In New Ads, Nokia Mocks iPhone

Nokia has launched a fun new web site called Smart Phone Beta Test that includes three humorous ads--Death Grip, Outside, and Fragile--that mock key issues with the iPhone. The point of the campaign is painfully obvious: Maybe if Apple actually tested their products extensively before shipping them to the public, there wouldn't be so many problems.

Here they are.

Death Grip

"You're holding it wrong. That is user error. Stop acting like a spoiled child and use the approved grip."

Outside

"The screen really washes out in the sun." "So don't go outside." "See, we have a workaround." "It's smart."

Fragile

"Aw... poor baby. You know who's fragile? You are."

Two of those videos are labeled 2007, remind me what was Nokia doing in 2007? Should they really be making people wonder what they have been doing for the last 5 years?

2010 called....it wants its iPhone death grip jokes back. Really...if this is the best Nokia can do to try and sell WP7, the platform is doomed. They are comparing their product to one that is over almost 2 years old now.

While the ads are humorous, I don't think they will really be that effective. The reason the Mac vs PC ads worked so well was that there was an alternative product offered. These ads have one guy pointing out 'deficiencies' and the rest of the ad his two colleagues berate him. These deficiencies really are non starters at that I don't think it will really hit home with consumers and send the message that Nokia and Microsoft have something better. And honestly, I don't think they do have something better. This, as with all the their 'advertising' schemes Microsoft and Nokia have dreamt up, will fail. The offering just isn't that compelling.

Remember when Microsoft could be late to the party and use FUD to catch up and eventually lead? Now we just listen to grandpa repeat the same old stories from the past, laugh with him about the good old days and then put him to bed.

Paul, I purchased my first Windows Phone handset yesterday; a Nokia Lumina 800. The fully charged battery lasted 12 hours before dying and I was asleep for 7 of those hours, had a German lesson for another 2 and had a work colleague at my house for another 1. Second observation, pertinent to your post, I had zero data coverage on the underground tram to work, where my iPhone had coverage for all but a small segment of the journey. My disappointment in Nokia's premium (not for much longer) handset was offset by the brilliance of the operating system. With less than a day of WP7 user experience under my belt, I'm not going to 'smoke' anyone, at anything, but the integration of information and the natural flow forward, AND, BACK is outstanding; way ahead of IOS. The software shows promise that is leagues ahead of the chain of iPhones I've lived with for 3-4 year. While I am really impressed by Microsofts operating system, I feel the hardware is crippled. A 16GB ceiling meant I had to choose which music I loaded on the device and to forgo all photos (although SkyDrive and Facebook photo integration is brilliant). The screen on the Lumina 800 is beautiful despite the mediocre resolution. Battery life sucksperiod! I Skype my kids, so yes, I miss the front facing camera. I like snappy and single core is not dual core. The poor reception on the Lumina is disappointing, so disappointing that I wonder why Nokia is making fun of Antennagate. Overall, the Lumina 800 handset is not great, despite some excellent features. It is a fair way behind the latest iPhone handset (Im not in a position to comment on Android handsets). I eagerly await WP8 and the new breed of handsets that will follow. There is so much potential and I am genuinely excited.

Hang on a minute all you grumbly peoople! The amount of crap we people who like Microsoft put up from Apple fanboys, like viruses. no we dont get them, blue screens, not since 2004 mate. Also they keep referring to 1984 for gawds sake, again and again and again! The PC v Mac ads were downright lies, no really they were. The british ones sunk without trace as we like the underdog, Apple really didnt get that and this was from the actor/comedian who played the 'Mac'. As for 2007, even though they were using Symbian I am sure Nokia were still outselling everything else. In that context Nokia who is a major player in the mobile market has every right to poke fun at the competition. If anybody knows how to make a gorgeous phone that works, they do! Iphones phones are no longer cool, and look so dated.

These are terrible, terrible, terrible. They need to be selling phones, not engaging in futile iPhone bashing that will take exactly zero sales away. And as yoshipod and tagy said, the issues are from 2010 and 2007.

I have to question the thinking behind the decision to undermine confidence in the iPhone hardware. Apple is number two in smartphone sales with an almost cult-like following and a well-managed platform that actually does what (and how) most consumers think it should. They should be taking the fight to the gazillion different Android handsets and showing consumers the pain of buying in to that platform. The fact is that no one is going to be able to move many WP7s based on its own merits, it's just too hip to hate Microsoft and to cry that Metro is dumb.

It´s the only thing that Nokia actually can do. How about selling better phones???? I think is time to realize that Microsoft & Nokia is a bad joke, they are too late for the game. They only attract people who wants to get into a page to see if the update is ready for launch.

I love watching the pro-Apple partisan stuff come to the rise. Anyone who finds these ads poor or silly is simply under the haze of control of Apple. They're funny. Sorry. And, as it turns out, accurate. Which is why they're effective, obviously.

Better phones? LOL. Have you seen a Lumia 800 or 900? There are no better phones.

"Anyone who finds these ads poor or silly is simply under the haze of control of Apple. They're funny. Sorry. And, as it turns out, accurate. Which is why they're effective, obviousl" Lets recap... When Apple makes fun of Windows in the I'm a mac/I'm a PC, Paul is offended, claims they are not true, does not find them funny and calls them insulting to Windows users. But when Samsung or Nokia, or any other company has ads that mock Apple, well then those are funny, always true, and anyone who does not think so must be brainwashed by Apple. The hypocrisy is strong in this one.

Well, it seems either you guys (the commenters!) didn't actually watch the videos or you guys really need to have your sense of humor checked. Also, you probably should know that there's a lot of world outside the US. While Nokia hasn't had much success in the US, it has had a lot outside, so much so that if, two, three years ago, you went to pretty much any european country you would see way more 5800 ExpressMusic phones than iPhones. It was only recently that Samsung (and not Apple) took the 1st place from Nokia.

@yoshipod That's because, in part, those Apple ads were completely bogus. These ads actually have some merit to the claims made in them.

@Ian Can you explain why the Apple ads were completely bogus while these are legit? I don't think that the iPhone 4S has any death grip issues, nor did the 3GS or 3G. I also seem to recall an iPhone 4 that fell during a skydive and still worked. I know many people who have dropped there iPhones and did not even get a scratch. So does that make these ads completely bogus? I'm not saying the I'm a Mac ads were 100% truthful in every single possible way for every single windows user, but they are really no worse than these.

Head on over to www.anandtech.com and read the Lumina 900 review. It's a pretty good assessment...unfortunately it doesn't win any best-in-class awards. Now I know why it's only $99.

@yoshipod In the same way, Mac fanboys accuse Windows of crashing, blue screens, viruses, and an overall awful experience. Er.. no. Welcome to the world of Apple bashing, looks very similar to Microsoft bashing. There is a lot of deceit out there, but if someone is going to accuse a company and products falsely then expect a backlash. I am delighted with my Nokia 800. And as far as I know, not one has blown up in an aircraft.. unlike certain glass phones.
