Xbox Live Prices Going Up, Renew Now to Save

Microsoft announced today that it will be raising the annual fee of Xbox Live Gold starting November 1, going from $49.99 a year to $59.99.

Since launching Xbox LIVE in 2002 we have continually added more content and entertainment experiences for our members, while keeping the price the same. We’re confident that when the new pricing takes effect, an Xbox LIVE Gold membership will continue to offer the best value in the industry.

I'd point out that multiplayer gaming on the PC--and Xbox Live gaming on Windows Phone, for whatever that's worth--is (almost always) free. Just a thought.

But, if you renew before November 1, you can save big: The temporary cost right now is just $39.99.

Take advantage of limited-time savings. Act now to save on Xbox LIVE gold before the price goes up. Upgrade or renew today and save more than 30% off the new price.

12 Month Gold membership starting November 1, 2010: $59.99
Lock in a low one-year price now: $39.99
You save: $20.00

This holiday, Xbox LIVE Gold is adding exciting new features, including streaming sports from ESPN and revolutionary new ways to connect with family and friends with Video Kinect.

wow that Last FM, twitter, and facebook add on must have been expensive! Why do I still get ads on my interface Why do I pay for them to add more transaction based features? Why can't I have my game saves in the cloud? Why do they hide Netflix streaming behind gold? This is garbage

I should add ESPN? Big deal I already get like 9 of them on my cable. Video Kinect? give me a break requires a 150 buck ad one and assumes that everyone has an Xbox 360........... reasons to charge more? something I already have, and something that requires a 150 buck add on to use? NOT

Dumb move, big time. The PS3 lovers of the world love to bag on the cost of Live, now they have more reason to. IMHO they should have dropped the price or made it free. Doing this right before the launch of Windows Phone 7 = Dumb move X2. For gaming, PS3 + PC with Steam = Way better experience.

Urgh. Looks like I'm going to have to buy now then before I get bitten by the price increase. Also, a bit annoyed that I had to exchange my Xbox 360 S after the internal WiFi adapter failed on it. I hope that this is just a random one-off thing that occured and not because the hardware itself still contains some flaws.

"I'd point out that multiplayer gaming on the PC--and Xbox Live gaming on Windows Phone, for whatever that's worth--is (almost always) free" I wanted to point out that multiplayer on PS3 is also still free. "This holiday, Xbox LIVE Gold is adding exciting new features, including....revolutionary new ways to connect with family and friends with Video Kinect." Video chat has always been free with the purchase of the PlayStation Eye, which sells for a third of the price of the Kinect. Plus, PlayStation Home is "free-mium" 3D environment ala Second Life for social networking and game-matching. Just a thought....

Any word on how this might affect the previously announced $99 family pack?

I'm not happy with this decision either. I'm hoping that $99 family pack will help me. I have 4 accounts now, one for me and my 3 sons. I see no benefit whatsoever in what they are claiming.
