Zune Web Site Goes Dark, Microsoft Answers Some Xbox Music Questions

zune-no-more

Visitors to the Zune web site are in for a surprise: It’s gone. Instead, you’re transferred to a partner support page on Xbox.com that explains the transition from Zune Music to Xbox Music.

“Zune Music is now Xbox Music!” the site notes. “Get your Zune favorites: Support, Music Pass, Software, and your Account through Xbox.com … the Zune.net web site has been turned off and content has been moved to Xbox.com.”

Some services from the old Zune site are quite MIA however. The web playback interface is gone, for example, though Microsoft says it will be coming back in the future. (You can still access Zune Marketplace from your PC (using the Zune PC software), Windows Phone, or Xbox 360.)

A Q&A answers some of the lingering questions about this transition, including:

Zune Music Pass. Renamed to Xbox Music Pass, this will still work with the Zune PC Software on Windows 7 or Windows 8. “Current Zune Music Pass customers will automatically become Xbox Music Pass customers and will have access to everything they love about Zune and more.”

Zune Music Pass grandfathered “keep 10” accounts. The site says “10 songs keepers aren’t supported by the Xbox Music app on Windows 8.” I take this to mean that you will not be able to download the 10 free songs per month using the Windows 8 Xbox Music app. Instead, you can continue doing so via the Zune PC software. Fair enough.

Windows 7 and Windows Phone 7 users. An Xbox Music Pass will work on Windows 7 PC's and Windows Phone 7.

Zune and Xbox 360. Your Xbox 360 will automatically update the music app from Zune to Xbox Music over the next few weeks. When it does, the Zune branding will disappear, replaced with Xbox Music and Xbox Video branding.

I’ve submitted several other questions to Xbox about Xbox Music and hope to hear back soon.

The Zune Canada website redirects here: http://www.xbox.com/en-CA/live/zune "Uh oh....that shouldn't have happened. It appears you found a glitch in the system."

According to Microsoft, you can associate four devices with an Xbox Music Pass now: http://support.xbox.com/en-US/music-and-video/music/use-music-pass But... I think "devices" means PCs, Zune devices, and/or Windows Phone handsets. Also, note this little bit: "Xbox Music Pass is designed for a single user. If other members of your household have Windows Phones, their own Microsoft accounts would be associated with their phones and, therefore, they would need their own Xbox Music Passes." No family account.

Yes. Go to zune.net, you will get transferred to live.xbox.com to log in, and manage your account from one of the tiles on the website, and remove the device, or do it under Settings > Account on the Zune Software. You can only remove one device per month, or at least that's how it was with Zune. Not sure with Xbox Music.

Yeah, they really need to allow more devices. I have a Surface coming, we plan on going Windows Phone 8 (2 Phones), 3 Zune HD's, we have a laptop, desktop and my work PC, all currently with Zune Pass. I know we are limited with devices at least for downloading actual music. I hope they increase it.

Paul I noticed something with my devices. Currently my authorized devices are my old Zune 120, Zune HD and HTC Surround, and three is the limit. My recently acquired and unlocked Lumia 900 would not let me download music, only stream. However, since about 3 days ago all of a sudden I have been able to download music on the Lumia 900 as well. Are they allowing more devices as part of Xbox Music?

This is really screwed up on the part of Microsoft. If you download a track from Zune Pass using the Zune desktop client, it won't play in the Modern UI Music app in Windows 8, and if you download a track using the Modern Music app in Windows 8, it won't play in the desktop Zune client. But both tracks will play in Windows 8's version of Media Player 12. Unfortunately Windows RT does not include Windows Media Player 12, or the Zune desktop client. I hope they get this sorted out by the time Windows RT goes live next week

I dont know if its just my stuff.. but my Xbox Music cant play my ZunePass content and vice versa.. complains about DRM. This is on the same W8 machine that I run Zune and Xbox Music from. Very irritating. I know Zune software is probably going away, and I should be running it on W8, but still. The same problem occurs when I try to play the same tracks with Windows Media Player. So somewhere somewhere the DRM for all these services are messing with me. Something to be aware of...

Is there a way to un-associate a device so you can get it working on a new device?

Still a little confused where I stand with my Zune 120. I love using it because I have pretty much my whole collection (the good part) on it as well as my zune pass content. I know they have to move on but it can't be that hard to build a bridge back to simply load music to my player. Since the phone I want will not allow me to add memory, I am beginning to be a little disapoointed.

So basically Microsoft just shunned the entire podcast community. What fool do we blame for this stupidity? I grant you that podcasts are still discoverable through Windows Phone's Marketplace search as well as the Zune desktop software, but to not have any web listing of podcasts seems like a terrible oversight. I just can't believe that they haven't made it simple to listen to podcasts on XBOX, either. That kind of content is perfect for the living room.
