No Word Yet on Windows Phone 7.8

I’ve received a lot of emails about Windows Phone 7.8 this week, after assuming that we’d hear about this release by the time Windows Phone 8 shipped. But Microsoft told me at BUILD today that it has no comment about the release, beyond what it disclosed back in June.

As I wrote in Windows Phone 7.8 Preview, Windows Phone 7.8 is the final major update to the now-obsolete Windows Phone 7.x line and will be made available to all existing devices. It adds the Start screen features from Windows Phone 8, including the new layout and tile sizing options.

Windows Phone 7.8 was a surprise announcement at the June Windows Phone Summit event where Microsoft first revealed Windows Phone 8. It’s designed to appease upset early adopters who cannot upgrade their phones to the new version of the OS.

But Windows Phone fans want more than just the Start screen features, and there have been persistent rumors—which Microsoft has denied—that the release would include other Windows Phone 8 features. Nokia has said that it will continue to update its own Windows Phone customers with new apps that still run on Windows Phone 7.x, many of which have since been released.

So what’s next? Right now, it’s just a waiting game: Microsoft still intends to deliver Windows Phone 7.8. It’s just being cagey about the timing.

They may drop that news at 6pm on a Friday. That'd be "a taking out the trash" announcment.

It seems misleading to refer to the Windows Phone 7.x line as obsolete. I know that it has been superseded by Windows Phone 8 but the Windows Phone 7.x phones still work fine. Calling them obsolete makes it sound like they aren't useful anymore (like a floppy disk) which is a little draconian today (i.e., given that the new phones haven't even been released yet).

One other thing I have been wondering is since WP7 is now "obsolete" does this mean we will not see any new Xbox Live games on our phones? Is the Marketplace App Store going to completely die? If so, who cares about 7.8. I'll just save my money and upgrade to WP8 sometime next year.

I am looking forward to the upgrade to my Lumia. Even after just about a year of having one I am still impressed, and impressing my iphone/android owning collegues in the next office. Maybe its because of where I am in my upgrade path, - next November - but I am not bothered by the prospect of my Lumia becoming 'obsolete' 'Redundant' is probably a scarier term but its definetly not that. My Nokia 5800, now that is redundant. I went from a Symbian system to WP7.5 in the last year, completely changing OS and to an immature one at that. Going from WP7.5 or even WP7.8 to WP8 with full access to all my 7.5 apps is hardly a scary prospect. In fact I am looking forward to it.

Sucks that we still haven't heard diddly squat about this yet!
