Windows Mobile 6.5 revealed? Update: Nope, they’re fake

Update: I’m told these are most probably fake. Oh well: I do think the Zune UI would be a good fit for Windows Mobile.

Smartpone France has some interesting photos that appear to show off the UI for Windows Mobile 6.5, Microsoft’s new stop-gap release between today’s Windows Mobile and what I hope will be a completely new mobile OS based on Windows 7. We can only dream. In the meantime, I’m surprised no one noticed that the shot on the right is clearly based on the Zune device UI…

Thanks to Sebastian V. for the tip. For the record, the Zune UI is a wonderful idea for Windows Mobile, and it’s proven to work well on this small form factor screen type.

Looks fake to me. Why would MS put a separate item for Youtube?

It's likely fake because of the alternate positions of the battery icon in both photos, but it would be so cool if it was real. With all of the shells being made for Win Mobile, I'm sure someone will replicate this at some point.

The today (Home), camera (iPhoto) and music (FrontRow) icons are all from OSX so I think its fake.

Yeah these were outed as zune inspired fakes yesterday.

The most obvious giveaway was that the Windows logo on the left pic is completely mangled by a hackneyed copy & paste job.

Paul i don't agree with the zune UI being a good thing for windows mobile phones. Like Wathorn said in the other blog post we need a UI that has everything we need to know upfront one click away. Email, text, voice mail, miss calls, calendar events. These new UIs look pretty but they take all of that away. If the new UI looks like that I hope that a home screen is one of the stops.

Well, if you think about the way the alternative new home page in Windows Mobile 6.1 works (I think it's called Panels, can't remember), it's much like the Zune in that you can navigate up and down but also left and right. I think it works quite well actually, and prefer it to the default home screen by a wide margin.

For people using their WM device primarily as a phone, I'd definately agree with Paul about the new WM 6.1 panel interface. I had a non-technical relative hold off on buying a new phone until their carrier upgraded their Windows Mobile Standard devices from 6.0 to 6.1 specifically for that feature. (Note that it is ONLY on standard and the UI changes from 6.0 to 6.1 on Pro are not that significant)

Paul Sorry I guess I was not clear I meant to say that I like the Panels and the way the zune and media center works to move from one thing to next. But I will like for the fist screen "Home" to have the a view fo what your day looks like. # Missed calls, # of Voicemail, # of emails, # of text, time, date, events, and calendar. That is the way I setup my home screen right now. If I could keep that but then flick up, down, left, right to move form panel to panel that would be great. http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/mobileshell/screenshots.html?en The professional now screen looks like my home screen. When I first turn on my screen I see everything I need to know about my day. It would be nice to start from there and then move to the next panel to look at your media, the next your most used apps, etc. I see the potential of this UI I really do and I like it I'm just worried that the first panel is going to be a clock the next email, the next text, etc.

"we need a UI that has everything we need to know upfront one click away" I don't even want to click to get that info, aside from turning the device on. The pic on the left makes more sense if you figure this is the "Program" screen, and the Today screen loads at power-up, but how is that any different from the current Windows Mobile UI aside from having shiny icons?

I've seen a lot of these fake screen shots for many different concepts. Many times I think the fakes look better than the ones actually implemented. Instead of ignoring these fakes, perhaps all companies should take a closer look at them. IMO.

@maati: "Get out of the iWorld and back to reality, where Microsoft is an innovative company that delivers lots of great technology, lots more than Apple does." You are delusional. Microsoft is the new IBM. They are boring. That is why they, and fanboys like yourself, complain about the press Apple get. That's because Apple is an innovative, interesting and exciting company with products that contain the same qualities. Microsoft on the other hand, is the new big boring IBM of the IT world. Microsoft is an uninspiring company that deliver Xerox products. Copies of others.

@waethorn: ""Seriously, maybe all of you could start a blog together, instead of commenting here." He already did: www.daringfireball.net" Haha! At least DF is a balanced view of things and with true integrity. Even coming from an Apple fun. Unlike the Supersite for Apple. um, I mean for Windows.

@mum: "Not many blogs churn as many postings on Apple out each day as this. That's why there are almost as many Apple trolls as there are MS trolls." That is true. At least 25% of blog posts are anti-Apple or about Apple.
