It's Paul and a a few other geeks' anecdotes (it works for me) versus other people's anecdotes (plenty of real people have reported being unhappy with Vista, plenty). It's hard to say how it happened, but the bottom line is that Vista now is saddled with a bad reputation. Hence all the talk about Windows 7.

You left out the specs of the tablet. CPU, RAM, graphics? Most normal users don't like to spend over $1000 on a computer because it is just that a computer.

I will be installing Vista on my mac Pro Tower next week and give you all an update. It's a 3GHz Quad core with 4GB RAM amd RAID 0 with 2 500GB WD drives as well as two more for backup and experimenting. Got the ATI 1900XT vid card. Can't wait to test drive. BTW, my two 6 yrs olds and my 7 yr old [it's tough being catholic] have a new favorite toy...MS Office 2007. They will not stop with the clipart. What a great investment!

I meant to post this here: All new OSes have problems. People complain about Vista drivers, but do you remember needing to boot in MacOS 'Classic' for soem apps to work, or not work? The driver and software for my scanner did not get an OS X version for months, and my Apple Laser Writer just never worked in OS X. Drivers for Vista are coming slong and all computers have hardware disasters. These happen with any OS and hardware. People should not complain about Vista as it all happen with Macs as well...even to average users.

" Sure, I've had issues with Vista too, of course, but I've never found the OS to be any more problematic than previous Windows versions" That is /not/ a good endorsement. But you're right, it's a heavily plagued by problems as any previous version of Windows. Microsoft Windows Vista, nothing's changed. (tm)
