Yeah, it does seem a *tad* over the top. I want one, but I realize that it's just a fancy phone.
No one in my clan is even considering it. None. Even my brother who actually has AT&T service, is looking at other options.
I have to original and I love it but my town isn't covered by 3G and so there is absolutely no reason to upgrade. I am not going to pay $10 more a month for slow EDGE powered GPS.
It's really what you want or need. I think of an iPhone as an iPod with a phone, that does a few other things that several other phones already can do. Unfortunately, I do not need an iPod, or even a GPS, so it may not be a phone for me, especially as there are other phones that have better features that I want. Internet 3G in my area appears abundant, but I have internet access at work 100% of the time. So the iPhone may not be for me. Others see an iPod and phone replacement, with internet and other features that fulfills their needs. Hence, everyone's needs are different. But most people's pocket books are the same around now....empty. Buy gas or walk around with a fancy phone. I am surprised at how many will choose the latter.

Anyways, in other news, this new $199 iPhone is basically killing the ability for anyone to sell another phone for more than $149 (at most). Even the Instinct - not AT&T, touchscreen -- is $129.
And it's only going to get worse with the App Store.

Apparently AT&T and your favorite, Verizon, didn't get the memo. I still see plenty of non-smartphone offerings in the $150+ area. Smartphones are still even higher.
And why so much hate??? There is no hate in that statement. Waiting in line so long before the release of a product that will be readily available is the definition of a tool. I wonder when we'll see Scoble and son camped out.

Right, are they selling well? for some reason -- jeez don't know why -- the instinct is priced below the iPhone and it's the closest sprint offering

And, tada, I didn't mention Sprint at all. It's no secret that Sprint is hurting for customers. A much bigger indication is the super cheap pricing plans they offer for unlimited PDA data and unlimited calling, way undercutting AT&T and the Third Rei... excuse me, Verizon. ;) But I'll let subzero fill you in on those details, since he's a Sprint customer.
