Why Does Flash Never Work in IE 9??

Anyone else seeing this?

You install Internet Explorer 9, get everything up and running, and it's all working fine, including Flash video. And then, inexplicably, Flash just stops working. You see a message on YouTube and other sites that, "You need to upgrade your Flash Player to watch this video." So you click the link to download it from Adobe, close down IE and whatever else (Windows Live Messenger, etc.) that it asks for, install the thing and restart IE.

And Flash still doesn't work.

Anyone? Bueller?

When I was using the Beta and RC, I remember Flash failing to update. So I went to Adobe's site and was told I needed a beta version of Flash to work with IE 9.

I havn't seen this problem with the RTM version. So far, no Flash crashes.

1. Make sure all your programs that use Flash are closed when you uninstall it. Use the Adobe uninstaller from:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html

2.Restart the computer.

3.Navigate to:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash
and delete any remaining files in that folder.

4. Download a fresh installer for Flash and install.

5. Voilà?

no problems to report here. I keep ActiveXFiltering/TrackingProtection turned on usually, but disable them selectively as the need comes, and in the instances where I need to enable flash for a site, it has worked just fine.

Paul,

It may be just a long shot, but do you have the ActiveX filtering enabled? This may stop Flash from loading.

Thanks everyone.

And ... ActiveX Filtering. :) Ah hah!

I saw this problem in the RC version (IE9 64-bit on W7 64-bit). I never actually found a fix other than restarting the browser.

I had this same problem on a couple machines I upgraded. If you're running 64-bit Windows, sometimes it gets messed up and all the icons run the 64-bit version of IE which you probably don't have 64-bit plugin versions for.

Double-check your IE icon properties and verify that they wre pointed to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe.

You can also verify by looking in task manager. If IE's process is listed as iexplore.exe *32 then it's the correct version.

I had this problem when using the RC, and it was caused because the 64-bit version kept opening instead of the (supposed to be) default 32-bit. If it happens again, click Tools > About Internet Explorer and see if the 64-bit version is running.

what I find even more odd, Silverlight isn't working for me. I have it installed but when in apphub and I click submit an app, it tells me to install silverlight, I go through the motions and download it but the installer tells me it is already installed...

It's just as JesseC says. The 64bit version is being setup as the version that runs in all the shortcuts. I saw this same issue on the RC.

I have had this problem since installing the RC. It doesn't happen on every site. Youtube works fine. I get the upgrade message on Al Jazeera even thought flash works on their site.

More maddening are some other sites that are balky.

And, yes, I am running the 32 bit verstion. Just checked.

One possible thing to check are the Flash Global Settings you can get to through right clicking on the video. I had set them very tight, e.g. not letting it store files on my pc, but found that loosening things up helped fix some problems, but not all.

More on IE9 quirkiness.. Have any of you tried IE9 with Microsoft's recently update site (www.microsoft.com)? Compared to the latest version of Chrome it is noticeably herky-jerky with the full page sliding animations. Chrome by comparison is buttery smooth. I've confirmed my PC is using hardware GPU rendering. Its a shame really, I do like the new version otherwise.. but things like this make it only good enough to be my second choice.
