Is the iPod Nano So Ugly Because Apple Agreed Not to Copy Windows Phone?

Even Apple’s most fanatical followers are sheepishly admitting that the UI of the firm’s latest iPod nano is laughably terrible, with bizarre, round icons that bear no resemblance at all to Apple’s normally beautiful products. But I have a (humorous) theory about why the iPod nano is so horrible. It’s because Apple promised not to copy Microsoft’s products.

More specifically, by not copying the design of Windows Phone, which feature large, finger-friendly (and more expressive) live tiles, Apple has instead been forced to compromise on the design of the iPod nano.

I know, I know. You’re thinking that Microsoft agreed to not copy Apple, not the other way around. And you’re thinking that because that’s how the mainstream media reported this situation. But that premise is wrong. As part of a cross-licensing of mobile patents, both companies agreed not to copy each other. So Apple agreed not to copy Microsoft too. They agreed not to copy Microsoft’s mobile products.

Apple agreed not to copy Windows Phone.

The thing is, if Apple had used square icons, it could have resulted in something that looked just like Windows Phone, but without the benefits of the Windows Phone UI’s tiles, which include live updates and dynamic information.

So consumers will get this misguided piece of junk:

nano-awful

Instead of a device that looks like this:

nano-ripoff

And admit it, even with static “tiles,” that latter design does look better. Still ugly, but better.

Just a (humorous) thought. :)

I can't believe how much it looks like the Lumia 800 (from a distance and with a squint).

More anti Apple pro Microsoft nonsense from Paul. This time he concocts some crazy conspiracy theory about why Apple uses rounded icons which of course has to involve MS. Apple probably used something slightly different from iOS style icons to differentiate the product so customers would not think they are getting the iOS versions of these ipod apps. These icons look like typical Apple icons, but not like the iOS ones. It says Apple, but not iOS, which is the point. I'm sorry but the 3D glass rendered buttons that Apple uses look MUCH better than flat mono colored squares. In addition, your squares cover most of the entire background which is supposed to match the outer color of the ipod itself.

To me the hardware itself does rather remind me of the Nokia Lumias, only with a big ugly white panel on the front.

What I don't get is that the music player market is STILL being conceded to Apple. I mean once MS Music comes out; and with the ability to stream music these days, why ON EARTH is there not a tiny version of Win8 and a companion "shoulder mounted" music player, WITH live tiles and all from Nokia, that sits on a little fatboy in the kitchen? What about that little square device we have seen on blog posts that still has not made an appearance? PS, I cannot log in to this site, and many others using IE 10. Isn't that a little much for an Win Super Site to be missing? What is that all about? Maybe it's just my browser, but I can't do Disqus either. I had to go to Firefox just to make this comment. FYI.

The thing is, they should have signed an agreement with Nokia not to copy their designs too!

We bought several of these in the previous decade. Today, I think most grown ups want a Smart Phone, and most Kids want the iPod Touch. This device needs to go....

In related news I read that BMW went with a more rounded sleek look for the new X6 since a license agreement with Nissan prevented them from using the Nissan Cube as a body design

I actually think the round icons look better. The most likely reason is so that the iPod Nano and the iPod Touch aren't seen as similar products. I want to like this but the fact that it won't work out of the box with any of my numerous iPod speakers and doesn't give me an upgrade in memory over my prior Nano is just a deal breaker for me.

Paul is right! If you cut and paste the Windows Phone UI onto the iPod the UI looks like the Windows Phone UI. Holy shit! What an astounding discovery! I guess anything to not talk about how Apple sold more iPhone 5s in a day than Nokia sells Lumias

Is it just me, or does it look like a bad copy of the Nokia Lumia shell?

Well I am going to buy one. Firstly, I do not think it is ugly-in fact rather like it. Secondly, the round icons are fine and differentiate it from a phone or touch. But thirdly, the reason I am going to buy it is not for that stuff and not even for the music, but rather for the radio--I hope it is good. The pause feature is great and I will probably get a lot of flak saying that so and so already has that. Well I do not know so and so. I would love to be able to listen to NPR and when get interupted simply pause it and pick up later. Same with audible books which of course can do. But the main reason is that it should be able to simply hook to my speaker next to my TV and sync local radio broadcasts to action on the screen and not have to listen to all those incompetent TV announcers. Nokia are you listening. I will of course have a red one and engrave it with my NCSU Wolfpack logo on the back of it. Apple should simply license NCAA colleges and have this as an option. (Or Nokia could with an exclusive license like that).

Ugh. This looks like those 30 dollar MP3 players you can buy at Rite Aid. Miss the Zune HD yet?

@Florian, Actually you can argue that the Nokia shell is a copy of the ipod nano from year back. This is just Apple returning to a similar design they already did.

A couple of things off the top of my head. 1. Windows has no "fanboys" comparable to what's on the Apple side. None. 2. Insufferable? For what? Hitting a little too close to home? 3. Not that you're unsophisticated, but you are perhaps numbed into not realizing why square tiles are in fact "better" than round icons, so let me explain. They're not icons. They're live tiles that can offer expressive information, not just a single number in a circle. I know, I know. Simplicity above all else. Yawn. 5. I was having fun with this. I find it odd that anyone could not get that. In short, I'll let you know when I need someone to show up here and dumb down the conversation. This was all in good fun, nothing more.

Um, sure, square icons look so much better than circular icons. ((rolls eyes)) Good to know that windows has insufferable fanboys as well as apple.
