No Surprise, But New Windows 8 Build Offers More Color Choices

When I met with Microsoft before the release of the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, I was told that the company originally intended to use a different Start screen color scheme for each milestone. (The Developer Preview was green, for "go".) Surprised by the negative comments about the single color scheme in the Developer Preview, however, Microsoft decided to allow several color schemes in the Consumer Preview. But the plan has always been for the final version to support many, many color schemes.

The availability of these new colors is apparently the theme, if you will, of a new post on the Chinese web site Win8China, which has been leaking Windows 8 goodness for months. Not a big deal, and not unexpected, but apparently the first leaked post-Consumer Preview build does include new colors.

This is unacceptable to us loyal Consumer Preview users. I hope someone releases a patch that lets us revert this terrible change.

They seem to have taken the black one out? Surprised they don't let you pick the nice gradient backdrops like those used on the Store and Xbox screens, that looks a lot nicer than the horrible MS Paint patterns we get to choose from.

Why doesn't Microsoft just show us the 24-bit color wheel? Why limit the color choices?

I hope that the final release offers even more choices including 1) black, 2) white, 3) pleasant gradients for a less flat look, 4) the ability to use a picture, just like the desktop wallpaper. Hey, even if you want to make your start screen look gaudy, shouldn't that be up to you? This is Windows, and we've always had that freedom. I would even suggest Microsoft offer backdrop themes similar to those for XBOX 360 and allow third parties to create more themes. I have an awesome Gears of War theme, and I can totally see it behind the start screen tiles. People like choices. It seems like the tiles would be easy to see and discern no matter what the background--they're not transparent or anything like that.
