Upgrade from Windows 8 Enterprise Eval? Nope

After publishing my series of Windows 8 upgrade tips, a few readers contacted me about the Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation (Eval) version. Does this eval version of Windows 8 support any kind of upgrade, even a partial migration?

The answer, as it turns out, is no. And to be fair, Microsoft said as much when it announced the Windows 8 Enterprise eval back in August.

“You won’t be able to ‘upgrade’ this evaluation version to a non-eval version at a later date, I noted in Get Windows 8 Now. “Because it’s Enterprise edition, you will see some features that you will not be able to access in the future when you install a mainstream, retail version of Windows 8 Core or Pro. And you must register when you install the software and sign in with a Microsoft account.”

Still, the screen you get during Setup is somewhat priceless.

Nothing for you!!

UPDATE: Someone asked whether this type of “upgrade” would still create the windows.old folder structure from which you could retrieve documents and other files from the previous install. The answer is yes. That said, I strongly recommend backing up everything before performing this kind of operation, just in case.

Paul, corporate clients can actually migrate user files and settings via USMT. If they're using MDT or System Center Configuration Manager tools, they can automate the process, and they probably should be using some kind of automation tool already since this is the audience that Windows 8 Enterprise targets. Also, the login page on your site doesn't work in IE10 standards mode (desktop IE10). The button to submit logon credentials doesn't function. Compatibility Mode works though.

You did stress that this would be the case and I knew that going in. I have my Desktop and HP TouchSmart both running the Enterprise Evaluation and it's really cool. Granted I'll have to burn it off and install Pro later but for now I'll enjoy using the Xbox Glass and other touch features on the TouchSmart. Some of my clients have come to me with some issues on the Vista or Seven machines and I'd mention 8 to them and they'd be intrigued. I'd whip out my laptop and show them the new Metro (damn it I'm calling it Metro) interface and explaining the concept of the single UI to them. They REALLY like it. These are older folks, by the way, and they understand that after 90 days they'll have to buy Windows 8 and would have to come back to me to transfer all their documents and such over to their new 8. Even so these people LOVE it!
