Windows 7 Beta Network Performance

David Travis posts some interesting Windows 7 network file copy performance results. You may recall that I had noticed some issues with network file copies myself, and Microsoft was curious about this. In my case, the copies were all to Windows Home Server, which is based on Windows Server 2003. And sure enough, David expresses surprise about how poorly Windows 7 works with this server version as well.

One of my major complaints about Vista has been the network performance problems, or at least what seemed to be network performance problems. I worked with a couple of guys at work on testing network performance with XP, Vista and Windows 7 Beta.

I used a Windows 2003 Server and a Windows 2008 Server for testing.

I was shocked by the performance of Windows 7 downloading from Windows 2003 server. I hope that Microsoft works on this. Remember that this is a Beta and we will have to wait until RTM to determine the real performance. I am very impressed with the performance of Windows 7 and Windows 2008 server. Hopefully this does not change in the RTM.

Check out the full post for details on the test script and the full results chart.

Forbes already has an article about how Jobs is bigger than Gates. I don't think Gates even cares anymore. Weird article and curious timing. http://www.forbes.com/technology/2009/01/14/steve-jobs-legacy-tech-perso...

"Weird article and curious timing." Accurate article and perfect timing. A nice balance to the WinJihadists who refer to Jobs as "Skeletor in a beatnik costume".

"Lotsa phrased his attack in the form of a question so in his bizarro-Jeopardy world, it's not an attack." Of course. He never lets facts get in the way of his ability to make a complete a$$ of himself.

Well, that article's absolutely a great example of reporting in the Lyons' "the other kind who suck up in order to get access and end up getting played and punked" category. Did you know the personal computer really only started with the Macintosh? I didn't. I wonder what I'd been doing in the personal computer business for eight years before that. I wonder what Apple had been doing in the personal computer business for seven year before that. I really wonder who Microsoft had been selling personal computer software to for nine years before that. Well, that gives the tone of the "let's rewrite the world according to Steve Jobs and maybe Apple will give us good seats at a keynote" article. I did, however, find it interesting that they compared Steve Jobs to Thomas Edison. For anybody who has any knowledge of Edison beyond the elementary school "My First Biography" level, it's actually a pretty accurate comparison. I have to wonder whether the author really knows that little about Edison or really does understand Edison and used that as a way to let a little truth into a puff piece while hoping nobody at Apple would notice.

"lotsa, haven't you called Steve Jobs Skeletor before? I think you have." Then he's a "WinJihadist". I refuse to be associated with him. I'm an iPundit. @losta: get a life. it's cancer. get over it.

dip: Indeed I have. I even suggested that someone should "feed that boy a cheeseburger". But at this point (my instincts force me to actually agree with Wae that the guy's probably dying), it's just beyond the pale to pile on the insults. I figured the skinniness was just a byproduct of his ridiculous vegetarian diet. I was wrong. I wouldn't kick a man while he's down (although I might make an exception for a certain smarmy Canadian).

I think that Steve as a pancreatic pseudocyst. Heck, I could drain it for him and have him back to work in a day or two. Throw in a PICC line and give him some nutrients and he'll be back in the director's chair ASAP. He's probably lost too much weight and muscle mass to bounce back quickly. I hope it delays the iPhone nano with a pay as you go data plan until my wife is eligible for the upgrade;)

"There are no consumers right now that want to buy a $3000 laptop." How would you put it, "waethorn"? Oh yeah...WRONG! "It was buried at the bottom of the Computerworld report on fourth-quarter PC sales posted at Macworld.com earlier on Thursday, but early signs point to Apple having a pretty good end to 2008. The report, which focuses on a preliminary estimate of fourth-quarter sales by market-research firm Gartner, paints a grim overall picture of the PC market, with year-over-year revenue tumbling from 2007’s numbers and netbooks cannibalizing sales of other machines. "Not so for Apple, however. The same Gartner report estimates that Apple’s U.S. shipments rose 6.7 percent over the same period in 2007; that was good enough to give the company an 8 percent share of the U.S. market."

And in between which lines in that report does it say that people are picking up the 17" Macbook Pro in droves??! More anecdotal evidence from the king of spin. Just goes to show you that Americans are a bit slow.
