Windows 8

With Windows 7 barreling towards its last major pre-release milestone, Release Candidate (RC), and ready for a Q3 2009 RTM (release to manufacturing), it's obviously time to turn our attention to Windows 8. Yes, Virginia, there will be a Windows 8, despite the weird, droning opinions out there that's there's nothing left to do on the PC client. (You must be spending too much time wondering why Apple can't release its not-upgrade, Snow Leopard, in a reasonable amount of time, or for free.)

We've known that there'd be a Windows 8 for some time, of course. But this week's mention of Windows 8, explicitly, by Windows user experience guru Julie Larson-Green, has touched off some attempts to figure out what might be going on with this next-next Windows version.

Mary Jo Foley offers up the following, and it's been parroted on virtually every Windows blog on earth, so I better hurry up and post this:

Microsoft is starting to hire developers specifically for Windows 8 ... A Microsoft job posting from April 14 seeks someone to help with the next generation of the Distributed File System Replication (DFSR) storage technology inside the next version of Windows.

That's server technology, so we can assume this is for Windows 8 Server, the major release follow-up to Windows Server 2008 R2, due late this year.

There’s another Windows 8 job posting from April 16 that [also] focuses on Windows 8 Server (a k a Windows Server 2011 or whatever it ends up being called). It’s for another job focused on the Windows file system.

Put simply, we don't really know anything about Windows 8 yet (i.e. the client version of Windows 8). But it's always fun to speculate. :)

OMG Paul! Jesus effin' Christ man, can't you leave Apple alone for one stinking post? They are not behind on 10.6, they are still well within the loosely stated timeframe of "about a year" from last years WWDC. There has been NO pricing information given, and it most certainly will be an upgrade. You take the cake, dude, really. What a douche bag thing to say.

WTF "(You must be spending too much time wondering why Apple can't release its not-upgrade, Snow Leopard, in a reasonable amount of time, or for free.)" Why do you need this bit Paul? All it does is take away from you and the rest of the post, you truly are a Microsoft fangirl.

BEGINTRANSMIT Enough with idle speculation. This conversation has been halted, by order of the Galactic Council! Instead, we will discuss the topic of your carbon-entity Waethorn, and his refusal to leave the underground dwelling of his mother. Recently she has applied on his behalf to the processed-nutrient manufacturer you refer to as "Arby's," and we are happy to report that they are interested in acquiring his talents in a bulk-frying capacity! Waethorn, we implore you to accept this opportunity. We do not sell you into slavery to the Arby's Corporation lightly. Perhaps this measure will help build character, remove you from both the basement and internet chatrooms, and give you the much-needed cash to start your own domestic abode. Please, my adopted son, accept this position! You listen in on your mother and I performing the mating ritual, and it creeps the symbiont parasites out of us. You leave peanut butter in the jelly jar. You leave anti-Apple graffiti on the walls. How can we properly raise our new Starbaby with such domestic tension abound? As Yzwutheius the Truthspeaker said when disintegrating the worlds of Xarn, "sometimes you just gotta do it." It is time to move out and become a cog in the primitive economic market society that drives your planet in fits and starts towards the distant goal of singularity. And that path begins with an Arby's nametag. ENDTRANSMIT

You really are a tool, Thurrott. You're the one that called Vista a "minor upgrade", and you were right. It's Vista 2.5. Not that there's anything wrong with that; certainly Microsoft could use the refresh after all the bad publicity surrounding the PR disaster that is Vista. And Apple's next update will be minor as well—as Apple has already indicated. The thing is, one has NOTHING to do with the other. But you just can't stop yourself from inserting another smart-a$$ Apple comment in nearly every post, can you? Your obsession is almost pathological. Seriously, dude, seek some professional help before it's too late. "danieldecker" was wrong in comparing your comments to a douche bag, though. Doing so is an insult to the douche bag.

I actually enjoy a lot Paul's punches at Apple and the mac fanatics. It's refreshing from what's out there. Like this: http://i.gizmodo.com/5220277/cnbc-is-ridiculous-macs-come-with-photoshop...

"Take a look in the mirror. Who are the people that get incredibly worked up over things a "tool" writes on his blog..." I definitely should have just kept swimming past his bait, but honestly...the man is obsessed. It's as sad as it is funny to watch.

"(You must be spending too much time wondering why Apple can't release its not-upgrade, Snow Leopard, in a reasonable amount of time, or for free.)" No, I was thinking that it's good they're working on the next Vista SP (which they call Windows 8) now that they're nearing completion of the current Vista SP (called Windows 7). Odd that Microsoft charges so much for these service packs and gives them such weird names.

Oh relax guys. Let's face it - this is an entirely content-free post: "NEWS FLASH: Microsoft will NOT stop developing Windows after 2009. Stay tuned for details!" So he throws in a little gratuitous dig at Apple to fan the flames a little and get the comments flowing. And you guys take the bait. Every time. And then the usual suspects get to jump in and call you "crazed" and "hysterical." It's all a bit predictable, really.

stevejobs, I thought you had an SL? And while the comment was gratuitous, as I've said multiple times, and as WebGuy just said, you guys all take the bait, each and every time, providing him more incentive to continue doing it, and proving time and time again his own feelings that he expressed in his thin-skinned Mac fans post. So while Paul has been known to fly off the handle many times, you guys need to look at your own behavior as well, it is as WebGuy says, utterly predictable.

Dipsh, you're right. My response was predictable and cloying. I'm going to now take advantage of this crossroads to do something no one expected. I'm growing one of them curly mustaches, the ones you have to wax. I'm going to bring them back. Even the Mac OS smiley logo will sport a handlebar mustache. It's going to be big. Handlebar mustaches are the new black.

It's always amusing to watch Microsoft worshippers spar with Apple fan boys. Hey, and Linux geeks get into the mix now and then too which really pumps up the entertainment factor. But this is a blog so these subjective judgments are just fine and part of the territory. What really bugs me is when a journalist reporting on Apple, Microsoft, Open Source systems, and others can not help but take non productive pot shots at the "other" company. In other words, the company that produces a product that they have decided they do not like. It is non productive and poor journalism. Thus, the Mac observer, the Supersite, and Linux fans might want to consider objective and productive reporting instead of personal opinion. But again, this is a blog and sometimes we all need this kind of immature banter. Keeps the blood running hot anyway...

Hi, I'm Gus Caruthers, assistant manager at Arby's. Waethorn, I'm disappointed that you didn't show up for your interview this morning. Your mom tells me you're a good kid, a bit misguided and shy, but decent and hard-working Look, it may not be glamorous, but we have a lot to offer. Paid time off, benefits, and an excellent opportunity for advancement. Just eight years ago I was working the fry vat myself, and now I pull in over $14k Canadian each year! You could be me someday! Sigh. Live and learn, kid. This whole white-box sales thing you've got going on in your mom's basement may seem good enough for now, but you need to think about your future! The processed faux-roast beef market is set to take off over the next few years, and this is your chance to get in on the ground floor! I was once like you. I was bitter and jaded- your typical emo teen. My life lacked purpose and meaning. So I shipped off to fight in the first Gulf War, and came back missing my testes. I was alone and adrift in the world, until I signed up at Arby's. Now I'm pulling in five figures, and drive a used '94 Saturn with much of its original paint. Take a moment and at least consider my offer, Waethorn. It's a future of positive career-enhancing experience that might let you earn enough to move out on your own, or a life of crime, starting knife-fights with other kids for wearing different-colored jackets. What's it going to be? If you need me, I'll be at the drive-thru window. Ready to take your life's order.

Look, I'd just like to know which of you punks stopped up the toilets at Arby's today. It took poor Casey a half hour to unclog them and then he had to clean up the mess. Meanwhile, our customers had to go over to the Tim Horton's across the street. Please, people. I don't care what type of computer you use, I have a business to run. Waethorn, tell your little friends to take their horseplay somewhere else.

Meeeooooww! Catfight - again! Speaking of which. I saw to cats getting it on today by the parking lot (that time of year). The she-cat was screaming real bad. Didn't really want in on it I s'pose. My kids (4 and 6) watched in horror, thinking that the cat on top was killing the other one. Didn't know how break the news so I remained silent. Also didn't want the kids to connect the angusihed cat scream with any sounds they might hear their mother make if they caught us at an appropriate occasion. That's about as relevant to this thread as all other posts. This is LunarStorm level (Swedish social site where young teens harass each other, I guess you have the equivalent.)
