Microsoft Posts Short Surface Videos

Taking a cue from Apple, Microsoft has posted a couple of short but interesting videos explaining its new Surface tablets devices.

The first, The making of Microsoft Surface, tells the story about how Microsoft created the devices.

The second, Learn more about Surface, is your basic overview.

Not a lot of meat in either one, which isn’t surprising given their lengths. Just enough to chew on. :)

Yup, see the thing is, MS makes it very easy for haters.. they cant help because MS keep putting their feet in their mouths. Take for example, the current airing Surface commercial. A bunch of people dancing and clicking the touch cover. BIG WHOOP. I mean its a cool commercial, but how about backing it up with a series of commercials that actuall show some meat.. HOW IS SURFACE (or Win8) DIFFERENT? HOW IS SURFACE (or Win8) BETTER? HOW WILL SURFACE (or Win8) CHANGE MY LIFE? WHY SHOULD I GET A SURFACE (or Win8) ABOVE ALL OTHER DEVICES? Simple questions... I know they show it to those who pay attention to blogs, youtube short vids, etc.. but what about mainstream TV.. the general public? Add in the fact.. they have yet to show the general public whats the difference between WinRT and Win8.. Come on MS, help us help yourselves.. and you wonder why you have it hard in the market? You make it hard on yourselves!

I'm stuck on whether or not to go with a Surface with a keyboard cover, or a ThinkPad Tablet 2. Through Lenovo's reseller plans, I can get a Tablet 2 for 50% off as a demo/in-house unit, making it about the same as the retail price of the Surface (Surface isn't available through distribution, and I certainly can't get a 50%-off discount from Microsoft). Surface pro's: - snap-on keyboard cover (ThinkPad has no keyboard cover option at all) - that slick magnesium case with built-in stand - NVIDIA quad-core + "GeForce ULV" GPU cores vs. Atom dual-core + PowerVR gfx (I don't know how either of these chips perform, but my money is on the NVIDIA chip...the gfx in the Atom SoC is the same as some of the other ARM Cortex A9 chips, and I've seen the GMA 500, which is also PowerVR based, and it's absolute crap) Tablet 2 pro's: - pressure-sensitive active digitizer, and includes stylus with eraser button (awesome for drawing apps) - backwards compatibility (I could use Paint Shop Pro - my fave photo-editing app - on it right away) - I can sell these as a reseller NOW, so it makes a good advertisement for the wares that I carry...Surface isn't available to channel disty's until next year ThinkPad Tablet 2 will also connect to a domain, but I won't be using it for that. Decisions, decisions....

Ah ads that talk to you. MS should do more of this, that singing and dancing one kinda missed the point by a mile or two. I expect this is just the first of the many ads, but I prefer these to the musical numbers.

Well, Windows 8 isn't even out yet and the haters are at it already. It's almost like the press is TRYING to kill off MS before they have had a chance to prove the OS: http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/technolog/early-look-windows-8-baffles... I agree with some of what was said, I'm still debating as to whether or not to put it on my main PC (mainly used for gaming and video applications), but will probably get there eventually. It would be nice to know if my legacy software (ie. Pinnacle Studios, Handbrake and Lord of the Rings Online) will still work on the new desktop, but nobody's saying much about it, or at least not clearly. It looks to me like MS is trying to mimic Apple, and in doing so, is alienating some fo their biggest supporters. If they had more clearly answered some of my questions, I may have already installed it on my desktop PC because I wouldn't then be playing the guessing game.
