Zune Update Appears ... Adds Zune Phone or Windows Mobile Support? (Update #2)

Despite assurances that yesterday's Zune outage was for maintenance purposes only and wouldn't be accompanied by a software update, Microsoft this morning delivered a pretty decent Zune PC software upgrade, bringing the version up to 4.2. I'll need some time to figure out if there's anything new in the user experience, but blogger Long Zheng reports that Microsoft has surreptitiously added support for a device that identifies itself as "Phone." He extrapolates this to mean that the Zune Phone is real.

He could be right. What would make a lot more sense, I think, is that Microsoft would add support for Windows Mobile devices to sync media through the Zune PC software. This could be part of the Windows Mobile 7 family or, I hope, something that is added in time for 6.5.x/6.6 or whatever they're calling the H1 2010 Windows Mobile update.

Good stuff, either way.

Update: Oren K. tells me via email that this update adds a new Podcasts library under Windows 7 ... And sure enough, I see it too. Nice!

It seems that Zune now utilizes the Windows 7 libraries rather than its own internal "monitored folders" list, a nice bit of integration with Microsoft's latest desktop OS. Good stuff, and unexpected.

Update #2: Apparently this update also adds the video format compatibility that I wrote was coming a few weeks back. But it goes beyond the MPEG-2 compatibility I was told about, apparently. According to Erik A. via email, it also adds XViD and DiVX compatibility.

Windows Mobile getting Zune support is huge, hopefully WinMo will get the media player as well. Media Player on Windows Mobile needs to be put out of its misery.

The update requires a system restart after which I noticed a new folder in my Windows 7 Libraries - Podcasts! It's added to the User folder and all subsequent podcasts downloaded through Zune are placed there. All previous podcasts are kept in the Music>Zune folder, but I moved mine to the new location. Hmm, don't know why the distinction is created.

24 hour downtime for each minor update. Yeah, owners of the rumored Zune Phone will go for that.

@roblind My Zune update didn't require a system restart after installation.

Actually, I take that back. I did need to restart after all :)

I did not (seem to) need a restart. I had a partly-listened-to TWiT from last evening. The new version had kept my location within the podcast (which I looked at before doing the update in case it didn't). Nice.

Ah, so it's the old wait-20-minutes-before-announcing-need-to-restart trick. Cute. (Restart wasn't a problem here--I don't leave thousands of things open.)

The restart notice comes via a Windows Update dialogue box rather than from Zune itself. I noticed it in the Notification Area. Any thoughts on why a distinct library folder for Podcasts is created? Granted, they are distinct from music (duh). I am aware that the Zune software is used by a lot of people specifically for finding, listening to, and organizing podcasts. Overall, I am perceiving it as continued investment by Microsoft in the Zune platform, which I'm glad to see.

"gfryesc1: You have poops in your mustache... A green one and a yellow one..." Wow. What a great way to elevate the conversation. What are you, 12 years old?

@lotsamystuff: Yeah you are right... May be you should tell that to gfryesc1, which had begin this silly, 12 years old conversation... You know, the best way to chat with a child is to lower at his level. Pfff... This would be a big drop to you to do that Lotsa... Because you are near the sky, isn't it, God Lotsa?

"Ah, so it's the old wait-20-minutes-before-announcing-need-to-restart trick" That was probably Windows Update requesting that restart, not an application installer.

Ok. Now i'm REALLY excited. Maybe i can switch back to Zune from iTunes. But time will tell... I STILL CAN'T WAIT!

Hopefully support for podcast publishers has improved as well; Zune is really great for the users, which is vital, but has had an incredibly poor experience for me managing a podcast which I publish in the past...an unexcusable oversight, in my biased opinion.

humph. I've tried to get the update several times; it tells me the installation can't continue until I've installed one or more required updates. Windows update (I refreshed several times) tells me there are no available updates, but lists in my history a "failed" Zune 4.2 update today. Error code 643, which doesn't link to any specific help topics. Anybody else have this trouble?

EricoF3 haven't you ever heard the saying Don't argue with an idiot, he'll only bring you down to his level and beat you with experiance, so keep it civil. Also Paul you need to get this comment box fixed so that web browsers FF, IE with IE7 Pro add-on can correct misspelled words, looks cool.

From Long: "Update: Whilst it is possible there might be system-wide Zune integration into Windows Mobile 7, this particular driver references specific hardware IDs that are locked to a vendor (Microsoft) and product which under USB body regulations cannot be masked, thus this has to be Microsoft devices. “Pink” anyone?"

News flash Microsoft is making a Zune phone. They will have an app store. Setting the trends yet again!!! So everyone in their brother, that liked the Zune...all 38 of them, has been asking, bitching, complaining, begging for this since it came out. So after Danger/Sidekick/Pink/ and a massive trend in declining Windows Mobile sales.....Microsoft relents? I am sure Balmer never really meant the iPhone would fail, nope he was joking. Even better, Paul called the Zune a failure just a few pod casts ago and Leo was shocked, or mocked shock then agree with Paul. Dropping the hint of a Zune phone....1 day before the Apple tablet launch...LOL!!!

"Dropping the hint of a Zune phone....1 day before the Apple tablet launch...LOL!!!" Making a State of the Union speech on the day of the Apple tablet launch...LOL. What's wrong with Barack. That said, when a company's product gets more attention than a state of the union speech during an economic crisis, there's something wrong with the media, something terribly wrong.

@rr0de74 - "So everyone in their brother" - I think that you meant everyone AND their brother...but maybe not, if that is what you are into. "I am sure Balmer never really meant the iPhone would fail, nope he was joking." Sort of like Jobs' joke about tablets and eReaders, huh? --tayme

@tayme I am going to bet that Jobs wont spin it as just a tablet, but as some kind of media device doing many things and he will differentiate it against a plain e-reader....backing up his earlier comments. Yes I mean "AND their brother". @shark Microsoft release what looks to be more than a minor update to its portable media device, the day before Apple launches its next portable media device. I am sure it was un-planed. As far as the news, covering the wrong stuff most of the time. Just go to www.foxnews.com and scroll down to the bottom half of the page....its like tmz.com and foxnews.com were merged. I gave up long ago on any mainstream news outlets that are motivated only by money.

@rrode74 - "some kind of media device doing many things" - Like a big honkin' iPod. "differentiate it against a plain e-reader" - with eye straining, moving color charts and graphs. But really, I hope that it is something great...I really do. I like Apple...even though the CEO is egotistical and a good portion of the fans would gladly buy a turd if it had the Apple logo on it and an i in front of the name! --tayme

@james3mg: Are you running Windows 7 RC? I had the same issue. You need to run setup.exe in Vista compatibility mode.
