Rumor: Other Carriers Can Sell Nokia Lumia 900 by Mid-2012

With the understanding that this is a single-source rumor whose validity I can't corroborate, I'd like to present some Windows Phone information that I know will be of interest to enthusiasts: While Microsoft, Nokia, and AT&T have all stressed that the Nokia Lumia 900 is "exclusive" to AT&T, none have stated whether this exclusivity is temporary or permanent. But according to my source, it is indeed temporary. And other carriers will be able to sell the device 45 days after AT&T's launch date of March 18.

Again, this is not a "fact." This information comes from a source at a rival wireless carrier and not from the Microsoft marketing documentation I've referenced repeatedly. I have not confirmed this with other sources.

According to this source, AT&T has a 45-day exclusive hold on the Lumia 900. After that time, other carriers can negotiate with Nokia for a version of the handset that will work on their networks. The source speculates that T-Mobile (and probably Verizon, possibly Sprint) will be getting some version of the 900 after it's been released on AT&T, most likely in the third quarter of 2012.

These improved versions of the 900 will allegedly include an improved, 12 megapixel camera, the source revealed.

Why bother with such a rumor? I've received a lot of questions about whether other carriers in the US and elsewhere will be selling the Lumia 900. So far, Microsoft, Nokia, and AT&T have only stated that the device is exclusive to AT&T. So this information is, of course, interesting, assuming it's true. Take it with the necessary grain of salt. But that's what I've heard.

AT&T competitors (namely Verizon) spread this kind of rumor all the time whenever it looks like they will lose some customers. They did it when iphone was exclusive to AT&T and also again about a year ago with WP7 - they kept leaking rumors of imminent release of WP7 devices on their network to prevent their customers from switching to AT&T. It turned out Verizon got their WP7 device much later than the rumor suggested and the device was arguably a little less desirable than the ones available on AT&T. What people should go by is the words from executives' mouth. Sprint and Verizon executives have been bad mouthing WP7 repeatedly, trying to make people think it's "not innovative" or "bad user experience" (LOL). The only reason they do that is because WP7 has been and will likely be semi-exclusive to AT&T at least for near term. They can't afford to let people think WP7 is great because, if they do, they will lose customers to AT&T.

T-mobile is advertising the Lumia 710 as being "the first 4G Windows Phone".

I dream of the day when cellular providers are like home phone and internet providers; dumb pipes that provide a service that is device agnostic. Carrier exclusivity of devices is terrible for the consumer.

There will be lots of unhappy campers on AT&T if they release an "improved" version on other carriers after 45 days. Note: that is 15 days past the return window.

@Yogi76: Spot on comment! I am extremely frustrated with the "relationship" between MS and VZW in regard to the latest WP7 devices. Give me the phone I want on the network I want, without all the BS of exlusivity! However temporary that may be, in the case of this 'rumor'. Here is to hoping this rumor is true!
