Windows 8 RC to Get Flatter Explorer UI, Other Changes

If a report from Chinese tech blog win8china.com is to be believed--and they've been pretty accurate so far--the Release Candidate (RC) version of Windows 8 will feature a tweaked Explorer user interface that somewhat matches the flat UI that pervades the Metro interface.

Here are some before and after shots that will drive home the expected change:

Before (Beta/Consumer Preview):

After (RC):

This change is a lot less dramatic than the forum fantasies that have been endlessly popularized by other blogs, but then that makes sense. Unlike the kids who draw such pictures in a vacuum, Microsoft has over a billion users to support. And if Explorer was too different from the version in Windows 7, corporations would avoid this release in droves because of the training costs involved.

This flatter new Explorer is just the beginning, folks. We've learned separately that other UI changes are coming to the RC build, including new icons, new cursors, new controls, and more. Looks like Rafael and I will be retaking all of the screenshots for Windows 8 Secrets ... as expected.

Indeed. As expected. The UI changes always happen last for existing stuff in windows. And it makes sense. More of a surprise factor, more of a final fit-and-finish wow-effect, etc.. It was quite expectable to get a more fitting metro-style theme for desktop. nice to know it's (maybe) true. else, i would just download one that fits to "unify" the two environments a bit. But the more important thing here is: If they're at that stage, they really are in their final stages currently. Have fun remaking all your printscreens. Surely annoying, such changes, for you. davepermen

The Consumer Preview is pretty solid, a few driver related issues are there. The mail app is broken, seems it works fine for a few days then I can only see one account and cannot access the other two regardless of what I do. I haven't tried live essentials on the desktop yet, I know it didn't work on the Developer Preview but hopefully it will be available.

No surprises there, and as you say, it will help the desktop environment blend in more with the Metro environment -- which will be good. It won't be such a slap in the face going back and forth. Hopefully those new icons and other tweaks will be everywhere, and not half-assed like they did in Windows Vista.

Guess it must be my old eyes going out on me, but I just don't see any significant differences in the two screen shots above (other than the shadowing of the outlines). Maybe it would have helped had they not switched tabs in the ribbon.

I wish they'd change all the icons and toolbar buttons next.

Indeed they feel they have to save some pizazz for Windows 9 to look good. :/
